Deftones Frontman Forms New Supergroup

Deftones Bad Brains

Moreno has a new gig as the lead vocalist of Saudade, which also includes Bad Brains' Dr. Know and MACkie Jayson, John Medeski of Medeski, Martin & Wood, and Chuck Doom, who played with Moreno in his other band Crosses.

The band also released its first single, also titled Saudade, via a free BitTorrent bundle, with the package including an accompanying music video.

The new project comes just months after Moreno and the Deftones released their eighth studio album, Gore, earlier this year (16). It marked their first record since the death of bassist Chi Cheng in 2013.

"Out of respect for the victims and to observe France's three national days of mourning, we will be postponing our show in Strasbourg Sunday night, November 15th. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and those affected by the terror attacks in France."

Chi Cheng Tragedy Sparks Road Safety Campaign

Deftones CHI CHENG

A road safety campaign has been launched in honour of tragic Deftones star CHI CHENG, who died following a car crash.

The bassist passed away earlier this year (13) after being in a semi-comatose state since the accident in 2008.

Cheng was thrown from a vehicle in a head-on collision in Santa Clara, California, and his family and friends are backing the newly-launched Buckle Up For Chi campaign, urging motorists to always wear a seat belt.

Deftones Pay Tribute To Late Bassist At Reading Festival

Deftones CHI CHENG

Rockers Deftones paid an emotional tribute to their late bass player CHI CHENG during their set at the Reading Festival in England on Friday (23Aug13).

The musician never recovered from a car accident in 2008 and spent years in a coma before passing away in April (13), but his presence was felt on the Main Stage at Reading as frontman Chino Moreno dedicated the group's Change (In The House of Flies) to his deceased former bandmate.

The California group hit the stage before System Of A Down and headliners Green Day.

Deftones Honour Kris Kross Star At Gig

Deftones Kris Kross

Rockers Deftones paid tribute to late Kris Kross star Chris 'mac Daddy' Kelly by covering the band's most famous song at a gig just hours after news of his death broke.

The 34-year-old hip-hop star was found unresponsive at his home in Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday (01May13) and later pronounced dead at a local hospital, prompting an outpouring of grief from fans and famous followers.

Deftones decided to honour Kelly in their own special way by covering Kris Kross' Jump during a gig in St. Louis, Missouri, and they also turned their clothing back-to-front in reference to the rappers' unique style.

The Deftones are left with a ''hole in their lives'' following the death of bassist CHI CHENG.

The musician passed away in hospital on Saturday (13.04.13) after being in a ''partially conscious state'' since sustaining serious injuries from a car crash in 2008 and his bandmates - Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham, Sergio Vega and Frank Delgado - have vowed to pass on as much ''love'' as they can in memory of the rocker.

A statement by guitarist Stephen reads: ''There are so many things i can say, and yet at this moment, none of it matters or compares to the loss everyone feels. There will be a hole in our lives where Chi once was.

Deftones' Stephen Carpenter Grieves Loss Of Chi Cheng

Deftones Stephen Carpenter CHI CHENG

Grieving Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter is struggling to come to terms with the loss of bandmate CHI CHENG, insisting "there will be a hole in our lives" following the bass player's death on Saturday (13Apr13).

The tragic rocker, 42, never recovered after slipping into a coma following a California car crash in November, 2008, and tributes from Tom Morello, Sebastian Bach, former Guns N' Roses stars Duff MCKagan and Slash and ex-My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way poured in as soon as the news of his passing broke over the weekend.

In a post on his Facebook.com page, Deftones singer Chino Moreno wrote, "Rest in peace Chi Cheng", and now Carpenter has released a touching statement on behalf of the whole group.

Chi Cheng's Legacy Lives On In Deftones Of 2013

Deftones

With the death of Deftones original bassist Chi Cheng goes the departure of perhaps one of the more unassuming but quietly pivotal bassists of the past two decades or so.

Deftones influence didn’t always lend itself to worthy disciples - with the likes of Limp Bizkit and the nu-metal movement completely failing to grasp the subtlety and intelligence behind the great slabs of noise that made up Deftones’ 1997’s breakthrough album ‘Around The Fur,’ looking even more rudimentary as the group furthered themselves from the field with 2000’s seminal ‘White Pony’- but with Cheng in charge of the lo-end the group set about producing a run of records between Around The Fur and 2003’s Deftones that have arguably been unsurpassed by any other heavy rock group then or since.

Cheng’s bass lines were key in White Pony in particular, featuring a diversity that meant they often the bed rock whether contributing to the furiously thrashing ‘Elite’ or playing with the space and silence as much as the noise on the quiet-loud builds of ‘Digital Bath’ and ‘Change (In The House Of Flies)’. Live he was again an assured if un-showy presence, the group at their ferocious peak with him on board. It was in 2008 that Cheng was involved in a serious car accident, which put him in the tragically irreversible coma, but he’s never been forgotten even as Deftones brought in another bassist. It’s perhaps a dark irony that last year’s Koi No Yokan is perhaps the best album the band have recorded since White Pony, but it’s also turned out to be a fitting tribute to a musician who set them on the path to what they are today – one of the few untouchable acts left in rock music.
