Jarhead Review

Excellent
From the quiet perch of the homeland, Operation Desert Storm was an anti-climactic blowout. Billed by Saddam Hussein as the "Mother of All Battles," it looked an awful lot like a rout by American air power followed by a hasty Iraqi retreat from Kuwait.

The experience of Marines on the ground, however, bore little resemblance to the precision bombing the public saw on CNN. For the men of the Corps, life in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait consisted of disgust, boredom, foreboding, anxiety, and blinding fear, a toxic combination that made for one of the best reads of 2004, Anthony Swofford's memoir Jarhead.

Hush (1998) Review

Terrible
Oh. My. God. How awful can a movie be? This awful. The film (plot: Crazy, obsessive mother wants to keep son close so she drugs his wife) is successful in one account: Making Jessica Lange look freakishly scary. Note to producers: That ain't exactly hard. Hush is so bad that I fell asleep twice. Nothing worse than having to rewind to rewatch junk like this.

The Craft Review

Weak
A coven of outcast, teenage witches wreaks havoc at a high school.

Rarely have I been able to totally boil down the plot of a film so succinctly, but with The Craft, it's a piece of cake. What, no intricate subplots, you ask? No involved character development? No story progression from one act to the next?

Gladiator Review

Good
"Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?" Hey, who doesn't!?

The awe-inspiring trailers for Gladiator may have you dreaming of Spartacus and Ben-Hur, but you may be surprised to find this film in reality a less palatable mélange of Braveheart and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. This isn't altogether a bad thing, but those expecting a new Roman epic that will stand the test of time (like Spartacus and Ben-Hur) are in for some surprises.

Hollow Man Review

Good
Okay, Kevin Bacon! You're invisible and you can't go back to being visible -- what do you do!?

Well, you spy on some naked chicks, right? That's what I'd do! That's what every guy would do, right!

Girl, Interrupted Review

Good
As near as I can tell, the 60s were about being crazy. Whether it was being crazy while fighting communists in Vietnam, or being crazy while burning bras, or being crazy while marching on Washington, the 60s resounded with insanity. So what better way to tell the story of the 60s than from within the walls of a mental ward known as Claymoore? Hence is the promise given to us in the ads of Girl, Interrupted.

The reality is a bit different.

Win A Date With Tad Hamilton! Review

Extraordinary
Editor's Note: It is the policy of this website to never bestow more than three stars on any film with the word "Tad" in the title, but in the spirit of experimentation, we present this review from a smitten Pete Croatto anyway.

I always groan when I read articles in movie magazines and websites touting some nubile, perky, twentysomething starlet as "the next big thing." Typically, I'm a little hesitant to believe that, because all the designation usually means is that said actress will launch millions of erections. It also gives the false impression that Kirsten Dunst, Natalie Portman, and Reese Witherspoon are all vying for the female lead in The Gin Game.
