TRAFFIC star Don Cheadle will receive the coveted Gotham Actor Award from the INDEPENDENT FILM PROJECT (IFP) for his body of celebrated movies.

Cheadle, 39, has earned the honour at December's (04) GOTHAM AWARDS in Manhattan, New York, for his versatility moving from independent films like THE RAT PACK and Boogie Nights and big blockbusters such as TRAFFIC and SWORDFISH.

IFP President MICHELLE BYRD explains, "Don was such an obvious choice. He's someone who very seamlessly goes between smaller independent productions to larger commercial movies. He's a consummate actor's actor."

Other winners at the ceremony include director Michel Gondry's Eternal SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, which will receive the organisation's inaugural Celebrate New York Tribute for being produced, filmed and distributed in the city.
