David Tennant Billie Piper Doctor Who

More than ten years after they played a crucial part in bringing ‘Doctor Who’ back to the small screen and mainstream popularity, David Tennant and Billie Piper are set to reunite in a series of audio episodes.

Tennant and Piper portrayed the Timelord and his companion Rose Tyler in ‘Doctor Who’ between 2005 and 2006, and were one of the most fondly remembered combinations as the sci-fi series made its comeback in the noughties. Now, they’ll be getting back together for three audio-only episodes of ‘Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures – Volume 2’, which will be released in November this year.

Is 'Broadchurch' Season 2 Really As Bad As The Internet Says?

David Tennant

Broadchurch season 2 has managed to turn off 2 million fans just four episodes in. Last night's episode drew 5.6 million viewers, 100,000 down from last week and a huge decrease from the 7.6 million that ITV pulled in for its opener.

Broadchurch season 2Olivia Colman [L] and David Tennant [R] star in Broadchurch season 2, which has been criticised in the press

After the critically acclaimed first season, season 2 has been derided by fans - particularly on Twitter - for its hammy dialogue and bizarre plot lines. In recent weeks, mother Beth Latimer, played by Jodie Whittaker, was ridiculed when she returned to court to give evidence just minutes after giving birth. Elsewhere, both prosecution and defence teams in what would surely be deemed a high profile murder trials, appear to have hired bumbling clueless assistants who seemingly have no grasp on the law.

David Tennant Returns To US Screens Tonight In ‘Broadchurch’ Remake ‘Gracepoint’

David Tennant Anna Gunn

David Tennant is set to solve a familiar mystery in Fox’s ‘Gracepoint’ tonight. We say familiar because ‘Gracepoint’ is a remake ‘Broadchurch’, the BBC drama that Tennant starred in just last year. So what have US audiences got to look forward to tonight on Fox?

GracepointIt's not 'Broadchurch', it's 'Gracepoint'

Last year ‘Broadchurch’ was a critical and ratings success in the UK, so it’s no surprise that an American network wanted their own version. What might be surprising is the decision to cast David Tennant, the star of the original, in the role again. But hey, this man was once ‘Doctor Who’ so we’re never going to complain about him being on our screens.

'What We Did On Our Holiday' Transfers A Formula From Small To Big Screen

David Tennant Rosamund Pike Billy Connolly

The new British comedy 'What We Did on Our Holiday' carries on a fine tradition of lively romps with serious undercurrents, blending a cast of comedy stars and solid actors to create hilariously offbeat characters. But what sets the film apart is its approach to its child stars.

They’re all up for Best Drama, but David Tennant and Olivia Colman are in line for individual acting nods for their respective roles. Top of the Lake's Elisabeth Moss and Peter Mullan, and The Fall's Gillian Anderson also compete.

While Tennant’s role as DI Alec Hardy in Broadchurch - a role he’s currently reprising in an American remake - has landed him a spot on the short list.

Top of the Lake's Jane Campion, Broadchurch's Chris Chibnall, and The Fall’s  Allan Cubitt are all nominating for writing awards as the Broadcasting Press Guild is dominated by Channel 4 and BBC 2 – the former of which took all four documentary nominations in best single documentary prize.

Matt Smith Tom Baker David Tennant

Today is Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary, in case you hadn’t noticed by the Google Doodle and pretty much everyone online talking about it non-stop for the past month or so. It is also another day closer to Matt Smith’s departure with this year’s Christmas special. In the spirit of celebrating both the show and Smith’s place in its illustrious history, we’ve compiled a brief list of the most memorable Doctors in DW history, to see where Smith ranks among them.

Excited about the anniversary? You should be.

5. This spot is often given to Peter Davison, aka The Fifth Doctor. His hiring at the time was somewhat controversial, since he is the youngest actor (besides Matt Smith himself) to take on the part of the centuries-old Time Lord. We’ve got to give it to Davison, however. He did create a complex character and was really adept at portraying the Doctor’s internal conflict. Fifth place it is.

Paul McGann Returns To Doctor Who For Pre-Anniversary Short, Fans Renew Hope For More Cameos

Paul McGann Sylvester McCoy David Tennant

The excitement for next week’s Doctor Who 50th anniversary is almost at its peak, especially after the special mini-episode that was released yesterday. As if in response to fans’ worries that the 50th anniversary wouldn’t pay proper homage to DW history, Paul McGann, aka the eighth Doctor pops in to save the day aboard a crashing ship. Because, you know, that’s pretty much the Doctor’s shtick. And boy is it exciting to see him.

Faces of Doctor Who
Matt Smith and David Tennant were confirmed a while ago, but the involvement of all other Doctors was a guessing game until now.

After some actors, who have previously played our favorite Time Lord, denied any involvement in the anniversary, people were beginning to worry. Recently Colin Baker, who played the sixth Doctor, explained in no uncertain terms that he had not been asked to reprise his role in the special.

Peter Capaldi: Twitter Explodes In Welcome For New Doctor Who

Peter Capaldi Mark Gatiss David Tennant Matt Smith

Hoardes tuned in to the BBC last night (4th August) to watch Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor and be the first to hear the news. Peter Capaldi was finally unveiled after plenty of hype, reminiscing and dry ice. The 55-year-old new Doctor, famous for his role as the profanity-prone Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It, walked out onstage to a storm of applause and seemed slightly bewildered by it all.

Let's All Hope He Keeps That Fabulous 'Tache!

Well, the Doctor's still white and male, so no major changes there, despite betting and predictions, but Capaldi will represent an older generation than the previous three Doctors, harking back to the original TV series where the Whos were slightly more aged gentlemen than David Tennant or Matt Smith. Keen eyes will have already noticed that Capaldi, a DW fan himself, has already acquainted himself in front of the camera on the series, having appeared in 'The Fires of Pompeii' episode alongside David Tennant.

Regenerate! Doctor Who Replacing Matt Smith At The End Of The Current Season

Matt Smith David Tennant Billie Piper Karen Gillan Jenna-louise Coleman

Fans of Doctor Who better say their goodbyes to the show’s star Matt Smith, who will be leaving his role at the end of the season. Smith’s Doctor will regenerate during the 2013 Christmas special and get a brand new body (or in non-Doctor Who terms, a new actor will come in to fill the role.) Smith has been playing the Doctor for the past four seasons of the show (where did the time go?) having taken over from David Tennant in 2010. As you might imagine, that wasn’t an easy transition for the fans. There is likely to be a lot of nostalgia for “the old Doctor Who” after this change as well. As for Matt Smith, he has no regrets, saying for BBC news that working on the show has been "the most brilliant experience".

This season of the show is filled with surprises and big events for the Whovian community. After the show introduced a new companion to the Doctor, played by Jenna-louise Coleman, its 50th anniversary special is due during the series’ fall season. Smith has already filmed the special episode, which will feature cameo appearances by DW alumni David Tennant and Billie Piper. Referring to his time-travelling companions, Amy (Karen Gillan), Rory (Arthur Darvill) and Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman), Smith said: "It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the Tardis for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go..."

During the announcement of Smith’s departure, head writer Steven Moffat expressed his admiration for the youngest actor to ever play the Doctor: "Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me. The way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry - I just never knew what was coming next.

A Stellar Cast: David Tennant Leads Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Cast

David Tennant Doctor Who Joanna Page Matt Smith John Hurt Jenna-louise Coleman

David Tennant will lead a stellar cast for the forthcoming Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special. The former Gavin & Stacey star Joanna Page will also join the cast, as will Billie Piper, who was once a Doctor Who star herself. Current stars Matt Smith, John Hurt and Jenna-Louise Colman will all appear in the special episode which is due to start filming this week, according to The Daily Mail.

Joanna Page recently gave birth to her first child and it’s not clear which role she will take, though she attended a recent read-through for the forthcoming special. Back in 2010 when it was rumoured that she may appear in Doctor Who, Joanna commented “I think I’ve got to be the only Welsh actress who has never been in Doctor Who so if someone would like me to be in Doctor Who I would love the part.”

Both the 10th (David Tennant) and 11th (Matt Smith) Time Lords will appear in the show, which will be screened in cinemas in November, according to the report. The show’s producer Steven Moffat is working hard to ensure that the content of the anniversary programme stays under wraps. “One length I've gone to which is a really good security measure - I make sure I don't get a script, because I will lose it. I forbid people to hand me one. It's on my computer under lock and key.” Matt Smith explained “It's about looking back and forward at the same time, a bit like the Doctor does. It's about celebrating everyone that's been involved with it, all the wonderful actors that have taken part before me, and it's also about looking forward.”

Olivia Colman Shines In ITV's New Drama Broadchurch

David Tennant

ITV's scheduling has been lacking somewhat over the past few years. Its 'hard-hitting' drama is dismal, its comedy is comically poor and its reality TV is... reality TV. However one thing it is very good at - and has always been - is murder mysteries. With a legacy including Morse and Frost there is a certain alluring death-drive to their programming, which is why Broadchurch was worth looking forward to.

Starring David Tennant and the utterly brilliant Olivia Colman (who has dazzled us with the sheer multitudinousness of her roles, from the tragic lead in Tyrannosaur to hilarious turns in Green Wing, Rev and Twenty Twelve) as the forefront of a good cast, Broadchurch is seems to be a well practised exercise in murder-mystery. At the centre of the theme and tone of the show is the consequence of a murder in a small, close knit community. Colman and Tennant play an investigative duo in search of a missing boy - who is found to be dead - and subsequently his killer.

While far from being wholly original and playing on numerous well worn clichés, from the copper with a murky past (Tennant) to the intrusion of the media, it still has plenty going for it. As the Telegraph said, "What stood out most was the intense, microscopic exposure of hurt." The Independent wasn't blown away by the show as a whole, but on the strength of Colman's performance alone recommends the watch. Indeed, if murder-mystery is your thing then check it out.

Christopher Reeves' Superman Is The Greatest Sci-Fi Star

Harrison Ford Frank Oz David Tennant Will Smith James Earl Jones William Shatner Patrick Stewart Michael J Fox

A recent poll put together to celebrate the release of the board game Stratego Sci-Fi has found that the late Christopher Reeves as the Man of Steel is the public's favourite sci-fi star to grace the silver screen.

Reeves battled off tough competition from Star Wars’ Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Yoda (Frank Oz), who placed second and third respectively, and Star Trek's James T Kirk (William Shatner) and Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), who placed seventh and tenth in the countdown.

Perhaps the most unusual choice for the top ten was Will Smith's Agent Jay character from the Men In Black trilogy, who made it all the way to number five in the countdown, whereas one of the more natural choices - David Tennant as Dr Who - was pushed all the was down to number twenty.

The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists! Review

Very Good
Aardman returns to hand-crafted clay-mation for this riotous seafaring romp.

The film is almost too crowded with witty visual and verbal gags to catch on a single viewing. Although it's also too corny to be a real classic.

The Pirate Captain (voiced by Grant) never gets any respect, especially with the Pirate of the Year competition gearing up. But his first mate (Freeman) and rag-tag crew (Tovey, Gleeson and Jenson) are fearlessly loyal. While accumulating plunder to win the award, they accidentally hijack a scientific ship and then travel with Charles Darwin (Tennant) to win a science prize in London. But this means that the crew needs to get dangerously close to venomous pirate-hater Queen Victoria (Staunton).

The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists Trailer

The Pirate Captain, although relentlessly optimistic, has never won the Pirate of the Year Award. Perhaps it has something to do with his crew - many of them are pirates but some aren't (and one is a fish dressed in a pirate hat). Or maybe it's because he doesn't have much of a success rate when it comes to stealing treasure.

FrightNight Review

Good
This remake of Todd Holland's 1985 schlock horror is more about the comedy than the terror, camping up the characters and indulging in grotesque effects shots.

Besides some cheap scares, it never generates a moment of suspense, but it's still good fun.

In suburban Las Vegas, Charley (Yelchin) is a nerdy teen with an impossibly hot girlfriend (Poots) and a feisty single mum (Collette). But there's something suspicious about the new neighbour Jerry (Farrell), whom Charley's best friend Ed (Mintz-Plasse) insists is a vampire. And as events start to get increasingly bizarre, Charley begins to believe it himself. He asks TV vampire expert Peter Vincent (Tennant) for advice, but Peter is a jaded showman who doesn't really believe in the supernatural. Or does he?

How To Train Your Dragon Review

Excellent
A winning combination of vivid imagery, snappy writing and a strong narrative lifts this far above most animated features. And it also has a surprisingly effective message woven into the comedy and action.

In an isolated Viking village, vicious attacks by fire-breathing dragons are standard, so naturally the villagers grow up to be dragon-slayers. The exception is Hiccup (Baruchel), a geeky teen who simply can't think inside the box, as it were. His annoyed tough-guy father Stoick (Butler) reluctantly allows Hiccup to train at the dragon-fighting school run by Gobber (Ferguson).

Hiccup is only interested because the sexy Astrid (Ferrera) is the top student.

Glorious 39 Review

Excellent
Telling a story from a rarely examined period of British history, this pre-war drama is a bundle of suspense, mystery and personal emotion that's beautifully filmed and sharply played by a first-rate cast.

Anne (Garai) is the adopted eldest daughter of powerful politician Alexander Keyes (Nighy) and his wife (Agutter), who went on to have two of their own children (Redmayne and Temple). It's the glorious summer of 1939, when Britain felt like it had averted conflict with Hitler, so when Anne stumbles on hints of a government conspiracy, she turns to a fellow actor (Bonneville) and her boyfriend (Cox) for help. But the mystery only deepens, compounded by a sinister Home Office official (Northam) and the distracting presence of her Aunt Elizabeth (Christie).

The Last September Review

Weak
I really wanted to like The Last September. Sunday afternoon, really in the mood for a period piece, I sat down with the promising flick... and got a tired old romantic triangle flick set in 1920s Ireland that plodded along with little regard for the audience. The setting here is elusive: The title refers obliquely to Ireland's last September before its revolution, but the backdrop of war barely registers above the genteel performances and sleepy script.

Bright Young Things Review

OK
Bright Young Things arrives at an ideal time. Focusing on a group of twentysomething socialites having a frolicking good time in 1930s London, while the press hungers for every detail, it capitalizes on the current media's fascination with idiot VIPs like the Hilton sisters and Bijou Phillips. For some, Bright Young Things could also serve as a sunnier alternative to the gloomy young things in Garden State, Natalie Portman excluded.

It's OK to have fun in your twenties, and in Bright Young Things, the characters have plenty of it. They attend lavish costume parties that scream of good times and well-funded debauchery, do cocaine like Rick James in 1979 and take trips to the countryside, all the while exchanging quips. At its best, the movie resembles a far more literate, sophisticated version of an episode of the E! True Hollywood Story.

Bright Young Things Review

Very Good

"Bright Young Things" is a terribly witty romp through 1930s pre-war London with a pack of idle young swells who live scrumptious but superficial lives of joyous gossip-page decadence and complacent scandal that has the potential to ruin them.

Very cleverly adapted (from Evelyn Waugh's novel "Vile Bodies") and directed by the gifted comedic actor Stephen Fry ("Wilde," "Peter's Friends"), our surrogate in this world is Adam Symes (newcomer Stephen Campbell Moore), a well-connected but flat broke novelist and fringe member of this society who is railroaded into writing an anonymous gossip column about his pals -- although he's soon inventing entirely fictional members of the circle just to keep his readers amused.

An ironic failure at schemes to get rich quick so he can ask the "frantically bored" and beautiful but secretly vulnerable and melancholy Nina (subtly heartbreaking and simply wonderful Emily Mortimer) to marry him, Adam's fortunes -- which practically fluctuate with the tides -- are just one source of endless humor. But director Fry furtively hints at shades of compunction and misfortune under the film's carefree surface that bubble up as world events encroach on these lives of leisure, eventually taking the film to an unexpected level of empathy, nuance and humanity.
