James Arthur Eminem Emeli Sande

James Arthur walked away from the 2012 X Factor final as victor almost a year ago and as he looks forward to the future of his career, including the release of his debut, self-titled album, the singer has been contemplating the pressures of fame and how they may affect him. Speaking with the BBC, the singer insisted that he plans to stay 'authentic' and not bow to the pressures facing him.

After finding immediate fame with that most authentic of routes, through the talent show circuit, and then scoring his first number one single with a cover of Shontelle's 'Impossible,' James is determined to make a name for himself and not become another throwaway TV contestant. He spoke recently about how he has made an album that doesn't necessarily fit in with the typical X Factor mould, one that he is "proud" of and one that he has held a heavy presence over in all aspects.

Emeli Sande On Stephen Lawrence Memorial Concert – “Doreen's Story Inspired Me Greatly”

Emeli Sande

Amongst the myriad stars handpicked to perform at the Stephen Lawrence memorial concert, which marks twenty years since his tragic and racially motivated murder, is Emeli Sande, and the singer has opened up about the charity set to benefit from the gig.

"It's such an important charity and the work (that) Doreen is doing, is fantastic. Doreen's story inspired me greatly. It shows if you stand strong you can made a difference and make a change, she explained while speaking at the line-up announcement at Abbey Road Studios in London. "I was quite young when it happened but coming from a mixed-race family it was a big issue that we spoke about, and (we also spoke about) the issues you face being mixed race and this being something that happened in our country." Lawrence’s murder shocked the nation, and sparked an inquiry into the metropolitan police force, which was labelled as inherently racist as a result. Horrific as his death was, it raised awareness of racism in the U.K, and the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust – founded and chaired by his mother Doreen – continues to do great work.

Further special guests will accompany Sande, like Rizzle Kicks, Labrinth, Jamie Cullum and Soul II Soul, with more to be announced over the coming weeks. Tickets for the event will go on sale on Friday 21 June, with the actual event taking place at London's O2 arena on 29 September.

Emeli Sande has been awarded an honorary Doctor of the University degree by the University of Glasgow. The singer received the prestigious honour for her outstanding contribution to the music industry, reports BBC News.

Sande’s degree will no doubt sit proudly next to her other academic achievement – an intercalculated degree in neuroscience from the same university between 2006 and 2009. Professor John Briggs, Clerk of Senate and Vice-Principal of the University of Glasgow, said: “The University of Glasgow is very pleased to recognise Emeli Sande's huge contribution to music, both in the Uk and around the world, by awarding her an honorary degree.”

It’s been a ridiculously successful year for Sande, who performed at both the opening and closing ceremonies at the London Olympics. She has scored three number one singles from her debut album Our Version of Events, which has sold 1.5 million copies in the Uk alone. It spent 66 consecutive weeks in the Top 10, finally dropping out on May 26, 2013.

Noel Gallagher Slags Off One Direction At Ivor Novello Awards, (Takes Home A Gong)

Noel Gallagher One Direction Ivor Novello Awards Emeli Sande Randy Newman

"I come to the Ivor Novellos because One Direction aren't invited," said Noel Gallagher at this years Ivor Novello Awards, as the mouthy Mancunian commended the awards show for it's exclusivity and celebration of more obscure artists.

Among these often overlooked artists being recognised at Thursday's (May 16) event were three-time BRIT winning singer Emeli Sandé, who won two awards, Mercury Award winning act Alt-J, the multi-Oscar winning/nominated Randy Newman, and the multi-VMA and Grammy award winning Calvin Harris. Noel also picked up an award too, taking home the Outstanding Song Collection gong.

Speaking to NME on the red carpet just prior to the show, the former Oasis singer/guitarist said the reason he came to the awards show was "Because clowns like One Direction aren't invited, so it must be a good one" (and maybe the promise of an award would have enticed him in).
