Rap star Dr Dre's attacker at an award show last year (04) has been told he will stand trial on an assault charge.

JIMMY JAMES JOHNSON, 26, allegedly punched the former NWA producer after he refused to sign an autograph at last year's (15NOV04) Vibe Awards in Santa Monica, California.

The attack set off a brawl with G-Unit rapper Young Buck allegedly stabbing Johnson in retribution - Buck faces a possible eight-year jail term if he's convicted of the offence later this month (MAY05).

Dre, whose given name is ANDRE YOUNG, was about to receive a lifetime achievement award when he was punched.

A trial start date has yet to be announced.
