SIR Elton John was originally offered the 1971 movie role that landed Bud Cort accolades in cult movie HAROLD + MAUDE - but turned the part down. The British rocker was staggered when he was sent the script for the movie about a gloomy youth who befriends a lively pensioner at a funeral. He recalls, "I was given the script, which BERNIE (TAUPIN, songwriting partner) and I read on the plane. It was brilliant. We were crying with laughter. "I had to turn it down because I was only just starting out and it would have broken all the momentum we were building. "Bud Cort did such a great job anyway - Harold + Maude is one of my favourite movies."
