Scottish singer Emeli Sande scooped the first trophy at the 2013 BRIT Awards in London on Wednesday night (20Feb13).

Taylor Swift handed the British Female Solo Artist trophy to the Next To Me singer to kick off proceedings at the O2 Arena.

Sande hit the stage and gushed, "Wow, this feels amazing. This is incredible. I am so happy to win this award."

The ceremony opened with a pyrotechnics-packed performance from rockers Muse.

The group was joined onstage by a full orchestra for a fiery rendition of their anthem Supremacy.

Meanwhile, Mumford & Sons' fab February continued - the folk band was named Best British Group at the BRIT Awards.

The I Will Wait hitmakers picked up an Album of the Year Grammy earlier this month (10Feb13), and hours before collecting their latest accolade in London, they learned Babel had returned to the top of the U.S. charts.
