The Bourne Legacy Review

Good
Writer Gilroy adds directing to his Bourne chores, shifting the franchise into a cerebral thriller punctuated by plodding action sequences. It's watchable, but doesn't have enough sense of character or purpose to make us care about anything that happens.

Genetically altered government agent Aaron Cross (Renner) is part of Outcome, a parallel programme to Treadstone, which created Jason Bourne. Since Bourne's antics have lifted the lid on Treadstone, Outcome director Eric (Norton) decides to terminate his programme by brutally killing everyone involved. But Aaron slips through the net, as does geneticist Marta (Weisz), whom Aaron needs for the meds that keep him going. As Eric's team hunts them down, they head to Manila to find a solution.

Dark Horse Review

Very Good
Solondz takes another hilariously pitch-black exploration of human behaviour with a film populated by excellent actors playing seriously messed-up characters. And it can't help but force us to look at how we interact with people around us.

Even though he's essentially a pampered slacker, Abe (Gelber) exudes confidence, relentlessly going after the depressed Miranda (Blair) despite her hesitance. Living in the shadow of his successful doctor brother (Bartha), Abe works for his father (Walken), but does virtually nothing and resents the fact that his hard-working cousin (Booth) gets the credit. But then Abe feels hard-done by everyone he encounters, creating an arch-rival in Miranda's ex (Mandvi). But at no point does Abe's inner life come close to the reality around him.

Tangled Review

Very Good
Disney returns to a successful formula for this enjoyable animated romp based on a Grimm fairy tale. It's bright and funny, but not too snappy, and skips the pop-culture references for a more timeless approach.

On the eve of her 18th birthday, Rapunzel (Moore) senses that there's more to life than the tower where she has always lived with her mother Gothel (Murphy).

Indeed, Gothel kidnapped her as an infant from her parents, the King and Queen, because her hair has rejuvenating properties that keeps Gothel forever young.

Tangled Trailer

Everyone knows the story of Rapunzel, even our favourite green ogre, Shrek, has heard of the fair maiden. Tangled takes a new look at what really happened to the young girl with flowing locks of blonde hair. Princess Rapunzel lives in a tower - where she's been locked away for years by an evil woman wishing to harness the youth generating power Rapunzel's hair produces - and the truth behind her escape has never been told; what actually happened is the princess accidently takes a bandit by the name of Flynn Rider hostage! Rapunzel steals Flynn's satchel (containing lots of precious yet stolen items) and she tells him that she will return his loot if he helps her escape.

Spider-Man 2 Review

Good
What better way to celebrate the 4th of July than by spending a good two hours with America's favorite super hero, Spider-Man?

Tobey Maguire returns to the massively popular Spider-Man franchise after a two-year hiatus. And in case you forgot what happened in the summer of 2002, director Sam Raimi is happy to synopsize it for us in the first 40 minutes of this sequel. Poor Peter Parker can't win: He didn't get the girl (Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane), his beloved uncle is dead, Aunt May is about to lose her house, and he's failing out of college because he doesn't have time to study - he's too busy chasing down street thugs in his spidey suit.

The Astronaut's Wife Review

Terrible
A few days ago I saw The Sixth Sense. I thought the problem with that movie was that it lost most of my interest before the movie got interesting. In The Astronaut's Wife, the new, excruciating thriller from New Line, it never got interesting. What it did was steal from other movies. The basic concept smells like Species, and they even stole that "glass slowly falling from the hand of the person and shattering on the floor shot" from The Usual Suspects.

Johnny Depp stars as Spencer Armacost, an astronaut who loses communication with NASA while fixing a satellite. Upon his return, strange occurrences begin with Spencer's partner, who was up there with him, and his partner's wife. This, of course, starts up the paranoia with Spencer's wife Jillian (Charlize Theron).

The Door In The Floor Review

Good

Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger give a pair of extraordinary performances in "The Door in the Floor" as a couple whose souls and whose marriage have never recovered from the deaths of their teenage sons six years before.

Their lives are like broken teacups glued back together -- they may look undamaged from a distance, but up close it's clear they're now made up of psychological shatters and shards that can never be the same again.

Not that they haven't tried to move forward. Hoping to retard their overwhelming sense of loss, they even had a daughter -- played by 6-year-old Elle Fanning, the not-quite-as-natural little sister of uber-talented 8-year-old Dakota ("Man On Fire") -- who seems to subconsciously understand her function in the family.

Spider-Man 2 Review

Very Good

Here's why Toby Maguire's Spider-Man is the greatest superhero in movie history:

Maguire so completely embodies the character's unique yinand yang -- the joyous, daredevil confidence of Spidey and the sweet, self-doubtingyoung chump that is Peter Parker -- that the exhilarating action in "Spider-Man2" is less interesting than his inner turmoil at being torn betweendoing what he's compelled to do and having the life he wants.

Center Stage Review

Good

In a brilliant stroke of summer event movie counter-programming, TriStar Pictures is opening this weekend a surprisingly satisfying sleeper called "Center Stage" -- about the competitive world of a prestigious ballet academy -- that teenage girls are going to gobble up like so much candy.

Turned away from sold-out blockbusters, they'll drag their dates into this "Fame"-lite crowd-pleaser revolving around ballet students dancing their hearts out for a place in the fictitious American Ballet Company. They'll love the pretty, ingenuous heroine (Amanda Shull) learning to believe in herself and her ability. They'll love the two handsome dancers that vie for her heart. They'll love the spectacular, toe-tapping and beautifully staged production numbers. They'll leave the theater smiling dreamily and make a beeline for the Danskin store.

And although they'll never let it show, the guys will like it, too.
