Outspoken singer SIR Elton John has met US President George W Bush at a presidential reception in Washington DC - just weeks after branding the premier "the worst thing that ever happened to America".

John lashed out after Bush was re-elected at last month's (02NOV04) presidential election.

He said, "I just wanna scream. It's a nightmare. These idiots think they can get away with anything. It enrages me that people can smirk their way through it."

So fans will be stunned to see pictures of a smartly dressed John meeting Bush last night (05DEC04) as one of six entertainers honoured for their contribution to American culture at the 27th annual KENNEDY CENTER AWARDS.

He joined actor Warren Beatty, soprano DAME JOAN SUTHERLAND, composer JOHN WILLIAMS and husband-and-wife actor-producers Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee.

John described the award as "the icing on the cake", adding, "It's incredible for someone who's British to be given such an accolade from America."
