Arguably the worst-kept secret in the music industry has been confirmed: Ed Sheeran will indeed be playing this year’s Glastonbury Festival as the third and final headliner.

The 26 year old megastar, whose newly-released third album Divide was released at the start of March, will be headlining on the Sunday night alongside previously announced headliners Radiohead (Friday) and Foo Fighters.

Confirming the news in a short Instagram film, Sheeran himself described the opportunity to headline the most prestigious festival in the world as “awesome”, and it brings to an end months of speculation as to who the final headliner would be. The full line-up of the 2017 Glastonbury Festival will be announced in the near future.

Social media has been divided (geddit?) on the issue since Sheeran’s Sunday night slot was confirmed on Thursday evening (March 16th), with many dismayed at the decision to put “three white male acts” at the top of the bill and calling for greater diversity.

Currently dominating charts around the world, and with nine of his songs in the Top 10 of the British singles chart, Sheeran has enjoyed a brief but meteoric rise to become arguably the biggest pop star in the world right now.

Indeed, his progress can be tracked through his Glastonbury appearances. He has played the festival on two previous occasions: in 2011, on the tiny Croissant Neuf stage and for BBC Introducing…, and in 2014 when he played an early evening set on the main Pyramid Stage and led the crowd in a sing-along of smash hit 'Sing'.

Glastonbury 2017 has already sold out, though a very small re-sale is set for the first week of April, and will take place between June 21st-25th.
