Scottish singer Emeli Sande scooped the first trophy at the 2013 BRIT Awards in London on Wednesday night (20Feb13).

Taylor Swift handed the British Female Solo Artist trophy to the Next To Me singer to kick off proceedings at the O2 Arena.

Sande hit the stage and gushed, "Wow, this feels amazing. This is incredible. I am so happy to win this award."

Sande is nominated in two more categories at the ceremony, which opened with a pyrotechnics-packed performance from rockers Muse.

The group was joined onstage by a full orchestra for a fiery rendition of their anthem Supremacy.

The opening set included plenty of fireworks, even though the group was reportedly ordered to scale down the pyrotechnics display due to strict safety regulations at the at the venue.
