Denzel Washington, the ACADEMY AWARD winning actor, is set to host the 17th annual Nobel Peace Prize Concert on December 11th 2010, reports USA Today. The event will be held in Oslo, Norway, and will feature performances from the likes of Elvis Costello and Herbie Hancock.
The Nobel laureate will be announced on October 8th and will then be honoured at the concert the following month. Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith were hosts of last year's event, which celebrated the work of Barack Obama who was the recipient of the 2009 prize. 55-year-old Washington said in a statement, "I am honored to attend the Nobel Peace Prize Concert this year and participate in this historic and momentous event to help spread the message of global peace". Geir Lundestad, the secretary for the Norwegian Nobel Committee was thrilled that the actor had agreed to host the concert, saying, "He is the perfect ambassador for this event".
The Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo is the favourite to win this year's prize, according to Yahoo News. The poet and professor is currently serving an 11-year jail term for signing a manifesto calling for democratic reform in China.
