The musician, full name Jonathan Arthur DeBarge, has filed the papers in Los Angeles County Superior Court, citing "irreconcilable differences".
According to the court papers, obtained by Tmz.com, the couple wed in 1996 and separated in 2005.
They have four children.

DeBarge star MARK Debarge has been arrested on suspicion of drug possession.
According to a Tmz.com report, the R&B singer was in a Los Angeles hotel on Wednesday (11Apr12) with a female companion when her parole officer paid a routine visit and allegedly discovered narcotics.
DeBarge and his friend were then placed under arrest. He was taken into custody and booked for narcotics possession, and has since been released.
It is the second time a member of singing sibling group DeBarge has fallen foul of the law in recent weeks - El DeBarge was arrested in Los Angeles last month (Mar12) on suspicion of felony possession of narcotics with intent to sell.

American Idol went retro last night, with a look back at the 1980s. And on the day that Whitney Houston's final coroner's report was released, Jessica Sanchez paid tribute to the late singer with a rendition of one of her more upbeat number, 'How Will I Know?' Sanchez had some extra support from her guest mentor, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani. Stefani revealed that she was impressed that a 16 year old could produce such a great vocal performance. Even Randy Jackson, who had previously worked with Whitney herself, said "I can't believe the maturity you have."

Although his nerves were a problem in rehearsal, Steven Tyler told him his performance was "totally captivating," adding "I forgot where I was." Hollie opted for a version of 'Flashdance' but her performance fell flat, with Jennifer Lopez telling her "Your pitch was all over the place." Randy agreed, telling her "You're listening to what everyone is telling you.it didn't feel like the pop song it is."

El DeBarge has been cleared of drug possession charges from his arrest last week. Spencer Vodnoy, acting as attorney for the 'Rhythm of the Night' singer has told TMZ that Los Angeles police "made a huge mistake" when they arrested him on suspicion of drug dealing last week and said "At the end of the day the truth appears to have prevailed and I am sure he will be getting back to work on his career, his health and happiness."
The former singer with the family pop group Debarge was arrested for possession of cocaine, with intent to sell. However, there was not enough evidence to prove that El had done anything wrong, so charges had to be dropped. He had been picked up when officers found the narcotics in an area when DeBarge had been standing with another man - Curtis Freeman. Police had been carrying out an investigation near to the 101 Freeway and White Oaks Avenue in Los Angeles.
This isn't the first time that El DeBarge has been arrested in connection with drug use, or drug possession and at the time of this latest arrest, his attorney said "The DeBarge family is very close knit and have had their struggles with substance abuse. They will do what they always have done, which is to support their sibling through this" and in his latest statement, reveals that the DeBarge family are "relieved to hear that no charges will be filed" against him.

The Grammy award winning singer El DeBarge has been arrested in Los Angeles, on suspicion of possession of drugs, Los Angeles Times reports today (March 21, 2012). According to the report, LA police were carrying out and investigation near to the 101 freeway and White Oaks Avenue in Los Angeles on Monday (March 19, 2012) when they spotted El DeBarge and another man acting suspiciously.
Narcotics were reportedly discovered in an area where the singer had been standing, according to Norma Eisenman, spokeswoman for the Lapd. DeBarge's attorney, Spencer Vodnoy told reporters that he was sceptical about the charge, as he feels it was unlikely that El was selling the drugs, given his known struggles with drugs misuse. Vodnoy went on to say "The DeBarge family is very close knit and have had their struggles with substance abuse. They will do what they always have done, which is to support their sibling through this." The man that was with him at the time of arrest, Curtis Freeman, was arrested on suspicion of attempted drug possession.El DeBarge is best known for the song 'Rhythm of the Night,' performed by his family's group Debarge, in the mid 1980s. The Who's Johnny and Rhythm of the Night hitmaker stunned fans at the 2010 BET Awards last month (Jun10) when he performed a medley of DeBarge hits - and now his comeback plans have been released.
His new album, Second Chance, will be released in September (10), and marks a happier period for the singer/songwriter after a series of legal woes related to domestic violence and drug abuse.
