'Birdman' Becomes The Front-Runner In Oscar Race

Michael Keaton Emma Stone

Last weekend's two guild awards threw a whammy into the awards season that no one quite saw coming. While the favourite actors picked up Screen Actors' Guild prizes for their acclaimed performances - Eddie Redmayne in 'The Theory of Everything', Julianne Moore in 'Still Alice', J.K. Simmons in 'Whiplash' and Patricia Arquette in 'Boyhood' - it was the Best Ensemble prize that caused everyone to gasp: it went to 'Birdman'.

The night before, at the Producers Guild of America awards, 'Birdman' had also won the night's top prize. Until now, 'Birdman' has only been seen as one of many to be gunning for the top spot. Now, things have changed: it's the front-runner; the film to beat on Oscar night.

Emma Stone Extends Cabaret Run By Two Weeks

Emma Stone Alan Cumming

Good news, musical theatre nerds! If you missed Emma Stone’s original run as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, her stay at the Roundabout Theater Company has been extended with two more weeks. Her final performance will be on February 19th.  Tickets for the final weeks of performances are now on sale at the Roundabout Theater’s website.

Emma Stone
Thanks to Emma Stone's success in Cabaret, The Roundabout Theater has extended her stay.

It’s no surprise that Stone is staying on in her role as the iconic Fraulein Sally Bowles, for which she’s received rave reviews since replacing Michelle Williams back in November. Stone’s name was originally attached to the production while it was in development, but she had to bow out due to scheduling conflicts. This is Stone’s Broadway debut, but we might be seeing more of her onstage this year, as well as her roles in upcoming projects by Woody Allen and Cameron Crowe.

Birdman Review

Excellent

Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu continues to reject traditional narrative structures with this whizzy, ambitious exploration of celebrity, art and commerce. And the clever casting of Michael Keaton adds another layer of meaning to the whole film, which is shot as one long wildly entertaining single take and pointedly subtitled "The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance". Blackly hilarious and darkly emotional, this is an exploration of how show business can push a person to the brink of madness. And maybe knock them over the edge.

Keaton stars as Riggan, once a top movie star known for his three Birdman blockbusters. But he hasn't done anything notable since, and is now trying to reboot his career by directing, adapting and starring in a Broadway play based on a Raymond Chandler story. The problem is that no one will let him escape from the iconic superhero character he's best known for, least of all Birdman himself, who mentally haunts and taunts Riggan at every turn. Meanwhile in the theatre, Riggan locks horns with costar Mike (Edward Nortan), a controlling show-off brought in at the request of lead actress Lesley (Naomi Watts). As opening night approaches, Riggan and his producer-friend Jake (Zach Galifianakis) are also struggling with the demands of high-maintenance costar Laura (Andrea Riseborough), plus distractions from Riggan's daughter-assistant (Emma Stone) and ex-wife (Amy Ryan).

Inarritu and ace cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki tell this story as if it's one continuous snaky shot with the camera following Riggan through the maze-like backstage corridors, into the theatre and out into nearby Times Square streets. The virtuoso filmmaking is simply breathtaking, and it works perfectly because all of the characters are packed with pungent details and fully developed inner lives. The actors find all kinds of quirks that are both hilarious and darkly thoughtful, creating jagged interaction as they cross paths with each other, sparring riotously for attention. Every scene bristles with startling revelations and barbed jabs at the Hollywood system.

Magic In The Moonlight Review

Very Good

After the high of last year's Blue Jasmine, Woody Allen is back in playful mode for this rather goofy comedy, which only works for audience members willing to abandon their cynicism and just go with the flow. A solid cast makes the most of Allen's cleverly barbed dialogue, even if the performances and filmmaking sometimes feel a bit slapdash. And Allen's deeper existential themes add a hint of depth to the silliness.

It opens in 1928 Berlin, as the magician Stanley (Colin Firth) is convinced by his friend Howard (Simon McBurney) to travel to the South of France to debunk a young American mystic named Sophie (Emma Stone), who has a wealthy family in her thrall. Not only has Sophie convinced the matriarch (Jacki Weaver) that she can communicate with her dead husband, but she has also attracted the puppy-dog devotion of Brice (Hamish Linklater), the sweetly dim heir to the family fortune. But no matter how hard Stanley tries, he can't prove that Sophie is a fraud, and accepting her supernatural powers completely upends his relentlessly pessimistic view of humanity. Although it's even trickier to convince himself that he might be falling for Sophie.

Allen sets all of this up in a very simple way, prodding Firth to a hilariously ridiculous performance as a repressed Englishman for whom life has to be completely rational. Facing him off against Stone's young, free-flowing American is a bit obvious, but the script makes sure that their barbed banter overflows with witty repartee. This includes astute commentary on Allen's favourite theme: exploring the meaning of life through the contradictory blending of science, religion and human emotion. So even if the performances are rather oddly matched, Firth and Stone find some superb chemistry along the way. Although the snappiest role belongs to Eileen Atkins, as Stanley's beloved aunt, who has a wonderfully dry way of speaking the truth.

Is It Worth Making 'The Amazing Spider-Man 3'?

Andrew Garfield Emma Stone

Reviews have been a very mixed bag for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. While fans of the franchise generally enjoyed the movie, the overall consensus was that it was entertaining, but just wasn’t quite up to scratch. The critics weren’t as kind as the fans. Anthony Lane from the New Yorker described the whole franchise as “running shockingly low on juice,” while Vulture’s David Edelstein outright said, “I think I’ll pass on The Amazing Spider-Man 3.”

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 wasn't received as well as expected

Well, sadly for David Edelstein, as a film critic he probably doesn’t have much choice when it comes to passing on The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Or The Amazing Spider-Man 4, for that matter. Back in December 2013 (before the current installment was released), Sony announced that a further two Amazing Spider-Man films were in the works. The third movie is set to be released in June 2016, and various details have been hinted through a series of easter eggs and teasers.

"Neighbors" Parties On Top Of Box Office Chart, While Spidey Suffers Massive Drop

Seth Rogen Andrew Garfield Emma Stone

There were big changes in the box office chart this weekend, with Neighbors easily charging past the previous highest earner, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. While Neighbors had one of the highest debuts for an original R-rated comedy with $51,1 million, Spider-Man’s domestic earnings suffered significantly. The superhero flick, starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone only made aroumd $37,2 million at home over the Friday-Sunday period – an estimated 59% drop, according to Box Office Mojo. While the home figures are disappointing, the movie is making up for it overseas. To date, it's earned $147.9 million, and is on pace to finish between $210 and $220 million.

Seth Rogen and Zac Efron's collaboration is making a splash.

Neighbors, meanwhile, is following in the proud tradition of R-rated comedies and topped the debuts of hits like The Hangover, The Heat and 21 Jump Street. Seth Rogen in particular should be popping the champagne right about now, since the movie marks the highest grossing debut ever for a live-action Rogen movie ahead of The Green Hornet ($33.5 million).

But then there's the reviews. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ranks way, way lower than previous Spidey movies and with 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, is still 8% lower than the second lowest ranked movie - Sam Raimi's 2007 movie Spider-Man 3. Next comes The Amazing Spider-Man, which introduced Garfield as the webbed hero and nabbed 73% from critics. Raimi's original movie Spider-Man scored 89%, though the superb sequel landed a stunning 93% in 2004 with the unrivalled Alfred Molina as villain Dr Octavius.

Spider-man stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone have been dating for nearly three years and have worked to keep their relationship private. Box Office Review: "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" Headed For An Adequate $100 Million Debut

Andrew Jackson Jamie Foxx Emma Stone

Despite heavy promotion, The Amazing-Spider Man 2’s box office outlook going into the weekend isn’t too impressive. The film opens in 4000 theaters this weekend, and while the film has a good enough chance of coming on or near the top of the chart, it’s not likely to match the earlier success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Still
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - It's not perfect, but it's good enough, say critics.

The 2012 Sony reboot made a respectable $262 million and although it didn’t match the viral success of the Toby McGuire era, it still set up nicely for the new franchise. This time around, Andrew Jackson’s Peter Parker faces a whole merry band of villains, which reviewers say hurts the story somewhat. But despite generally ambivalent reviews, Spider-Man remains a recognizable enough character to draw in the crowds.

We’re just going to go right ahead and say this, we may love Emma Stone as much as we love Jennifer Lawrence! Quite a claim, but we think we can back it up.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 actress gets more loveable each time she makes an appearance, she can do no wrong in our eyes. Her lip syncing stint on Jimmy Fallon the other night just totally sealed the deal. Syncing to Blue Traveler’s Hook and DJ Khaled’s All I do is Win, Emma had us in stitches. Even Jimmy found it hard to contain himself, having to really pull it together to perform his second song.

'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Gets Thumbs-Up: Are You Ready USA?

Andrew Garfield Emma Stone

It must be pretty frustrating for American fans of the Spider-Man franchise who are left drumming their fingers on the table waiting to be the last country to experience this Marvel superhero sequel. With only two days to go, the excitement towards Marc Webb's epic action movie is palpable and it will all be worth it - if you listen to what most critics are saying.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2In All, 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Has Gone Down Well With Critics.

A jam-packed movie sees Peter Parker (Adnrew Garfield), AKA Spidey, battle a vicious wave of new foes, including Jamie Foxx's super-charged villain Electro and Dane DeHaan's wicked Green Goblin. However, young Peter has a tricky balancing act to do, making sure that his Aunt May (Sally Field) is kept in the dark about his powerful alter-ego and that his relationship girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) is maintained despite the relentless onslaught of baddies.

The Amazing Spider-man 2 Review

Good

As with the too-early franchise reboot in 2012, this sequel struggles to balance the demands of a teen romance with a superhero blockbuster. The interpersonal storylines are sharply written and skilfully played by the gifted cast, but the eye-catching effects sequences feel like little more than a shiny distraction. Action fans will love the way digitally animated Spidey swings more realistically than ever down the streets of New York, but the fact remains that these scenes are cartoons. And a new template is badly needed for this genre.

It kicks off as Peter (Andrew Garfield) nearly misses his high school graduation to save the city from another crazed nutcase. His girlfriend Gwen (Emma Stone) is fed up, and then crushed when Peter breaks up with her because he's worried about her safety. So she considers taking a place at Oxford University to get away. Meanwhile, Peter is also trying to understand the truth about why his parents (Campbell Scott and Embeth Davidtz) left him to be raised by his Aunt May (Sally Field). But he's interrupted from all of this by the arrival of old pal Harry (Dane DeHaan), back in town to inherit the family business from his dying dad (Chris Cooper) and in need of moral support from Peter.

In each of these three plot strands, Peter faces a significant dilemma that's beautifully played by Garfield as a cheeky, good guy who worries about the darkness all around him. And there's also a nefarious side-plot trying to take over the movie, as nerdy technician Max (Jamie Foxx) is transformed by an electric shock from Spider-man's biggest fan to a spark-emitting villain called Electro. This shift doesn't make sense on any level, and Harry also has a sudden personality change that's badly under-explained, forcing the film into a series of huge action showdowns along with a completely irrelevant aside about two colliding airplanes that feels tacked on to up the human stakes.

Taylor Swift Selena Gomez Kristen Stewart Lorde Sarah Hyland Emma Stone Lena Dunham

Taylor Swift is like the girl at high school who knows absolutely everybody, but you're not quite sure how.  She seems to move just as easily from friendship group to friendship group just as quickly as it takes for her to say, “Hey girlfriend!” But who does Taylor Swift count among her many celebrity BFFs?

Taylor Swift AMAs Taylor has more celebrity BFFs than she has American Music awards!

Taylor and Selena Gomez are always snapped together at various awards ceremonies. The pair originally met backstage at a Jonas Brothers’ concert and have became fast friends. “So much about our lives have changed over the last couple of years, but our friendship has stayed the same”, Taylor has said. Although she’s not the best option to give boyfriend advice, perhaps Taylor can offer Selena some wise words when it comes to her beau, Justin Bieber.

Spider-Man Is Jewish. Because Andrew Garfield Says So.

Andrew Garfield Spider Man Stan Lee Emma Stone

He's The Amazing Spider-Man, and he's very much Jewish - this according to the man that plays the superhero in the latest franchise, Andrew Garfield. The British-American actor, who was brought up Jewish, suggests that Spidey's neuroses are a sure-fire sign that the character is culturally Jewish.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Hits In May

"Spider-man is neurotic. Peter Parker is not a simple dude. He can't just switch off," Garfield told Time Out. "He never feels like he's doing enough. And Peter suffers from self-doubt. He ums and ahs about his future because he's neurotic. He's Jewish. It's a defining feature." Whether or not Spider-Man is of Jewish religion has been the subject of feverish internet speculation for years, but it seems Garfield, 30,has already made up his mind.

Just How Good Will 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Be?

Andrew Garfield Emma Stone

We still have about three weeks to wait until The Amazing Spider-Man 2 finally hits the big screen but we’re already bursting with anticipation. The photos and trailers that have been gradually trickling through have really managed to whet our appetites!  We predict that this one is going to the best of all the spider-man movies that have been released over the past 12 years or so (sorry Tobey!), if only because Dane DeHaan’s green goblin looks absolutely freaking terrifying!  The chemistry between Garfield and Stone is always palpable when they’re in a scene together as well, it’s part of what gives the franchise its magic.

Although there’s still a while to wait, a few reviews have started to circulate the web (get it?!), we thought we’d gather them all up and see what they have to say. We’ll try and put a good spin on it!  We’re just firing out the spidey puns left, right and center today.

The Reviews Are In: "The Amazing Spider-Man" Franchise Finds Its Footing With Sequel

Andrew Garfield Emma Stone Jamie Foxx

The Amazing-Spider Man 2 is out in the UK on April 16, more than two weeks ahead of its US premiere. However, thanks to the magic of press screenings, the reviews for it have already made their way online – most of them positive.

Amazing Spider-Man 2
Jamie Foxx's character seems to be a major selling point of the movie.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Leslie Felperin is mostly impressed with Garfield’s second outing with Spider-Man, even if the film is a bit too packed with villains. “The eponymous hero hits his super-heroic stride here, as does Andrew Garfield in the role, especially when Spider-Man's alter ego Peter Parker learns there's always some fine print in a contract with this many benefits,” Felperin writes. “Likeable as a lollipop” Emma Stone also gets a commendation, as does Jamie Foxx, playing a perfectly maniacal, pushed to the brink Electro: “Even under all the prosthetic make-up and visual effects, Foxx manages to project a literally white-hot rage and damaged psyche that threatens to upstage the core romantic plot about Peter and Gwen's relationship.”
