Emma Watson has been named the “most dangerous” celebrity to search for online by internet security firm MCAfee. The American company said that Watson had become cyber criminal’s favourite celebrity to use as bait when attempting to lure users to malicious sites, reports the UK’s Daily Telegraph.
Many sites have begun using the 22-year-old Harry Potter actress to trick users into downloading malicious software. Should you search for Emma Watson, there is apparently a one-in-eight chance of landing on a dangerous website. Mcafee say that searching for the actress with “free downloads” as part of the search term has resulted in the highest number of risky sites for 2012. It’s the sixth time that the security giant has conducted the study, which was topped last year by model Heidi Klum. Unsurprisingly, female celebrities made up 19 of the top 20 places on the list, with popular host Jimmy Kimmel the only male to make the cut. Mcafee’s director of web security research Paula Greve said, “In today’s celebrity culture, consumers expect to be able to go online to catch up with the latest photos, videos, tweets, and stories about their favourite celebrities…Due to the richness of the data and the high interaction, often times consumers forget the risks that they are taking by clicking on the links.”
Other celebrities among those deemed to be the ‘riskiest’ searches are Jessica Biel, Eva Mendes, Halle Berry and SELENA GOMEZ.
