The versatile actor will be appearing an episode penned by his ex-'League of Gentlemen' colleague Mark Gatiss.
The 45 year old actor will appear alongside the current timelord Peter Capaldi and his assistant Jenna Coleman. Shearsmith gave a reaction to the news by saying: “I am absolutely thrilled to be filming ‘Doctor Who’ as Mark Gatiss has written a fantastic role for me in a very scary episode. It has been so exciting to be part of a very singular episode – which, I can say with authority will be unlike any previous episode of ‘Doctor Who’.”
Reece Shearsmith will be making a guest appearance in the next series of 'Doctor Who'
The Hull-born actor has been involved with 'Doctor Who' before, but only as part of a docudrama about the BBC show. “It’s a joy to play a part in the show – certainly a badge of honour,” he continued.
Other guest stars set for the ninth series of the revived sci-fi series include Rufus Hound, Michelle Gomez, Rebecca Front, Ingrid Oliver and ‘Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams.
Alongside Shearsmith in his particular episode will also be Elaine Tan (‘EastEnders’), Bethany Black (Channel 4’s ‘Cucumber’ and ‘Banana’) and Paul Courtenay Hyu (‘Coronation Street’).
The brand new series starts on BBC One on September 19th, and the episode concerned has been written by Shearsmith’s former ‘League of Gentlemen’ colleague and current ‘Sherlock’ cast member Mark Gatiss. He reacted to the news with a statement of his own.
“I’m delighted to be writing again for Peter and Jenna’s brilliant Tardis team and very excited about this particular story,” he said. “It’s been brewing in the dark recesses of my mind for a while now! I’m also chuffed to bits to finally welcome my old friend Reece Shearsmith onto the show. He’s been badgering me for 10 years!”
