Ed Sheeran has revealed that he’ll be undergoing surgery to repair a burst eardrum when his lengthy world tour concludes in New Zealand this week. The British singer revealed that he sustained the injury after jumping off a boat in Spain earlier this year.

The 24 year old singer, who’s been in the road for what seems like forever in support of his multi-million selling second album X, told Australian radio station Nova that he’ll be undergoing a graft to repair his ruptured eardrum in the new year when he returns home to Britain.

“I have to have an operation in January on my ear because I stupidly jumped off a yacht really high up and smashed it,” he revealed. “I landed wrong and it burst my eardrum so I have to go and get a graft, which means I'm not allowed to fly for a while, so it's kind of good it means I have to stay at home!”

Sheeran, who earlier this week was nominated for three Grammy Awards, said that the painful accident happened while he was enjoying a holiday with friends.

“I didn't realise what happened until I went in water again and it's the most painful thing having a hole in your ear drum and having water go in,” he continued, saying that he had decided to rent a boat on the last day of their holiday in a shared house.

“On the last day it was three of their 24th birthdays and I just thought, ‘b***er it, I'll rent a yacht and we'll just go out and escape all the pandemonium’,” Sheeran remembered. “And yeah, it was pretty fun but that's when the jumping off incident happened.”

Nova FM has had a special week of programming featuring a raft of guest stars, and interviewed Sheeran as part of that. The singer admitted that the burst eardrum was just one of a number of accidents he’s suffered while touring in the past.

“I always cut my hands open on something, last time I did that was last year,” he said. “I just tried to open a beer bottle, you know how you can open beer bottles with lighters? So I tried to do that with another beer bottle and it just kind of shattered in my hand. It's usually beer bottles that smash in my hands and cut them open, but I have a load of scars on my hands.”
