U2 have knocked EMINEM off the top of the American charts, with an album twice as successful as their previous offering.

The Irish rockers' new disc, HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB, shifted 840,000 copies to far outsell the debut week of its predecessor - 2000's ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND.

Eminem's Encore had a strong third week, selling 471,000 units to claim the number two spot, and new debuts from No Doubt star Gwen Stefani and American Idol winner Fantasia also fared well with 309,000 and 240,000 sales respectively, to claim the new chart's seventh and eighth spots.
