Pop singer Delta Goodrem opened the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia today (15MAR06), wearing $1.5 million (GBP883,000) in diamonds. The BORN TO TRY hitmaker performed her new song TOGETHER WE ARE ONE at the climax of the opening ceremony in Melbourne's McG arena. Goodrem wrote the song with her Irish pop star boyfriend Brian McFadden. She enthuses, "I am an adopted Melbournian so I'm just so proud. I wanted to give something back to a city I absolutely love. It feels like home to me. "Having been involved in the opening ceremony, I've seen a slice of what it takes to put an event like this on - from the people backstage, to volunteers, staff, officials and, of course, the athletes. "I wanted to write a tribute to all those people, to say after all the toil, and the blood, sweat and tears, the time has finally arrived for them to be rewarded. We're all united by this moment." New Zealand soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa also performed at the ceremony.
