Sylvester McCoy Rubbishes Suggestion That 'Doctor Who' Can Be Played By A Woman

Sylvester McCoy Doctor Who Steven Moffat Karen Gillan Paul McGann

Former ‘Doctor Who’ actor Sylvester McCoy has dismissed the idea that the time-travelling hero could be played by a woman, and that he’s “not convinced by the cultural need” for the role to be re-cast in such a way.

The 71 year old actor, who played the seventh incarnation of the Time Lord between 1987 and 1989, finished his stint in the role in the 1996 movie in which he was replaced by Paul McGann, believes that giving the lead role to a female would upset the chemistry in the scripts.

Doctor Who Steven Moffat Peter Capaldi

The show's producer Steven Moffat revealed earlier this year that the series would definitely continue for five more years, but it seems other people are much more confident than that. After BBC drama boss Ben Stephenson suggested it could go on another 50 years, former Doctor Peter Davison took it one step further insisting to BANG Showbiz that he thinks 'it will go on fairly indefinitely' as long as the fans stay devoted and the producers stay committed. We think he's got a point and have come up with seven top reasons why the Timelord will continue to travel through time.

The tension between the Doctor and Clara has been at a peak since, well, since he regenerated from the happy-go-lucky Matt Smith facade to the grumpy and sour-tempered image of Peter Capaldi. But Saturday's episode (October 18th 2014), marked a turning point as Clara was forced to think like a Timelord when they landed in a particularly dangerous situation in Bristol. Together, however, they resolved the 21st Century Doctor's darkest regret and saved his planet Gallifrey from total destruction.

Missing 'Doctor Who' Episodes Found In Nigerian Archive

Doctor Who Matt Smith David Tennant Peter Capaldi

Nine missing Doctor Who episodes have been discovered in Nigeria. During the 1960s and 1970s the BBC destroyed, rather short-sightedly, many of the original transmission tapes of the cult sci-fi series. Fortunately, copies were often shipped out to foreign broadcasters and eleven of these episodes (9 missing ones) have been uncovered in the Nigerian city of Jos.

The episodes discovered originated from the reign of the second Doctor Peter Troughton, who appeared in the role from 1966-69. Troughton's assistant, played by Deborah Watling, has also expressed her joy in the discovery of the tapes as only one storyline from her time in the Tardis remains in the BBC archives.

Ben Daniels is the latest name to become the favourite to inherit the role of Doctor Who in the long-running BBC series. Very soon there'll be very few British male actors who haven't been rumoured to be taking over the controls to the TARDIS as the Merlin actor now has the most favourable odds at 6/1. With previous odds of 16/1, Chiwetel Ejiofor (Salt, American Gangster) now closely follows Daniels at 7/1.

However, chances are the new Who may not be a male actor at all; there have been calls for the new Doctor to be female, which would mark a first for the series which has run since 1963.

Emeli Sande has been awarded an honorary Doctor of the University degree by the University of Glasgow. The singer received the prestigious honour for her outstanding contribution to the music industry, reports BBC News.

Professor John Briggs, Clerk of Senate and Vice-Principal of the University of Glasgow, said: “The University of Glasgow is very pleased to recognise Emeli Sande's huge contribution to music, both in the Uk and around the world, by awarding her an honorary degree.”

It’s been a ridiculously successful year for Sande, who performed at both the opening and closing ceremonies at the London Olympics. It spent 66 consecutive weeks in the Top 10, finally dropping out on May 26, 2013.

Warring Star Wars And Dr Who Fans Broken Up By Police At Norwich Sci-Fi Convention

Star Wars Doctor Who

In a scene not dissimilar to the movie Fanboys, a group of Star Wars and Dr Who fans were involved in a brawl outside a sci-fi convention in Norwich (which as we all know is a hotbed for loutish behaviour) at the weekend. The conflict got so heated that police were forced to intervene and break up the dispute.
The scene became weird after members of the Norwich Sci Fi Club were refused entry to an event being held by the Norwich Star Wars Club. More than a dozen fans from both the Star Wars and Dr Who clan were caught up in the punch-up, including several that were in fancy dress, outside the venue at the University of East Anglia shortly after 2.30pm on Sunday (May 12). It is unknown why this story didn't become widespread until now.
The hilariously bizarre series of events were triggered when Jim Poole, treasurer of Norwich Sci Fi Club, was asked to leave the convention when he approached Doctor Who actor Graham Cole for an autograph. Poole was then involved in a stand-off with the event organiser Richard Walker, 63, with the two eventually taking their dispute outside, where they were joined by others. The row intensified and got violent and was only brought to an end when police and university security officers were called to defuse the situation.
When questioned by police, both sides admitted that there had been a long-running rivalry between the groups and the events they organise. The two groups were spoken to individually by police and told to keep out of each others way in future. In spite of the events, Mr Walker hailed it as "a very successful day," promising, "we will be back next year with an even bigger and better fair."

Going Back In Time! The 'Doctor Who' Characters We'd Love To Make 50th Anniversary Comebacks

Doctor Who Matt Smith David Tennant Christopher Eccleston Billie Piper Catherine Tate Elisabeth Sladen John Barrowman Tom Baker Sylvester McCoy

The upcoming 50th anniversary of legendary British sci-fi series 'Doctor Who' has sent a flurry of fervent excitement through fans everywhere who are now spending every waking hour wondering what producers could possibly have dreamt up for this milestone celebration. Rumours have been flying around everywhere suggesting jaw dropping twists and major reunions (some of which are frankly impossible) and it is true to say that everyone is hoping for it to be their favourite 'Doctor Who' story ever.

There are, at least, some definite confirmations about what we can expect for the upcoming anniversary show. On November 23rd 2013 (that's precisely 50 years on from the airing of the first ever episode 'An Unearthly Child') a special 3D show will be aired on BBC HD and in cinemas. It's a rather apt way of celebrating 50 years; by using our own technological advances on a show full of gadgetry. Lead writer Steven Moffat told the Guardian: 'Technology has finally caught up with 'Doctor Who' and your television is now bigger on the inside' - making a reference, of course, to the Doctor's TARDIS; a police box spaceship that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

A New Dimension: 50th Anniversary Doctor Who Will Be 3D

Doctor Who

Doctor Who really will be venturing into new dimensions to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The BBC reports that Steve Moffat, the lead writer and executive producer on the show, revealed that the anniversary edition of the show will be shown in 3D, using some of the show’s 3D capacity, as a special treat for fans of Doctor Who. “It's about time,” said Moffat. “Technology has finally caught up with Doctor Who, and your television is now bigger on the inside. A whole new dimension of adventure for the Doctor to explore.”

This isn’t the first time that Doctor Who has been shown in 3D, though. Back in 1993, the 30th anniversary was also marked with a 3D treatment, for a Children In Need special filmed in the EastEnders set. The Doctor Who announcement came as part of wider plans announced by the BBC, regarding its latest series of drama commissions. Also reported was the news that Call the Midwife will return in 2014 and a new 13-part drama series entitled Atlantis will take the slot previously occupied by Merlin.

The BBC’s controller of drama, Ben Stephenson, said that he aims to make the BBC “more British than ever” and would be “applying the Danny Boyle vision” to the broadcasting network’s output. He’s referring, of course, to the work that Boyle did on the Olympic opening ceremony and Stephenson has translated that as “a bold, adventurous, authorial approach that exports because of its Britishness not despite it.”

BBC Following Netflix? Set To Premier Shows On IPlayer Before TV

Doctor Who

While television is increasingly moving its accessibility to the internet and on demand services, the BBC is following suit and has plans to begin premièring select shows via their on demand service iPlayer.

Netflix has become the first platform to commission a fully funded series to go straight to their on demand service. 13 episodes of House of Cards became available instantly on Netflix last week. Now, as the BBC reports, they have plans to follow suit by trialling 40 hours of programming over the next 12 months to go directly online. The BBC has released a few things only online before, but they have been pilots and much smaller spin off shows, such as Dr Who spin off 'Pond Life'.

These plans come after it was reported that 2012 had record highs of iPlayer requests, making it the most used on demand service in the UK. With 2.32 billion requests for shows over the year you can see why. Highest requests came from the Olympics and Jeremy Clarkson's car magazine show, Top Gear, with specific day highs coming in the days following the Christmas and New Year scheduling. Although iPlayer views account for only an estimated 2% of overall BBC views, with iPlayer's numbers consistently on the rise, it certainly makes sense investing in the trial as broadcasting evolves.
