'Baywatch' Takes A Beating From The Critics

Dwayne Johnson Zac Efron

When it was announced there was to be a big screen release of 'Baywatch', based on the original television series of the same name, not many people really knew what to expect. So, following the reveal that Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Zac Efron would be leading proceedings came a little hope that this could be the revival the franchise needed.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case if recent critical reviews are anything to go by. Currently sitting at just 19% on reviews aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, the film hasn't just failed to make a splash, but it's really being hammered by those who can have a big influence on box office numbers.

Dwayne Johnson And Tom Hanks Run For Office In 'SNL' Skit

Dwayne Johnson for President? That sounds like a good idea considering what politics is at the moment. The actor joked about running for office while hosting 'Saturday Night Live' for the fifth time last week, and even brought along Tom Hanks as his 'running mate'.

Dwayne Johnson Could Be The Lead Star In 'Fast & Furious' Spinoff

Dwayne Johnson

Just a few weeks ago, 'Fast & Furious 8' - otherwise known as 'The Fate of the Furious' - opened in cinemas across the globe to incredible box office numbers. Breaking a number of records including the one for biggest global box office, the film took an estimated $532.5 million over Easter weekend, knocking the $529 million taken by 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' out of the top spot.

Despite that, takings in the US alone did take quite a sharp drop, with the instalment picking up $100.2 million against the $147.2 million taken by 'Furious 7'. Still, this information could be deemed irrelevant by those at Universal who are celebrating worldwide records, and it would seem that they're now moving ahead with plans for future additions to the 'Fast & Furious' franchise.

Dwayne Johnson 'always' Questions Himself About His Next Venture After A Successful Movie

Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson ''always'' pauses to quiz himself about his next venture after the success of a movie.

The 44-year-old actor - who was known as The Rock when he was a wrestler - is overwhelmed by the success of 'Fast and Furious 8', which sees him play the role of Luke Hobbs in the action film, and he has admitted after a huge achievement like this he asks himself ''critical questions'' about his future.

Alongside a picture of the film's billboard campaign, which was shared on his Instagram account, he wrote: ''Biggest global box office opening of all time and the most fun, get the job done, sh*t talkin' character I've ever played. THANK YOU.

The Fate Of The Furious Review

Very Good

With the more dumbed-down title Fast & Furious 8 outside of North America, this overcrowded franchise continues in its trajectory to provide mindlessly outrageous thrills involving muscly guys, tough girls and loud cars. This episode is marginally more grounded than the high-flying previous instalment, but it's still utterly preposterous. It's also a huge amount of fun, thanks to the snappy cast and far larger than life driving stunts.

We catch up with Dom and Letty (Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez) living in Havana and challenging the locals to some vroom-vroom racing antics. But their happy life is interrupted by the arrival of Cipher (Charlize Theron), a mysterious woman who has something on Dom and lures him to the dark side. To stop Cipher's nefarious plan, Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) is brought back into action by Mr Nobody (Kurt Russell) and his rookie colleague Eric (Scott Eastwood), who also draft in Letty and the team (Tyrese Gibson, Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges and Nathalie Emmanuel) before heading off to Berlin. Things don't go so well there, so they bring in hothead nemesis Deckard (Jason Statham) and chase Dom and Cipher to New York and Arctic Russia for even more outrageous vehicular mayhem.

New to the franchise, director F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) gives the film a gritty edge that sits surprisingly well with a stream of wry comedy running right through every scene. He also kicks off the action from the opening shot, then barely pauses for breath for a odd moment of plot exposition or emotion along the way. This is full-on action entertainment, riotously over-the-top and hilariously enjoyable, even if it's dumb as a post. And the action sequences are jaw-droppingly enormous.

'Furious 7' Vrooms Into Cinemas

Paul Walker Dwayne Johnson Jason Statham Vin Diesel

In less than a week, the seventh film in the 'Fast & Furious' franchise has passed $500 million at the global box office, and doesn't look likely to slow down until the end of the month, when 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' arrives. 'Furious 7' is poised to not only maintain its dominance on box office charts, but the movie is certain to become 2015's biggest hit next weekend when it passes the global total earned by 'Fifty Shades of Grey' ($566 million). And it hasn't opened yet in major markets like China, Russia or Japan.

In North America, 'Furious 7' had the fourth best opening of all time, after two 'Harry Potter films' and 'The Avengers'. In the UK, 'Furious 7' opened bigger than any 2014 release, and has already outgrossed the lifetime UK totals of all previous films in the franchise.

'Furious 7' Breaks American And International Box Offices

Vin Diesel Dwayne Johnson Paul Walker

As widely predicted, Furious 7 romped to victory at American box offices this weekend, but what wasn’t expected was the scale of its success internationally. Incredibly, the film has debuted at number one in every single territory in which it’s been released thus far.

The Universal flick, starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and the late Paul Walker, has taken a staggering $240.4 million from international box offices. Added to the receipts from the American domestic audience, that makes a total of $384 million in ticket sales since the release date of April 3rd, CNN Money reports.

Furious 7 Set To Top All Predecessors

Paul Walker Dwayne Johnson Vin Diesel

The Fast & Furious franchise is going out with a bang. Or, if we’re talking sounds, it’s probably more of a ka-ching.  Since its release on Thursday, Furious 7 has already recorded the highest opening of 2015. On Friday, the flick made a spectacular $67.3 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Furious 7
Furious 7 gave Paul Walker a final tribute.

The numbers put it on track to close the weekend past the $150 million mark. Of course, we won’t know until Monday morning. According to BOM’s stats, this puts the flick in tenth place for all-time biggest opening, on par with The Hunger Games and The Dark Knight. It's up 74 percent on Fast & Furious 6, which was the previous best debut in the 14-year-old franchise. In a single day, Furious 7 has already earned more than the third instalment in the franchise (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) grossed during its entire run.

Furious 7 Review

Very Good

For their seventh adventure, the Fast & Furious cast and crew continue to outdo themselves with mind-boggling stunt driving and outrageous action mayhem, this time infusing everything with emotion as a way of honouring late actor Paul Walker. The rip-roaring pace and more internalised drama combine effectively to create a riotous thrill ride that might actually bring a lump to the throat. Even if it's all utterly preposterous, it's solidly entertaining.

Things pick up right where Part 6 left off, with former black-ops killer Deckerd Shaw (Jason Statham, who else?) determined to avenge his fallen brother. As he tracks them down, Dominic and Brian (Vin Diesel and Paul Walker) have reassembled their team (Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges) to take a job with shady government agent Mr Nobody (Kurt Russell). Their target is the even shadier villain Jakanda (Djimon Hounsou), who has kidnapped a genius hacker (Nathalie Emmanuel) to get his hands on her all-seeing gadget. But Shaw is on their trail as they track Jakanda to the mountains of Azerbaijan, and he interrupts their mission there as well as in the deserts of Abu Dhabi and the streets of downtown Los Angeles.

The double-edged premise offers all kinds of opportunity for plot twists, but of course the main point of these movies is to create increasingly insane set-pieces. This time, the film opens with Brian explaining to his young son that cars can't fly, after which director James Wan proves otherwise, flinging our heroes' hot rods into the sky from airplanes, tower blocks and cliff tops. Amazingly, they seem able to steer even in mid-air! But never mind, it looks so painfully cool that there's little do do but sit back and enjoy the chaos, knowing that even though a flashy vehicle is destroyed every minute, there's a newer, more awesome car coming in the next scene.

Dwayne Johnson Turns SNL On Its Head

Dwayne Johnson Kate McKinnon

Saturday Night Live came back with a bang (you'll see what I mean) last night, with an episode hosted by Dwayne Johnson himself. Clearly, any attempts at subtlety were thrown out the window. Basically, Johnson spent a significant chunk of the show with his face thrust in another man's crotch in a "standing 69."

Dwayne Johnson
Remember, guys, the Rock is a serious actor now.

Yep, it was one of those episodes. The golden moment came during a segment depicting an "Indiana Jones" knockoff movie, "Escape From Jungle Island." Johnson, playing "Dr. Bones" - get it? Huh? You got it - plays an adventurer who finds himself on an island with a male companion, Shortlong, and a female companion, who's desperate for Dr. Bones' attention.

California is well-known for playing host to regular earthquakes, being located right on top of the San Andreas fault; in other words, the tectonic plate boundary that separates the Pacific and the North American Plates. However, rarely have earthquakes been seen that have reduced whole cites to rubble, caused huge chasms in the Earth and deadly tidal waves through streets killing thousands of people. The only option for residents is to get as far away as possible, though with such a huge disaster ripping through the state, this one is still going to have an effect on the other side of the country. Meanwhile, chopper pilot Ray and his estranged wife are desperate to find their missing daughter Blake first, and use a Fire Department rescue helicopter to search high and low throughout the state.

"Furious 7" Trailer Revealed: Is This The End Of An Era?

Paul Walker Vin Diesel Michelle Rodriguez Dwayne Johnson

The first trailer for Furious 7  (aka the seventh Fast & Furious) is out and here’s the good news – it’s faster and furious-er than ever. The late Paul Walker takes the honorary spot in a trailer that features him dangling off a cliff and then running up a bus dangling from that same cliff and into a truck... oh, you’ll just have to watch the trailer. Also, camels.

Paul Walker
Almost a year after Paul Walker's death, the actor received another tribute at the trailer launch.

No, I’m not even kidding. Featuring the ominous line “One last ride.” And Vin Diesel’s epic “I don’t have friends. I have family,” this one might actually be a tear-jerker. In some of the last material he filmed before his shocking death – in a car crash, of all things – last year, Paul Walker returns as Brian O’Connor, partnering with Vin Diesel’s  Dominic “Dom” Torretto for one final heist.

"Hercules" Falters, While "Lucy" Shines At The Box Office With $44 Million

Scarlett Johansson Dwayne Johnson

This week at the box office, the sci-fi thriller Lucy won out over slim competition – Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson and the holdover hit from last week Dawn of the Planet of the Apes took second and third, respectively. Deservingly or not – the reviewers have questioned everything about Lucy from the plot, to the execution, to most of the action. Even Scarlett Johansson’s acting barely gets a pass, thanks to the godawful material she’s working with, according to The Atlantic. Humans only use 10% of their brain? This Luc Besson sci-fi thriller uses even less. Regardless, whatever limited brain capacity Lucy was working with, propelled it to a $44 million weekend, well beyond critical predictions, which put it somewhere around $40 million.

Scarlett Johansson
Only an intense love for Johansson's screen presence can save viewers from scoffing their way through this one.

Brainy "Lucy" Outsmarts Dwayne Johnson's "Hercules" At The Box Office

Scarlett Johansson Dwayne Johnson

Despite lukewarm reviews, the Scarlet Johansson starrer Lucy has gone on to best Dwayne Johnson’s latest crack at a franchise starter, Hercules. Lucy, a sci-fi flick about a woman with unlimited mental capacities is on track to finish the weekend past its projected $35 million. The movie registered $17,1 million on Friday and has seen Johansson’s star rise even higher. With films like 2013’s Under the Skin and Her, her Avengers role as Black Widow (the character is soon to have her own film) and now Lucy, the savvy actress has flexed both her acting brains and brawn in the sci-fi genre.

Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson is only going up.

Though he definitely has a lot of power in his own way, Dwayne Johnson didn’t have enough strength as Hercules at the box office. The eponymous flick, based on a 2011 graphic novel and directed by Brett Ratner took in a disappointing $11 million on Friday. However, as these types of film often do, Hercules fared much better internationally. It was released in 19 markets this week and still may do better than originally projected. Lucy won’t open internationally until next week.

Two 'Hercules' Movie Releases This Year. One Is Very Good.

Directed by Finnish action maestro Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger), the movie was shot in Bulgaria and earned a paltry $61 million at the global box office (it cost more than $70 million to make). Even worse, the film has a dire 3% positive rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics, and a slightly better 35% of audiences that liked it.

Hercules Review

Very Good

Far more entertaining than it has any right to be, this is a big, messy blockbuster retelling of the Greek myth that thankfully has a sharp sense of humour and some surprising twists up its sleeve. The cast is also packed with veteran performers who know how to make the most of some eyebrow-raising innuendo, generating intrigue while keeping the audience laughing with them rather than at them.

The premise takes a revisionist approach, grounding the legend of the demigod Hercules (Dwayne Johnson) in real stories that have been exaggerated by his nephew Iolaus (Reece Ritchie), who travels with him as a kind of toga-era marketing expert. Their team of mercenaries includes wryly fatalistic seer Amphiaraus (Ian McShane), quick-witted blade-thrower Autolycus (Rufus Sewell), bow-wielding amazon Atalanta (Ingrid Bolso Berdal) and loyal mute warrior Tydeus (Aksel Hennie). When they're offered a fortune by Lord Cotys (John Hurt) to quell a rebellion, they find themselves in the middle of a massive battle that doesn't go the way they expected. And as events take unforeseen turns, Hercules and his gang have to dig deep to turn the tide in their favour.

Johnson is a natural in the role, so massively pumped up that he looks like he could be popped with a pin. His hulking physique and just enough back-story give the character's reputation some weight, both literally and figuratively, so even if he's not half-god his achievements are still pretty impressive. (There are also plenty of hints that he may turn out to be a god after all.) And the surrounding characters add to this with cleverly written roles that are expertly played by British scene-stealers Hurt, McShane, Sewell, Mullan and Fiennes. McShane is so good that he essentially walks off with the whole movie. But relative newcomers Ritchie, Hennie and Berdal more than hold their own.

Dwayne Johnson Battles His Way Through Non-Stop Absurdity In "Hercules"

Dwayne Johnson

It’s Hercules time! So we know that Dwayne Johnson made a lot of money off the mythical epic. And let’s be honest – it’s Dwayne Johnson and Greek myth, we’re definitely going to enjoy this. But is it actually a good movie? That’s the million – or in this case $110 million – question. Sadly, it looks like a firm “no” at this point.

Dwayne Johnson, Hercules
Well, if there's anyone who could pull off Herc, it's this guy.

Critics from the UK, where the film has been out for a week, have already panned it as not worth the ticket. So far it’s been called “an artistically bankrupt misfire” (Digital Spy) and “crude, calorific and full of half-jokes” (The Telegraph).

Robert Downey Jr Is The Biggest Earner In Hollywood, Again

Robert Downey Jr Dwayne Johnson Bradley Cooper Chris Hemsworth

Robert Downey Jr. is the highest paid actor in Hollywood for a second year running, Forbes has announced, putting Iron Man star top of the list with earnings totalling around $75 million. It is his involvement with the Marvel franchise that boosts his position to pole – the movie bagged around $1.2b when it was released last May and comprises the bulk of his counted earnings.

Given Iron Man’s heavy involvement with the Avengers team – the highest grossing single film in the entirety of the company’s output – Downey Jr. presence in the upcoming instalment, Age of Ultron, means he’ll be ‘there or there abouts’ for a few years to come, we’d predict.

Robert Downey Jr Crowned King Of The Box Office

Robert Downey Jr Dwayne Johnson Bradley Cooper Leonardo Dicaprio Chris Hemsworth

With an estimated income of $75 million between June 2013 and June 2014, Downey Jr. shows that he's somewhat similar to his onscreen counterpart, billionaire superhero Tony Stark. 2014 has actually been a fairly quiet year for Downey Jr. considering there is no Marvel blockbuster hitting our screens (featuring him, at any rate) but he still managed to maintain his spot at the top.

‘Fast & Furious 7’ Release Pulled Forward To April 3rd After Paul Walker Death Delay

Paul Walker Vin Diesel Tyrese Gibson Jason Statham Jordana Brewster Michelle Rodriguez Dwayne Johnson Kurt Russell Djimon Hounsou Tony Jaa

The release date of the next Fast & Furious movie has been pulled forward by a week from the 10th April to the 3rd April 2015, Universal Pictures has announced. According to THR, the decision was made to allow the action sequel to have "more international playdates."

The movie was originally scheduled for release this summer but actor Paul Walker's tragic death last November meant the filmmakers had to reconfigure some of the scenes he was scheduled to shoot. Walker died in a high speed Californian car crash along with his friend Roger Rodas and was killed instantly on collision with roadside obstacles.

Walker will still be featured in Fast 7 but some of his scenes will have been edited to account for his unfinished filming. He will be seen starring alongside franchise returners Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster.

Does Dwayne Johnson Have The A-List Clout To Carry 'Hercules'?

Dwayne Johnson John Hurt Ian McShane

Despite packing a pretty tremendous supporting cast including Ian McShane, John Hurt and Rufus Sewell, Brett Ratner's 3-D epic Hercules is about only one actor: Dwayne Johnson. The former WWE superstar has proved his clout in the blockbuster box-office game, though Paramount's new big-budget action is almost certainly his biggest test yet.

Hercules - Trailer Trailer

Hercules is a bitter and haunted demi-god filled with resentment for the people and the gods (including his father Zeus) who put him through the Twelve Labours; a series of arduous tasks that saw him dance with death on a number of occasions. Now, alone and with no family of any kind to turn to, his only comfort in the world is fighting to the death in battle, alongside a group of other like-minded warriors who similarly have nothing left to live for. However, they face a challenge of a more ominous kind when the King of Thrace enlists them to train up as the most formidable army ever created in a bid to overthrow a powerful general. This is a fight of a different kind for Hercules; he may have more strength than the average man, but just how far will that take him?

Dwayne Johnson stars as Hercules in the latest adaptation of the Greco-Roman myth. Based on the graphic novel 'Hercules: The Thracian Wars' by Steve Moore, the movie has been directed by Brett Ratner ('Rush Hour', 'X-Men: The Last Stand', 'Red Dragon') and written by Ryan Condal ('The Sixth Gun') and Evan Spiliotopoulos ('The Nutty Professor', 'Battle for Terra'). 'Hercules' is scheduled for UK cinematic release on August 8th 2014.

Plot Twist: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Tops Forbes Highest Grossing Actors List

Dwayne Johnson Robert Downey Jr Steve Carell Sandra Bullock Jennifer Lawrence

Let’s talk about how Dwayne Johnson was named the highest grossing actor of 2013. No seriously, you did not misread that. Thanks to profits from the incredibly successful Fast & Furious 6, The Rock has topped Forbes’ list of biggest earners for this year with his films making $1.3 bn this year. That’s cool, since Johnson seems like a pretty chilled and hardworking guy, etc.

Dwayne Johnson, Superstars for Sandy
That is what you would call a $1.3 billion smile.

But what about Robert Downey Jr. or F&F co-stars like Vin Diesel? Surely the man who starred in the highest grossing film of 2013 (Iron Man 3, in case you’ve spent most of this year in a cave with no wi-fi) must be somewhere around the top? That he is, in fact Downey took second place. This maybe because, while Iron Man 3 was a huge success at the box office, it was the actor’s only film this year, while Johnson starred in four, including blockbuster G.I. Joe: Retaliation and of course Fast & Furious 6.

Paul Walker Dead At 40: Hollywood Remembers The Fallen Star

Paul Walker Vin Diesel Dwayne Johnson Ludacris Tyrese Gibson Aaron Paul Idris Elba Neil Patrick Harris

Following the tragic passing of actor Paul Walker earlier this week, there has been an outpouring of emotion from Hollywood on behalf of the 40-year-old actor. A number of celebrities have taken to their social media accounts to send their condolences to Walker's family and pay tribute to the fallen star.

Paul's death has shocked Hollywood, and the rest of the world

Walker and his friend, Roger Rodas, both died in the fiery crash on Saturday, 30 November, after Rodas lost control of his Porsche Carrera GT and crashed it into a light post and a tree. The car burst into flames upon impact and both Walker and Rodas were pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred as the pair were leaving a fundraising event for Walker's charity Reach Out Worldwide, which was aiming to raise money for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan at the time.

Justin Lin To Follow Up 'Fast & Furious' Success With 'Bourne Legacy' Sequel

Justin Lin Jeremy Renner Vin Diesel Dwayne Johnson Paul Walker Matt Damon

Justin Lin has been signed on to direct the next instalment of the Bourne franchise, which will see Jeremy Renner return as the star of the show. Filming for the fifth Bourne film is due to begin next year, with the movie expected to arrive in cinemas in summer 2015.

Lin, who masterminded the Fast and Furious franchise - which has become one of the most successful film series in history - was announced as the director of the next Bourne film via Deadline, who also revealed that Renner will be returning as Aaron Cross. The 2015 release is being written by Invictus and Sherlock Holmes writer, Anthony Peckham.

The fifth Bourne film will be Lin's first project since stepping down as the head of the Fast and Furious franchise - which grossed over $1 billion from the last three films alone - in place of James Wan. Universal have enlisted the help of Lin to hopefully propel the Bourne series to similar heights enjoyed by F&F.

Pain & Gain Review

Good

Spirited and very funny, this movie should actually be rather disturbing since it's a true story about torture and murder. But director Michael Bay is so slick with the action and comedy elements that he lulls audiences to sleep, entertaining us with events that really should send chills down our spines. So the movie feels rather tasteless when you begin to think about it.

Wahlberg stars as Daniel, an obsessive bodybuilder in 1990s Miami who works as a personal trainer at a local gym. But he's becoming increasingly annoyed by the fact that his clients are much wealthier than he is. So he convinces his steroid-addicted colleague Adrian (Mackie) to help him kidnap a customer (Shalhoub) and steal his fortune. Realising that they need some help, they enlist born-again ex-con Paul (Johnson) in their plan. But none of them is very smart, and the kidnapping goes badly wrong from the start. Still, they manage to steal quite a lot before a tenacious private detective (Harris) notices something isn't right.

For a story that deals with such intensely serious themes, this is an oddly broad comedy. Bay never even tries to find dark irony here; he just focusses on how stupid these criminals are, convinced that they are as cool as the characters from their favourite movies and eerily unbothered by the fact that they are inflicting pain and even death on people for their own greedy ends. The actors inhabit the roles with a disarming naivete, so we can't help but laugh at their idiotic actions. Wahlberg plays Daniel as a muscle-head so focussed on getting what he wants that he doesn't notice the carnage in his wake; Mackie at least gives Adrian a sense of self-doubt, plus some comical romance (with scene-stealer Wilson); and Johnson has a tricky role as a religious guy with a weakness for drugs and women.

Snitch Review

Very Good

Dwayne Johnson tries to flex his acting muscles in this smarter-than-usual action movie, based on a true story that gets under our skin. He's never played someone as fragile as this, which is fascinating even if the film ultimately can't resist cranking up the action while turning rather preachy.

Johnson plays John, a construction company owner whose bright 18-year-old son Jason (Gavron) is caught in a drugs sting by an undercover agent (Pepper). Jason is facing 10 years in prison, and offered a way out if he can finger another drug dealer. But he doesn't know any, since he was set up himself. So John makes a deal with a federal prosecutor (Sarandon) to find a big dealer himself. He convinces reluctant ex-con employee Daniel (Bernthal) to work with him, contacting a local dealer (Williams) before going after the kingpin (Bratt). But of course things get increasingly dangerous the deeper they go.

While Johnson's acting chops aren't terribly subtle, he's such a charismatic screen presence that we are fully engaged with him from the start. The tender scenes between him and Gavron add weight to the whole story, while the tetchy connection between him and Bernthal keeps the film on a knife edge. By contrast, Sarandon and Pepper are pretty much just scene-stealing sharks using innocent people to do their dirty work.

Box Office Biggies: After Earth Flounders, While Fast & Furious Dominates

Will Smith Jaden Smith Dwayne Johnson Vin Diesel

The critics definitely aren’t favoring After Earth this week and for ones, movie-goers seem to agree. M. Night Shyamalan’s crack at sci-fi, starring Will and Jaden Smith is hemorrhaging money at this point, with a measly taking of $10 million on Friday (according to The Chicago Tribune) and looking at an unimpressive $25 million in weekend takings. That’s definitely not enough to justify Sony’s $130 million investment in a project, which, it is becoming increasingly obvious, could turn out to be the year’s biggest flop. Of course, this might not be the final curtain for After Earth, but with earnings at less than half what the studio predicted (After Earth was predicted to debut at somewhere between $30 to $40 million) it isn’t looking good for the lackluster sci-fi adventure.

Meanwhile, the unlikely success of Fast & Furious 6 continues. This weekend the Dwayne Johnson flick isn’t quite putting the pedal to the metal like last week, but it’s still going at a steady $40 million on its second week of release. Then again, Fast & Furious definitely has the formula for a summer blockbuster – namely, cars, quips and scantily-clad people – down pat, while After Earth – a Frankenstein-like mix of sci-fi, drama and comedy – struggles to find its audience.

"Fast & Furious 6," will likely stay at No. 1 in its second weekend with an estimated $50 million over three days. Previous "Fast" movies have dropped sharply in their second weekends, but the strong opening for the sixth installment shows that the series may have hit its peak later on in the game.

What Is It About Fast & Furious Six That Makes Us See It Again And Again?

Dwayne Johnson Vin Diesel Paul Walker Ludacris Tyrese Gibson Jordana Brewster

Throughout the surprisingly long life of Fast & Furious, we’ve come to think of the franchise as something of a joke. Macho men and beautiful women revving up engines and performing absurd stunts, with barely a thread of plot to hold the whole thing together. And yet, not only is Fast & Furious still around, but the sixth installment in the series is geared up to take the weekend box office charts by a landslide. The film grossed over $38 million domestically on Friday and is projected to cash in at $120 million by the end of the holiday weekend (according to USA Today) and it miraculously earned the approval of 75% of critics and 95% of fans on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Pardon us while we stop and wonder: how on earth did this happen?

Well, there’s obviously the very enticing presence of both Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel – both of whom look like your stereotypical tough guys, but turn out to be surprisingly relatable and have really good comedic pacing. Then there are of course the members of the supporting cast – Paul Walker, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster – who’s clever and well-timed quips make this highly watchable. Then there are, of course, the machines, the explosions, your typical action flick fodder, which this franchise takes very seriously. But all that just makes for an entertaining, easily forgettable movie, perhaps one sequel. What Fast did and what’s helped the franchise not only live on, but become bigger and better, with the sixth installment being the best yet, where normally a franchise would be on its last leg, was to stop taking itself seriously. Somewhere around Fast Five the producers realized the ridiculousness of the whole premise and, instead of trying to disguise it, decided to just go for the full monty (we presume that’s how it was mentioned in meetings.)

Fast And Furious 6 Is Released Today, And It Might Be The Best One Yet!

Vin Diesel Paul Walker Dwayne Johnson Ludacris

Fast and Furious 6 gets it's U.S. release today and whilst many are scratching their heads at how the franchise ever managed to get to six films, critics and audiences alike are in agreement with each other that the big wigs behind the franchise have left the best film until last (Though there's probably going to be a seventh).

With original stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker joined by the likes of franchise regulars DWAYNE 'THE ROCK' JOHNSON and Ludacris (as Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges), the latest release is still very much a Fast & Furious film, but don't let that put you off just yet. With all the usual motoring chaos and carnage to expect, only this time round with a little added spice, the film is everything you could from a F&F movie, with added va-va-voom.

'He Needs To Grow Up' - Michael Bay Explains Dwayne Johnson's Absence From Pain And Gain Premiere

Dwayne Johnson Michael Bay

Dwayne Johnson had to miss the premiere of his latest movie Pain & Gain because of a hernia operation, E! News reports. The Rock – as he is otherwise known – was notably absent from the red carpet premiere in LA last night (April 24, 2013) but the movie’s director Michael Bay was on hand to explain why.

“Dwayne's hurt tonight," Bay told E! News "He was pushing it too hard. [ He] needs to grow up and stop wrestling 300-pound men." Tough love from Mr Bay, there. Apparently, the 40 year old actor / wrestler had to undergo an emergency hernia operation last night, taking him out of the celebrations for the movie’s release. He’s said to be resting up at home now. Johnson was hardly backwards in coming forwards when it came to sharing the details of his unfortunate wrestling-related problem, as he tweeted on Sunday (April 21, 2103) “Saw my Dr who had to push my intestines back thru the tear in my abdomen. Kinda romantic. Surgery is next week. ‪#BringItOn‬.” Ugh.

It sounds as though the surgery was a success though, as he tweeted on April 23, “Surgery a success! Dr repaired 3 hernial tears (fun pain). Superman is on the mend.. ‪#WeFallWeRise‬,” accompanied by a photo of himself in a hospital bed, wearing a Superman t-shirt and a hair net. Great sartorial combo, there, Dwayne. Pain & Gain also stars Mark Wahlberg and Anthony Mackie.

Dwayne Johnson's Emergency Operation Didn't Harm The Wrestler's Good Spirits

Dwayne Johnson Michael Bay Mark Wahlberg

Everyone breathe easy, Dwayne Johnson is recovering after his hernia surgery. The wrestling star was rushed to hospital on Monday and had an emergency operation, but The Rock isn’t one to mope at all. He suffered three hernial tears while wrestling John Cena earlier this month. The debate over the “realness” of wrestling is still ongoing, but Johnson is living proof that you can get some pretty real injuries doing it.

Because of the emergency, Mr Johnson had to miss the premiere of his latest flick – the pretty aptly titled, given the circumstances, Pain & Gain. The flick co-stars Mark Wahlberg and opens across theatres this Friday. Director Michael Bay chided the wrestler for risking his health with the sport. But it looks like The Rock’s wellbeing is no longer in danger and neither is his good mood, as he tweeted a picture of himself in the hospital, flexing in his Superman T-shirt, accompanied by the caption: "Surgery a success! Dr repaired 3 hernial tears (fun pain). Superman is on the mend.. #WeFallWeRise."

A bit over-confident perhaps, but that’s the recovery spirit none the less. Johnson’s publicist, Alan Nierob, revealed for The Associated press that The Rock is now anchored at home, recovering. We’re sure that with Johnson’s rock solid good spirit, the recovery will be a breeze.

How John Cena Left Dwayne Johnson Needing Grisly Emergency Surgery

Dwayne Johnson John Cena

Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock was unable to make the Los Angeles premiere of his new movie Pain & Gain on Monday, after receiving an emergency operation for three hernial tears. The actor and wrestler is doing fine now after a successful operation, though it's unlikely he will return to the promotional rounds for Michael Bay's movie, also starring Mark Wahlberg.

"Surgery a success! Dr repaired 3 hernial tears (fun pain). Superman is on the mend.. #WeFallWeRise," Johnso tweeted on Tuesday with a photo of himself in a hospital bed, flexing in a Superman T-shirt. His publicist Alan Nierob told the Associated Press that he is now recovering at home.

The injury occurred when Johnson wrestled John Cena at Wrestlemania 29 on April 7, losing his championship title. "In the middle of last night's Wrestlemania match I tore my abdomen & abductor muscles off the bone. Just part of the job," he wrote April 8, adding, "But as we know... It's all about #JustBringIt. WWE Universe, THANK YOU for all the love & well wishes. Means everything to me. #LeaveItAllInTheRing."

Dwayne Johnson Misses 'Pain And Gain' Premiere After Emergency Operation

Dwayne Johnson

The reasons Dwayne Johnson missed the Pain & Gain premiere has been revealed by Michael Bay, who told the crowds in Los Angeles that the wrestler-turned-actor had to go have emergency surgery, after suffering an injury wrestling as The Rock at this year’s Wrestlemania in New Jersey.

"Dwayne's hurt tonight," Bay told E! Online on the red carpet. "He was pushing it too hard. [ He] needs to grow up and stop wrestling 300-pound men." The 40 year-old wrestled in the former World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) between 1996 and 2004 before leaving the business to concentrate fully on his movie career. However he has been back with the WWE part-time since 2011 and most recently fought John Cena at Wrestlemania 29 – a match he lost. The subsequent injury meant he had to duck out of the company’s Raw program the night after, and the severity of the situation became clear as he also missed the Pain & Gain premiere.

"Saw my Dr who had to push my intestines back thru the tear in my abdomen. Kinda romantic," Johnson had tweeted recently. "Surgery is next week. #BringItOn." However he ended up needing the operation to take place somewhat sooner. Given that Pain & Gain focuses on a group of bodybuilders, the star’s been really pushing at the gym of late, perhaps this is his body’s way of telling him to slow down.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Channeled His Inner Superman After Hernia Operation

Dwayne Johnson Michael Bay

After coming out of emergency hernia surgery, actor/wrestling star Dwayne Johnson remained rock solid.

Johnson posted a twitpic of himself in a Superman T-shirt in his hospital bed, accompanied by the following caption: "Surgery a success! Dr repaired 3 hernial tears (fun pain). Superman is on the mend.. #WeFallWeRise."

According to E!News, a rep for The Rock stated that the star is now back home and recovering from the operation on Monday night. Yet more proof that you can’t keep the man down for long. The only consequence was that Johnson reportedly missed the Los Angeles premiere of his new film, Pain & Gain. There’s an appropriate title, if we ever did see one. On the premiere’s red carpet director Michael Bay commented that it may be Johnson’s wrestling exploits that are endangering his health. "He was pushing it too hard," Bay told E! News. "[He] needs to grow up and stop wrestling 300-pound men.”

G.I. Joe: Retaliation Review

Bad

By ignoring everything that made 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra a hugely entertaining guilty pleasure, the all-new writers and director of this sequel have made one of the most abrasively annoying action movies in recent memory. And even worse, they have indulged in exactly the same over-serious idiocy that the first film was gently lampooning. Instead, this is just a bombastic, incoherent, offensive mess.

Since the US President (Pryce) has been replaced by an evil doppelganger from the villainous Cobra organisation, he now sets about destroying his enemies, the elite G.I. Joe force. Led by Duke (Tatum), they're sent to collect some rogue nukes in Pakistan, and everything goes wrong. Now it's up to three off-the-grid Joes - meatlead leader Roadblock (Johnson), shy muscle-boy Flint (Cotrona) and tough-sexy Jaye (Palicki) - to stop Cobra's nefarious plan, whatever that might be. Their key opponents are Cobra goon Firefly (Stevenson) and ninja Storm Shadow (Lee), who's more complex than he looks. And the Joes have secret allies in Asian pals Jinx (Yung) and Snake Eyes (Park), as well as the original Joe himself (Willis).

The main problem here is that producer di Bonaventura forgot that it takes a lot of skill to make a stupid movie that's actually entertaining. Instead, this film is predictable and inane, with action scenes that stretch the limits even of stupid-movie plausibility (such as a ludicrous Spidey-style aerial battle in the Himalayas). And the fist-fights are impossible to see because they are confusingly directed, jarringly edited and then converted into unnecessary 3D. When everything explodes in every single chase scene, it becomes a bit boring really. And while there are gadgets everywhere, none of them are very cool.

Dwayne Johnson On His More Serious Role In Snitch

Dwayne Johnson

Let’s take a look, for one second, at Dwayne Johnson’s career trajectory, shall we? A pro WWE wrestler, known as The Rock, Johnson’s move into films was calculated. He wasn’t in there for an Oscar, he was playing the big-money blockbuster roles.

Somewhere inside there must be a good actor. Actually, we take that back - there’s definitely not. But a good man? We think so, and that’s exactly the kind of character he’s playing in his new film, Snitch, in which he portrays John Matthews, whose teenage son is wrongly accused of a drug distribution crime. “I read this, I loved it. I read it, I was moved. I was compelled by it. I've been fortunate to play some pretty cool characters over the years,” Johnson explained to MTV. “Guys who go out, and they kick ass and they save the world. This guy was a regular guy, a regular family man who wasn't a streetwise guy, not street tough in any way but had the heart of a lion.”

Dwayne Johnson Struggles To Impress In New Role; Snitch Reviews Round-Up

Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson’s return as The Rock to World Wrestling Entertainment hasn’t been met with unanimous praise, with many disgruntled that he’s been made the new WWE Champion even though he’s dividing his time up between wrestling and film making. So you'd better hope that his films are decent at least, right? Well, if the reviews of Snitch are anything to go by, he could be treading water there too.

The premise of the film sees Johnson playing a father whose 18 year-old son is wrongly accused of a drug distribution crime. The fast-paced action thriller sees Johnson join the US Army and work undercover so he can infiltrate a drug ring. Sounds plausible. Anyway, it’s not gone down well with the critics; “Dwayne Johnson tries so hard to be taken seriously in the ponderous and preposterous drama Snitch that it hurts to watch him in much the same way it hurts to watch the weightlifting competition at the summer Olympics” write TIME Magazine, with the Los Angeles Times chipping in “The dialogue is preachy, the drama too earnest and the action kind of sluggish, though it's hard not to get a jolt when Johnson jumps behind the wheel.”

USA Today is a bit pluckier in its assessment though, writing “In its focus on an ordinary family facing a nightmarish scenario, Snitch is a terrifying but relatable story.” The Washington Post says, meanwhile, “Snitch is protein-and-starch filmmaking at its utilitarian -- and belly-filling -- best.” A mixed bag then for the film, which has a 51% average on Rotten Tomatoes, which begs the question – is The Rock spreading himself too thinly?

Fast & Furious 6 Trailer

Dominic, Brian and Mia maybe $100 million richer following their daring heist at the expense of crime lord Hernan Reyes in Rio de Janeiro, but their lives have been left somewhat ruptured by the fact that they cannot return home despite DSS agent Luke Hobbs letting them go after they saved his life. However, they are given a chance to be pardoned in full when Hobbs enlists them and their team to help him take down a group of deadly mercenary drivers with their own formidable street racing skills. Things aren't as simple as that though, especially when Dom discovers that his former love Letty who he believed to be dead makes a return as the brutal and self-serving assistant of the criminal kingpin behind the organisation. Dwayne Johnson Gets Milk In Super Bowl Dairy Commercial

Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson has become the new face of the famous 'Got Milk?' advert after making his dairy debut during the Super Bowl XLVII yesterday (February 3rd 2013).

WWE's Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has never been one to take himself too seriously, having appeared in numerous comedy and kids' flicks over the years (during and between his wrestling ventures), and he has managed to make himself even more lovable and child-friendly in his latest post as the star of the 'Got Milk?' dairy commercial. The ad shows him discovering that there's no milk left in the refrigerator while three young girls with bowls of cereal look on in horror. With a look of pure determination, Johnson runs down the street chasing after the milk truck in his pyjamas. Along the way he is confronted with chaos; a child whose cat is stuck up a tree asks him for help, a group of balaclava clad thieves run from a bank with handfuls of cash and an elderly couple are trapped in a car with an escaped lion on top; however, the usually heroic Dwayne assesses that his milk situation is of utmost importance and manages to retrieve a new bottle and give those kids their breakfast before. erm. punching an alien in the face.

A little random, we'll admit, but our favorite wrestler deserves a good slap on the back for his hilarious performance as usual. It doesn't quite compare to likes of past Super Bowl ads, such as the Apple Macintosh commercial in 1984 which won four awards for its gripping style and 2010's epic 'You're Not You When You're Hungry' Snickers advert featuring Betty White playing football, but it will certainly stick in our minds for a good few weeks.

Beefcake Or Photoshopped? Hugh Jackman Looking Pumped In The Wolverine Movie Still

Hugh Jackman Dwayne Johnson

A brand new still from The Wolverine has been released and Hugh Jackman is looking more pumped than ever. According to the Daily Mail, Jackman had to lose a significant amount of weight when he took on the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, but the Aussie actor has bulked right back up again. You’d be forgiven for thinking that those pectoral musicals had been Photoshopped on, they’re so huge but actually, this wouldn’t be the first time that we’ve seen Jackman looking pumped.

In previous X Men movies, Hugh has had to work out prior to filming, to get his body in shape for the super hero movies but this time – seen in the still in a fit of rage and glowering at something off camera – he’s looking even bigger than ever. The movie, The Wolverine is the latest in a series of X Men films and this will be the seventh time that Jackman has played Wolverine (he’ll make it an eighth in the forthcoming X: Men Days of Future Past.) Jackman reportedly had to eat 6,000 calories a day, consisting of mainly chicken, steak and brown rice and he even sought the advice of professional wrestler and actor DWAYNE 'THE ROCK' JOHNSON on the best way to get into the right shape for the movie.

The Wolverine is scheduled for release in July 2013. In the meantime, Jackman can be seen in Les Miserables, for which he has been nominated for an Oscar.

Pain & Gain Trailer

Daniel Lugo is a former criminal whose passion lies in his love for fitness and bodybuilding. When he is hired at the particularly notorious Sun Gym in Florida - a place where the pressure is on to get as big as possible, and where steroids are for sale in the locker rooms - he finds enjoyment there initially before deciding that his low wage wasn't worth it and sets out to organise a criminal method of gaining fortune and fame. He teams up with part-time gym worker Adrian Doorbal and another bodybuilder and former criminal Paul Doyle to set up a plan of extortion and kidnapping against another man, Victor Kershaw, who also has a criminal past. Despite Daniel promising Paul that there would be no-one harmed in their plot to take ownership of all Kershaw's assets, things get out of hand, people end up murdered and they find themselves on the run from the police led by detective Ed Du Bois.

'Pain & Gain' is an action comedy directed by Michael Bay ('Bad Boys', 'Pearl Harbor', 'Transformers') and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely ('The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'). It is based on a set of Miami New Times articles written by investigative journalist Pete Collins in 1999 about the real Daniel Lugo and Adrian Doorbal from the Sun Gym Gang who both received death sentences for their crimes. It is due to be released in the UK on May 3rd 2013.

'Pain And Gain' Trailer Released: Preview Of Michael Bay Movie Hits The Web

Michael Bay Mark Wahlberg Dwayne Johnson Anthony Mackie Christopher Markus Stephen McFeely Ed Harris Rebel Wilson

Michael Bay’s going back to what he does best with his latest movie Pain & Gain. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson (‘The Rock’) and Anthony Mackie, the movie finds the director finally unleashed from the world of Transformers and back into a world of action movies and dark humour.

Pain and Gain tells the tale of a ‘gym rat’ who finds himself discontented with his life and plots to steal from a corrupt businessman, with the help of two fellow weight-lifting buddies. The trailer looks pretty neat, a fine blend of action and a sharp comic strip. Oh and Mark Wahlberg, looking distinctly beefy in his role as Daniel Lugo, the frustrated fitness freak. Pain & Gain is based on the story of the Sun Gym Gang - three guys who “robbed and extorted their way around southern Florida in the mid-90s", according to Empire online and the script appears to have been deftly handles by the Chronicles Of Narnia’s Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The story was originally reported on by the Miami New Times journalist Pete Collins, back in 1999. Now, their tale gets the big budget Hollywood treatment, courtesy of Bay.

Also starring Ed Harris and Rebel Wilson, the movie is scheduled for release in April 2013 in the US and May 2013 in the UK. Prepare yourselves for a great deal of hype between now and then!

Snitch Trailer

When a young man named Jason accidentally and unwittingly gets caught up in drug dealing with a gang, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of up to 10 years after being wrongly arrested for the crime. His father is a strong believer of his innocence and will do everything in his power to have his son let off. He visits a lawyer who says that he can be granted his liberty if he acts as an informant in the gang and help the police make arrests. However, Jason is too frightened after his ordeal and his father asks instead if he can be the one to go undercover. He does so and uses his construction business to find a manual labourer who may have contacts to the criminal world and be able to offer him an introduction. With the offer of help, he is soon ranked highly in the mob which increases his chances of collecting information, but puts his own life and the lives of his wife and young child at immense risk. Just how far will he go to protect his son from wrongful imprisonment?

'Snitch' is based on the PBS Frontline documentary of the same name which details the increase in the use of informants to reduce prison sentences. It has been directed by Ric Roman Waugh ('In the Shadows', 'Felon') who co-wrote it with Justin Haythe ('The Clearing', 'Revolutionary Road') and is set for release on February 22nd 2013.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Review

Good
With just one character from the 2008 adventure, this film does a decent job continuing the story while playing loosely with another Jules Verne's story.

It's an enjoyably ridiculous romp with far-fetched action for the kids and a few deranged gags for the grown-ups.

Now 17, Sean (Hutcherson) has intercepted a broadcast from his Vernian adventurer grandfather (Caine). He begrudgingly lets his stepdad Hank (Johnson) help decode the message, which says that Verne's Mysterious Island really exists, and that it's the same island from Stevenson's Treasure Island and Swift's Gulliver's Travels. Sean is determined to see it, so Hank accompanies him to Palau, where they rent a helicopter piloted by the goofy Gabato (Guzman) and his hot daughter Kailani (Hudgens). But after they find the amazing island, they discover that it's about to sink.

The Other Guys Review

Excellent
A sharp script sets this fast and furious action comedy apart from other brainless summer movies. And it's played with such deadpan precision that it keeps us laughing from start to finish, even when things get bogged down by the plot.

New York cops Gamble and Hoitz (Ferrell and Wahlberg) have been relegated to unimportant positions by two teams of flashier detectives (Jackson/Johnson and Wayans/Riggle). But when Gamble arrests a millionaire investor (Coogan) for a minor infraction, he and Hoitz are plunged into a murky case involving a ruthless Aussie goon (Stevenson) and bribed city officials. Even their captain (Keaton) tells them to leave it alone, but Gamble can't let go and Hoitz sees this as a chance to stop being the "other guys".

The Scorpion King Review

Terrible
The Rock: One name symbolizes everything that can be defined as the stereotypical American male. Why? He's a gruff, tough-as-nails, merciless, and sexually magnetic savior of the free world. And he's huge on TV. And sure enough, The Scorpion King - the latest installment in the mind-numbing, insanely profitable Mummy series - is pure trash. Starring the aforementioned WWF superstar, The Scorpion King is filmmaking at its worst.

The Scorpion King ably rehashes the plots of the variety of other, better films including Gladiator, the Indiana Jones series, Flash Gordon, Beastmaster, and even The Goonies. Set 5,000 years ago, a warlord named Memnon (Steven Brand), acting on crazed Napoleonic urges, ravages the land and bends its people into totalitarian rule. With the aid of a seer who foretells the future, Memnon stands invincible against all aggressors.

The Mummy Returns Review

Bad

Remember how badly "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" turned out when Steven Spielberg tried to wedge an impish kid into his successful archeology-action-adventure formula? Well, deja vu.

How pathetically contrived and sadly unoriginal is the obviously rushed-into-production "The Mummy Returns"? Everything you need to know can be gleaned from these three facts: 1) Prim-but-sexy Egyptologist Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) turns out to be the reincarnation of Queen Nefertiti. 2) Lantern-jawed adventurer Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) finds out that a tattoo he bears means he was born to be a Medjai warrior. And, 3) their ragamuffin 8-year-old son Alex (Freddie Boath) is "The Chosen One" -- although the movie makes little attempt to explain what that means.

All together now: Oh, brother!

The Rock claims that the role has opened his eyes to homosexuality in the movie business, thinking that it should no longer be held against the career of a Hollywood star. In an interview with gay magazine, 'OUT', saying: "I know a lot of gay actors in Hollywood who don't want to come out, and whatever the reasons are I respect that. But I think if people love you now, and if you came out, they would love you more, and if they didn't, then they weren't real people to begin with."
