Depeche Mode's US tour is under threat of cancellation after lead singer Dave Gahan came down with laryngitis. The band had to ditch their Thursday (11MAY06) gig in Chicago after a doctor warned the frontman he needed to rest his voice. Gahan first realised something was wrong during a Wednesday night (10MAY06) concert in Kansas City where he struggled to remember lyrics and looked increasingly uncomfortable on stage. Bandmember MARTIN GORE took over for two songs, telling the crowd they were experiencing "technical difficulties" until the concert was cut short fifty minutes into the set. Depeche Mode's road manager told the audience, "We are unable to continue because we have lost our man in the middle." A fan says, "There was some consolation having Martin come out. But I wish he could have done more."
