Ellen Burstyn salvaged her acting career by pretending she was older than she actually is. Movie roles dried up when the actress hit 50, so she took things into her own hands - and kickstarted her career in the 1990s. The 75-year-old Oscar winner tells the New York Daily News, "I did go through lean years. But then I figured out that female characters disappear at about age 50 and reappear as grandmothers. "So I started applying ageing make-up and jumped right into grandmother roles."
