Altman Review

Excellent

This isn't a tell-all doc about the iconic filmmaker: it's a love letter from his friends and family. With a terrific range of film clips, home movies, behind-the-scenes footage and never-seen stills, this movie explores how Robert Altman's work has forever changed the way Hollywood makes movies, simply because his inventive filmmaking style forced everyone else to try and keep up.

After getting his start directing industrial films in Kansas City, Altman made the jump to Hollywood in the late 1950s, annoying a range of studio executives with his preference for naturalistic, overlapping dialogue in television programmes. Then he made the jump to cinema and took the world by storm with M.A.S.H. In 1970, winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes and introducing the "Altmanesque" combination of earthy interaction, ensemble casts and political subtext. In his documentary, filmmaker Ron Mann cleverly asks many of Altman's actors to define the word Altmanesque, not as it relates to the movies but as it relates to the man himself.

Altman was a rare filmmaker who was loved by his casts and crews as well as the critics. Notoriously picky film journalist Pauline Kael famously wrote that "he can make film fireworks out of next to nothing", and this documentary demonstrates this with clips and backstage moments from his classics, ranging from McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971), Buffalo Bill and the Indians (1976) and Popeye (1980) to The Player (1992), Short Cuts (1993) and Gosford Park (2001). The film's focus is on his movies, although it's narrated through personal interviews with Altman and his widow Kathryn Reed and features some superb footage of his sons. It also traces his ongoing health issues, from his heart transplant to his death from leukaemia in 2006. But there's little mention of his lifelong anti-war efforts or his controversial efforts to legalise marijuana.

Barbra Streisand Got Career Advice From Son

Barbra Streisand Seth Rogen JASON GOULD Elliott Gould

Barbra Streisand's son convinced her to sign up for new movie 'The Guilt Trip'.

The Oscar-winning actress stars alongside Seth Rogen in the film - playing a mother-son duo who embark on a cross-country road trip together - but she admits it was her real-life son, JASON GOULD, who persuaded her to take on the role because he has such good taste.

Barbra - who had Jason with ex-husband Elliott Gould - said: ''Jason was actually very important in my decision to make the movie because he was recovering from back surgery, so he was in bed for a few days. I brought the script over and read it out loud. His father was in the room, too. We were both coddling our son. So, he became the audience, and Jason was reading all the parts with me. He said, 'I think you should do it, mom,' and I really trust his integrity and opinion. He has great taste, in whatever he chooses to do. It's amazing. So, he clinched the deal.''

Ruby Sparks Review

Excellent

A romantic comedy with a dark twist, this film gets under the skin as it knowingly explores both the writing process and the nature of relationships. It also gives its cast a lot to play with in scenes that feature both broad slapstick and much more serious drama.

Paul Dano stars as Calvin, a writer who struck lightning with his first novel at age 19 and hasn't been able to write anything since. His brother (Messina) teases him about his future, his agent (Mandvi) is pushing him to write a new novel, and his therapist (Gould) just wants him to write something, anything. So he starts typing up a story about the girl (Kazan) who appears in his dreams. Then there she is, Ruby Sparks, in his kitchen! Sure he's officially losing his mind, he's shocked to discover that others can see her too. So he brings her into his life as his girlfriend, even introducing her to his hippie mother and stepdad (Benning and Banderas).

The film starts out as a breezy comedy, and Dano plays these scenes for laughs, including several broadly silly set-pieces as Calvin first meets Ruby. But the undertone very quickly starts turning serious, as we begin to understand the central themes about how we relate to our partners. Would we control their behaviour if we could? Get rid of annoying habits? Make them be more like our idea of the perfect spouse? But of course, that would cause a whole new set of problems.

Barbra Streisand Barbara Walters Jimmy Fallon Sting Katie Couric Woody Allen Michael Douglas Michael Bloomberg Calvin Klein Donna Karan Ralph Lauren Michael Kors Elliott Gould

Barbra Streisand is now half-way through her triumphant homecoming, having performed to a sell-out audience at Brooklyn’s Barclays Centre for the first time last night (October 11, 2012). The screen, stage and studio superstar will head back to her home town’s new massive concert venue for a second time tomorrow (October 13), before hitting the road once again as she continues her already massively successful Barbra Live tour.

Whilst blaSting out the hits last night, there was no shortage of famous faces in the crowd, with Barbara Walters, Jimmy Fallon, Sting, Katie Couric, Woody Allen, Michael Douglas and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg all spotted in the crowd. And if that wasn’t enough, the upper echelons of the fashion world also made an appearance at the show, designers Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors being spotted in the audience.

Streisand's ex-husband, Elliott Gould, was also at the event, in support of his and Barbara’s son Jason, who accompanied his mother on stage. Barbra introduced Jason to the audience as her “pride and joy,” before performing ‘How Deep Is the Ocean’ together.

Ruby Sparks Trailer

Ruby Sparks tells the story of a successful young novelist who starts to suffer from writer's block. Eventually, though, Calvin makes a huge development and invents Ruby Sparks; a beautiful, red-headed female character who he begins to fall madly in love with - despite her being a figment his imagination. or so he thinks. A week later he finds her casually sprawled on his couch and although Calvin tries to pass her off as the hallucinations of an over-active imagination, it soon becomes clear that his words have manifested themselves into a real-life person. More accurately, a real-life love interest.

Contagion Review

Excellent
Soderbergh applies his brainier brand of filmmaking to the global outbreak thriller genre, and the result is a hugely gripping blockbuster that never talks down to its audience. It's also terrifyingly believable as we watch a deadly flu virus spread around the world.

In Minneapolis, Mitch (Damon) is horrified when his wife (Paltrow) comes home from a business trip to China, collapses with the flu and dies. But she's only the first of a series of similar cases around the world, and soon officials from the Centers for Disease Control (Winslet, Fishburne and Ehle) and the World Health Organisation (Cotillard) are on the case, trying to manage emerging clusters while tracing the disease back to its source. Meanwhile, a blog hack (Law) is pestering a San Francisco scientist (Gould) for a cure.

A new biography of Barbra Streisand alleges the superstar's list of lovers includes DIANA, Princess Of Wales' former husband Prince Charles and her lover Dodi Fayed. BARBRA: THE WAY SHE IS by CHRISTOPHER ANDERSON claims Streisand is "cheap", has a "MARIA CALLAS-sized ego", is prone to huge tantrums and has a star-studded list of former conquests. Warren Beatty, Ryan O'Neal, Steve McQueen, Kris Kristofferson, Don Johnson, Jon Voight, Elliott Gould, Andre Agassi, Richard Gere, Omar Sharif, Liam Neeson and Peter Jennings are just some of the men linked with her. Anderson also alleges Streisand, 63, was banned from the White House during Bill Clinton's presidency by his wife Hillary after the former First Lady discovered the actress had stayed overnight while she was away, the New York Post reports. Streisand's Son Fights Pneumonia In Secret

Barbra Streisand JASON GOULD Elliott Gould

Barbra Streisand's HIV positive son JASON GOULD refused to allow doctors to contact his famous parents when he recently fell ill with pneumonia - because he feared they'd worry too much. Sick Gould reportedly called a team of medics to his New York apartment when he first fell ill and insisted his latest health crisis be kept from Streisand and his actor dad Elliott Gould. A family insider tells US tabloid National Enquirer, "Barbra has probably worried herself sick ever since he was diagnosed as HIV positive in 2003. She would have been climbing the walls if she knew how sick Jason was the last time. "He was extremely ill. Because of the HIV, the chills and shakes that come with pneumonia were far more intense... It was touch and go for almost a week." The health scare was the latest in a series of medical problems for Gould, who also suffers chronic intestinal problems.
