Diane Sawyer Rumors: Is She Considering Retirement In 2013?

Diane Sawyer Donald Trump

Diane Sawyer rumors have been swirling for weeks, with the New York Daily News quoting a "source" close to the anchor of ABC World News as saying she would be calling it a day in 2013. "She has discussed with a few close friends and some people at ABC that she is seriously considering retiring," said the insider.

Sawyer has reportedly discussed the matter with a few close friends and some of the head honchos at ABC and is said to be "seriously considering retiring." The rumors may be linked to Sawyer's caring of her ill mother. "No one wants to see her going through a rough time. She's the nicest woman. If it's a co-worker's birthday, she'll throw a party. Anything to show everyone a good time," said the source. The veteran anchor - who previously helmed ABC's Good Morning America - is perhaps best known for her interview with Donald Trump's ex-wife Marla Maples, asking her "Was it really the best sex you ever had?" Sawyer has also sat down with the likes of Fidel Castro, Saddam Hussein, Whitney Houston, President Obama and shooting victim Gabby Gifford. Her apparent slurring during her recent Election Night coverage prompted the launch of a mock Twitter account, Drunk Diane Sawyer.

A representative for ABC denies Sawyer's retirement, saying, "That's a bunch of nonsense as we made clear and Diane's plans for 2013 haven't changed in any way."

Diane Sawyer Drunk On Air? Don't Make Us Laugh!

Diane Sawyer

Rumours spread around the web last night that Diane Sawyer appeared drunk on air after she seemed to be slurring, however sources at the Daily Mail have said that these rumours were met with "'a lot of laughter" at the office, her colleagues clearly considering the notion utterly ridiculous.

Sawyer was working all night on the election polls and results as they poured in from around the country. Through some of the night viewers thought she was slurring and leaning on her arms to prop her up, sparking rumours that she was drunk or on drugs, sparking a new trending topic on Twitter of "Diane Sawyer Drunk". However, the morning after the night before, as the issue can be probed, reveals that Sawyer was merely suffering from extreme exhaustion.

A source told the Daily Mail that 'Diane's been up for days and she's had many sleepless nights. She was covering the hurricane and then preparing for the election broadcast," they said. "If you knew Diane you'd realise she's one of the hardest working people on television... She likes to cram things in, she likes to have every fact at her finger tips."

Was Diane Sawyer Drunk On ABC Election Coverage? Most Of Twitter Thinks So

Diane Sawyer They Might Be Giants

Was Diane Sawyer drunk during ABC News’ election coverage last night (November 6, 2012)?

A whole bunch of Twitter users seemed to think so and one smart Alec even set up a fictional ‘Drunk Diane Sawyer’ Twitter account, to post a series of fictional messages supposedly from the newsreader.

During last night’s election coverage, Sawyer could be heard slurring her words and rambled through her sentences, often making mistakes and stumbling over words, whilst her intonation was a little on the wild side. Many people commenting on Twitter assumed that Sawyer was drunk. @AlbieManzo posted a message that read “Diane Sawyer is waaaaaaassted right now!!!” whilst the official Twitter page for the band They Might Be Giants posted a message that said “And Diane Sawyer declares tonight's winner is... chardonnay!” And meanwhile, John Gruber said “Everyone, let's switch to ABC. I think Diane Sawyer is drunk.” A pal of Diane Sawyer’s however, refuted the claims and put her behavior down to exhaustion, telling the New York Daily News “She spent a number of sleepless nights preparing and rehearsing… It just caught up to her.” ABC’s officials have declined to comment.

Diane Sawyer Election Coverage Attracts Unwanted Attention

Diane Sawyer

Among the many talking points during last night’s election coverage in the US was the performance ABC news co-anchor Diane Sawyer, who seemed to be getting into the celebratory spirit before the winner had actually been announced between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Sawyer is normally known for her straight-news-delivering style, which is extremely well practiced.

However, whether it was simply the long day, her over excitement, or maybe a bit of the cheeky stuff before the winner had got round to popping his own champagne, something was markedly different about her last night (November 6, 2012) as she propped herself up on her arms at the anchor desk and spoke more slowly than usual. "OK," The Huffington Post reported her saying at one point, "I wanna – can we have our music, because this is another big one here? Minnesota, we're ready to project Minnesota, rrright now. ... Well, tonight we know that President Barack has won Minnesota," she slurred.

Co-anchor George Stephanopoulos didn’t seem to notice too much, but Twitter did and she was soon trending on the website. "A bit tipsy," "hammered" or "on pain killers, muscle relaxers, benzos or some combination" were given as reasons by Tweeters for her apparent state, with one quipping after Mitt Romney lost "Bad night for Romney … Worse night for Diane Sawyer?"

On The Road To Recovery: Robin Roberts Doing Well After Surgery

Robin Roberts Diane Sawyer Sam Champion Good Morning America

Robin Roberts has begun her journey down the road to recovery after going under the knife following her bone marrow transplant on Thursday (September 20, 2012). The whole procedure lasted a mere five minutes and was caught on film for Good Morning America, with her co-anchor Diane Sawyer and weatherman Sam Champion on hand to watch and give support. Champion said after the procedure, "I don't think I will ever forget the power and love that was in that room.”

Roberts' procedure saw her being injected slowly with millions of stem cells harvested from her sister, Sally-Ann, in order to treat her MDS, a rare blood disorder Roberts has had since birth. Family and friends, as well as co-workers surrounded her as the procedure was undertaken, with the song Ain’t No Mountain High Enough and some of her other favourites being played as the operation took place.

The co-anchor’s oncologist, Dr. Gail Roboz, said on Good Morning America earlier today that the next 7-10 days will be crucial for Roberts as they watch to see the stem cells "find a home." Roboz said that she is in an "in between zone" at the time being, whilst the blood will be checked several times a day to look for the white blood cell count to rise.
