Ed Sheeran Up For BMI Awards For Third Consecutive Year

Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran’s globe-conquering ubiquity goes on with the news that he’s scooped a third consecutive BMI London song of the year nomination, an award that recognises the most played song by British or European writers from the Broadcast Music Inc. catalogue across radio and television in America.

‘Shape of You’, the lead-off single from 2017’s multi-platinum third album Divide, has received the nomination this time around, following wins for ‘Thinking Out Loud’ in 2016 and ‘Love Yourself’, his duet with Justin Bieber, last year.

The 27 year old singer-songwriter faces competition from The Weeknd, Norwegian DJ Kygo and Selena Gomez, Russian producer Zedd and Alessia Cara, and former ‘X Factor’ winner James Arthur for the grand prize.

Dave Grohl PERFORMS NIRVANA’S ‘IN BLOOM’

Since finding colossal fame on his own terms with Foo Fighters all those years ago, Dave Grohl very rarely breaks into his former band Nirvana’s catalogue.

However, this week he made an exception, taking to the drums for a guest spot alongside Trombone Shorty at Los Angeles’ Voodoo Threauxdown Festival for a rendition of ‘In Bloom’, the classic fourth single from Nirvana’s Nevermind album.

The Internet Loves Taylor Swift And Ed Sheeran's Cute Friendship

Taylor Swift Ed Sheeran

The internet has died of cute at Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran’s cute friendship, after Taylor posted an Instagram video in which she pokes fun at his lack fitness while on a hike.

In the clip posted on Wednesday (September 12th), Swift could be seen giggling as she filmed her best friend Ed puffing out of breath behind her while they were out hiking outside Taylor’s home city of Nashville.

“You okay, bro?” she eventually teases Sheeran, which resulted in the worn-out English singer flipping the bird at the camera, leaving Swift laughing.

Viagogo Launch Fraud Lawsuit Against Ed Sheeran's Tour Promoters

Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran’s tour promoters have been sued by event ticket re-sale company Viagogo for alleged fraud, marking the latest development in a long-running battle regarding ticket touting and second-hand sales.

The ticket company announced that it has issued legal proceedings in a German court against Kilimanjaro Live over the promoter’s decision to void thousands of tickets to Sheeran’s recent tour that had been purchased through Viagogo.

According to a report on Wednesday (September 5th) by the BBC, Viagogo alleges that tickets that fans had bought from them were later marked as void, with the customers apparently told to buy another ticket and then request a refund from Viagogo. They claim that Kilimanjaro Live was therefore “pocketing millions of pounds in duplicate sales”.

Ed Sheeran Goes Under The Radar With Cherry Seaborn Marriage

Ed Sheeran

Despite the fact that Ed Sheeran was very open about his engagement to Cherry Seaborn, it seems he's managed to wed her without anyone realising this year. In a recent interview, he seemed to sheepishly confirm their marriage having only been engaged since the New Year.

Asked if he had any details confirmed about the date and place of his wedding, the 27-year-old 'Castle on the Hill' hitmaker simply continued grinning, shrugged, and slyly gestured towards the silver ring on his finger. He then blushed and laughed at the Access interviewer's complete surprise as he rushed to congratulate the star.

Ticket Touts Using 'Bots' Now Liable To Unlimited Fines

Ed Sheeran Arctic Monkeys

Ticket touts who use automated software known as ‘bots’ in order to gobble up huge amounts of tickets to sell on at inflated prices now face the potential of unlimited fines under new British laws enacted today.

Over the last couple of years, major artists such as Ed Sheeran, Arctic Monkeys and Iron Maiden have been publicising the issue of so-called ‘secondary ticketing’, where unscrupulous use sites like Viagogo or StubHub to re-sell tickets at enormous mark-ups for popular events which sell out in seconds because of the software that allows them to buy huge numbers of tickets in one go.

The change in the law was announced by the British government back in January this year and comes into force on Thursday (July 5th), and those found to be using ‘bot’ software are liable to unlimited fines by British courts.

Ed Sheeran Hits Back With 'Shape Of You' Lawsuit Of His Own

Ed Sheeran

Days after his hit song 'Thinking Out Loud' was sued for a second time over plagiarism allegations, Ed Sheeran is taking out his own lawsuit following the suspension of royalties for his other number one 'Shape Of You'. He wants the millions he's lost since a small-time musician accused him of copying his song.

It's been estimated that 'Shape Of You' has lost £20 million in revenue since royalties were suspended on May 10th by the court following musician Sam Chokri's claims that the track ripped off his song 'Oh Why'. The pay-outs were banned by The Performing Rights Society, but Ed's lawyers aren't having it.

Ed Sheeran Sued For Copyright Infringement Of Marvin Gaye Song

Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran is reportedly the subject of yet another copyright infringement lawsuit, this time being sued for $100 million for allegedly using multiple musical components of Marvin Gaye’s classic ‘Let’s Get It On’ for his 2014 hit ‘Thinking Out Loud’.

A lawsuit filed in the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals in New York claims that the British star copied Gaye’s song’s “melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bassline, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping” for his huge hit single released four years ago from his second album X.

‘Thinking Out Loud’ was an enormous worldwide success, reaching the top of the UK Singles Chart and no.2 in the US Billboard Hot 100, with its parent album selling more than 15 million copies.

The Year Of The Plagiarist: Artists Accused Of Stealing Music In The Last Year

Childish Gambino Ed Sheeran Taylor Swift

It seems we can't go a year without some big hit being slapped with an accusation of plagiarism by a usually not-famous songwriter. In 2014 it was Robin Thicke and Pharrell's 'Blurred Lines', then it was Sam Smith's 'Stay With Me' and Mark Ronson's 'Uptown Funk', and the case regarding Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway To Heaven' was even appealed in 2017.

This last year really seems to have been thick with copyright infringement claims, with the latest being Childish Gambino and his politically-charged monster hit 'This Is America'.

Ed Sheeran's Chapel Plans Stymied By Endangered Newts

Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran’s plans to build a private chapel on his Suffolk estate has been postponed in order for wildlife experts to check for great chested newts on the property.

The 27 year old star has been forced by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust to hire conservation experts to check for the protected amphibian species on his land, before he can get permission to build the chapel.

Sheeran announced his engagement to his long-term girlfriend Cherry Seaborn back in January this year, and at the same time lodged a planning application with the Suffolk Coastal District Council to build a Saxon-style flint chapel structure on his land, where he wants to wed.

Ed Sheeran Criticises Use Of 'Small Bump' By Irish Pro-Life Campaigners

Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran has issued a statement asserting that he has not given permission for his song ‘Small Bump’ to be used by anti-abortion campaigners in the upcoming Irish referendum on the subject.

The song, which was included on his first studio album + back in 2011 and released as a single the following year, was reportedly being played by activists plugging the pro-life campaign in Dublin’s city centre over the weekend, just a week away from the referendum on the Eighth Amendment to the constitution.

The track’s lyrics include lines like: “You’re just a small bump unknown, you’ll grow into your skin / With a smile like hers and a dimple beneath your chin / Fingernails the size of a half grain of rice, and eyelids closed to be soon opened wide / A small bump, in four months you’ll open your eyes.”

Ed Sheeran Is UK's Top Earning Young Musician In Sunday Times Rich List

Ed Sheeran Rita Ora Calvin Harris

It’s been a great year in financial terms for young British artists, with Ed Sheeran, Rita Ora and Calvin Harris all shooting up the Sunday Times’ Rich List after enjoying significant chart success over the last 12 months.

27 year old Sheeran, who released his third album Divide to such huge success in early 2017 that all 16 tracks made the top twenty of the UK Singles Chart, has seen his wealth grow by £28 million over the last year alone, meaning he’s now worth an estimated £80 million, according to the list published on Thursday (May 10th).

However, that still puts him a way behind the traditional big earners in British pop music, with Sir Paul McCartney heading the list with an estimated worth of £820 million.

Sir Elton John Warns Ed Sheeran His "Heyday" Won't Last Forever

Elton John Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran may be the biggest male pop star in the world right now, but his friend and mentor Sir Elton John has warned the young British singer that his fame won’t last forever, and neither will his songs be so loved.

The 71 year old pop legend was speaking about the nature of massive worldwide fame on fellow singer George Ezra’s podcast this week, and said that 27 year old Ed’s music won’t be popular forever, and that he must be prepared for that eventual downturn.

“You have a heyday and you have a rest, and the heyday can never be replaced,” Sir Elton explained about his own experiences. “After that I had the common sense to know I’m not going to have a number one every time straight away. I knew someone else would take over. It’s cyclical.”

British Record Labels See Fastest Rate Of Growth Since Britpop

Ed Sheeran

Much has been made of the existential threat to the music industry over the years, but that trend doesn’t seem to be applying to the British music scene, with record labels in the UK currently seeing the fastest rates of income growth since the height of Britpop in the 1990s.

New figures published by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in its annual yearbook on Wednesday (March 11th) showed that trade income increased by 10.6% in 2017 to a total of £839.4 million.

The British industry hasn’t seen anything like this level of growth since the explosion in indie and rock back in the mid-Nineties, when the likes of Blur and Oasis ruled the charts. Indeed, the figures are only just below the 10.7% levels of growth seen 22 years before in 1995.

This week, Ed dropped his own legal documents denying all claims that he copied the music without permission or that the tracks even have any similarities.
