The Last American Virgin Review

Good
Ridiculous yet irrepressibly fun, The Last American Virgin rivals Porky's as perhaps the raunchiest sex comedy of the '80s. Each scene careens from one teen copulation -- aborted or completed -- to another, with only the barest of plots to connect them all. It's uttelry absurd, and yet it has one of the best soundtracks ever put to film. Trust me!

Amityville II: The Possession Review

Bad
At least Amityville II: The Possession has some basis in fact. This is -- on the surface -- the story of how the DeFeo family (here the Montellis) got murdered one night at 112 Ocean Avenue on Long Island, New York. (The subsequent events are the subject of the original Amityville Horror.)

In real life, the eldest son of the DeFeo family murdered six of his family members in their sleep while they slumbered in their beds. In Amityville II, the family structure is about the same -- and they all get the business -- but little else remains intact. Here we have a tale about a rough and tumble kid named Sonny (Jack Magner), who hates his father, romances his sister (Diane Franklin, best known as Better Off Dead's Monique), and gets possessed by demons who live in a secret room in the basement.

Better Off Dead Review

Excellent
Did kids in 1985 "get" Better Off Dead? John Cusack wouldn't become a teen idol until 1989's Say Anything..., and here his combination loser/geek/skiing stud might come off as hard to relate to.

I don't know, I still love this movie, with its bizarre tangents/dream sequences, such as when Cusack's Lane crafts an animatronic, Van Halen-rocking hamburger during his part-time job. What's that got to do with anything? Well, nothing at all. In fact, all the skiing, talking cartoons, and odd meals ("Frahnch fries...") distract from Lane's frequent suicide attempts, upset over the loss of his girlfriend (Amanda Wyss). The film could have been a lot more disturbing -- but of course Lane never quite manages to off himself, and he doesn't get the girl back either; he trades up to the foreign exchange student across the street.
