deadmau5 (born Joel Thomas Zimmerman; 05.01.1981)
deadmau5 is a Canadian house music producer.
Childhood: deadmau5 was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario. His parents are Nancy, an artist, Rod, a plant worker at General Motors. When he was a teenager, he got his first keyboard and began making music. According to his father, deadmau5's moniker came about after a dead mouse was discovered in his computer and he was thenceforth known as the 'dead mouse guy'.
Musical career: deadmau5 released his debut album 'Get Scraped' in 2005. In 2007, he set up his own record label mau5trap on which he released 'Random Album Title' in 2008, collaborating with Kaskade on his song 'I Remember'. He also collaborated with Kaskade on 'Move for Me' which reached number one on Billboard magazine's Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart. In 2009, he became the best-selling artist on Beatport with over 30,000 downloads. That year, he released his album 'For Lack of a Better Name' which was certified silver and won a Juno Award. It features the songs 'Ghosts 'n' Stuff' and 'Strobe'. In 2010, he was named as the house DJ for the MTV Video Music Awards and performed with Jason Derulo and Travie McCoy. His fifth album, 4×4=12, came out in 2010 and features the songs 'Some Chords', 'Animal Rights' and 'Sofi Needs a Ladder'. 'Some Chords' was used in an episode of 'CSI' in which deadmau5 made a cameo while 'Sofi Needs a Ladder' was used in 'The Hangover Part II'. In 2012, he released 'Album Title Goes Here' on which he collaborated with Chris James and My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way.
Personal life: deadmau5 dated Playboy's Lindsey Evans from 2010 to 2011. He then began dating tattoo artist Kat Von D. Though they briefly split in 2012, they were soon engaged to be married the following year. He currently lives with her in LA. In 2010, he collapsed on stage in Washington DC after suffering from exhaustion and vomiting. His subsequent shows were then cancelled. He caused controversy among DJs in 2008 by slamming their techniques and insisting that he was not a DJ. He later apologised after a backlash from many of his fans. “There are no CDs involved. It’s a technological orgy up there and I try and keep it more my music than anyone else’s. If people come out to see deadmau5 I want them to hear deadmau5 music.”
Deadmau5 has reignited his feud with Skrillex on social media.
The DJ, real name Joel Zimmerman, engaged in a bitter online battle with Justin Bieber and Skrillex last year (15) after the pair collaborated on the 22-year-old's Purpose album in November (15). The outspoken DJ went public with his thoughts about the odd couple, insisting the pop star had used Skrillex as "a goddamn tool" when they teamed up with Diplo for Where Are U Now.
Now Deadmau5 has attempted to start a new war of words by slamming Skrillex again, after the DJ recently became the subject of a lawsuit for this work with Justin.
Indie pop star White Hinterland claims the pair sampled her song Ring the Bell in their hit Sorry without her permission, and then refused to acknowledge her when she attempted to right the wrong in a meeting.

Dance music superstar Deadmau5's security was compromised on Monday (23May16) when pranksters hacked into his Soundcloud account online and offered up his personal details.
The hackers, who used the Twitter handle @_OurMine_, uploaded a string of Selena Gomez songs on his account and told the DJ, real name Joel Zimmerman, they were "testing" his security.
But the incident became a little more serious when they revealed the producer's old phone number and address in a handful of now-deleted tweets.
The hackers also threatened to leak nude photos of the DJ and use his credit card.

Skrillex has blasted fellow electronic dance music star Deadmau5 for attacking his collaboration with Justin Bieber.
The outspoken DJ went public with his thoughts about the odd couple, insisting the pop star had used Skrillex as "a goddamn tool" when they teamed up with Diplo for Where Are U Now, and now the hitmaker, real name Sonny Moore has hit back.
"If he (Deadmau5) was a real friend, he would come to me and be like, 'Yo, you shouldn't be working for Justin Bieber', rather than blowing it up all over the Internet and going out of his way to make people feel wrong for making a choice in their life," Skrillex tells Rolling Stone magazine.
"I would say to him, 'I enjoy working with Justin Bieber!' I'm a fan of his voice. And if you're a producer and you get an opportunity to work with someone who's the biggest artist in the world - for better or for worse - what would you say? Would you say no?"
Dance music star Deadmau5 has settled a lawsuit over the release of new remixes.
The DJ, real name Joel Zimmerman, cut ties with singer/producer Melleny Brown in 2008 after a lengthy bid to get out of his contract. In their 2008 settlement, Zimmerman gave Brown ownership of musical compositions and sound recordings he had made until that point, on the condition he would be asked for permission if they were used in future remixes, but Brown allegedly breached the deal and Zimmerman launched a lawsuit in October (16).
The 35-year-old sued for breach of contract, infringement of moral rights, false endorsement and punitive damages, and demanded $10 million (£6.9 million) for each track and an injunction preventing further distribution.
The parties have now reached a settlement and a judge has ruled Brown and bosses at Play Records are not allowed to create new remixes or mashups from the master recordings. However, Brown is able to retain the rights to the original recordings from 2006 to 2008.

Dance music star Deadmau5 is suing executives of an e-cigarette company for alleged trademark infringement.
The DJ, real name Joel Zimmerman, filed a federal lawsuit in California on Thursday (31Mar16) against the bosses of West Coast Vape, for naming their electronic cigarette line deadmodz and allegedly using a logo similar to his, complete with the same bubble-style font.
Zimmerman accuses the bosses of trying to capitalise on his fame and success and confusing his fans into thinking he is associated with the brand.
"Our client faces unscrupulous people trying to take advantage goodwill associated with his intellectual property and his fame," his attorney Irene Lee wrote to The Hollywood Reporter. "We are grateful for our fans and believe it’s our obligation to make sure our fans are not duped into buying things that Deadmau5 did not authorize."

Dance star and Tidal co-owner Deadmau5 has landed his own radio show on rival streaming service Apple Music's Beats 1.
The electronic DJ/producer will debut Mau5trap Presents on Friday (18Mar16).
He joins the likes of fellow celebrity presenters Elton John, Drake, DJ Khaled, and Charli XCX, who have all landed special programming on the Apple Music service since its launch in June (15).
Deadmau5's new gig will come as somewhat of a surprise to fans as he was unveiled as one of the star investors in Jay Z's Tidal streaming app a year ago (15). He joined the rap superstar, his wife Beyonce, Rihanna, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Usher, Madonna, Daft Punk, Win Butler and Alicia Keys, among others, when Jay Z relaunched the Swedish brand at a press conference in New York last March (15).

Kanye West has hit back at fellow musician Deadmau5 after he accused the rapper of piracy.
The 38-year-old hip-hop star hit headlines on Tuesday (01Mar16) after Deadmau5 branded Kanye a "d**k" on social media for sharing a picture of his computer with an Internet browser tab open for pirating website Pirate Bay. The image suggested he was illegally downloading synthesizer software Serum, which is sold by the electronic artist's Xfer Records.
"What the f**k @kanyewest..." Deadmau5 wrote. "Can't afford serum? D**k. Let's start a Kickstarter to help @kanyewest afford a copy of Serum. He needs a small loan of 200$ #prayforyeezy."
Not one to hold his tongue, the Yeezus star took to Twitter on Wednesday (02Mar16) to hit back at Deadmau5 and launch his latest tirade online. Kanye didn't explain why he had been browsing Pirate Bay, instead focusing on attacking the dance star, who is known for wearing an oversized mouse head during his sets.

Deadmau5 has slammed Kanye West for allegedly illegally downloading music production software created by the super-producer's record company partners.
Kanye posted an image of himself listening to singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens in his web browser on his Twitter.com account on Tuesday (01Mar16), upsetting Deadmau5, real name Joel Zimmerman, who reacted angrily as he believed the screenshot also featured the hip hop superstar downloading music-making Serum software.
Serum is produced by Xfer Records, the music label the Canadian dance music star co-founded.
"What the f**k @kanyewest... Can't afford serum? D**k," Deadmau5 tweeted, suggesting fans raise funds to enable Kanye to purchase the software, adding, "Let's start a Kickstarter to help @kanyewest afford a copy of Serum... He needs a small loan of 200$ #prayforyeezy."

The rapper has been called out by Deadmau5 after posting a picture which appeared to show the downloading site open in his browser.
Last month Kanye West declared on twitter he was $53million in debt, but are things so bad that he’s turned to illegally downloading software? While it’s probably all just an innocent misunderstanding, producer Deadmau5 didn't seem so willing to give the rapper the benefit of the doubt, after he tweeted a picture appearing to show he’d tried to download software Serum.
Kanye West has made another twitter blunder.
On Tuesday Kanye took to twitter to let us know that he’d been listening to Sufjan Stevens’ track ‘Death With Dignity’, by sharing a screenshot of the song open in Youtube. But the picture also showed the other tabs Kanye had open, including one which read ‘Pirate Bay Torrent Xfe’.

Dance Star Deadmau5 Deactivated His Social Media Accounts To Give Himself Time To Deal With "Depression Issues".
The DJ/producer recently stepped away from sites including Twitter and Facebook following a number of public spats, including a post criticising pop star Justin Bieber.
Deadmau5 has since reactivated his online accounts, and revealed he is dealing with health problems.
"Like many other human beings, I've been dealing with some depression issues that I don't need to go into detail with," he writes in a post on Tumblr.com. "I'd consider myself far from emotionally stable, though, not unstable enough to know support when I see it. Deactivating social media for a minute has nothing at all to do with pop stars or dubstep tryhards. It was a kneejerk reaction to something i saw coming a long time ago. Also, nobody's business but my own. I'd like to apologize to my fans and supporters for f**king off so abruptly, and leaving them out of the loop... I'll resume that program for you."
