Casualties Of War Review

Excellent
Vietnam War movies are always tough to watch, especially for those of us who go through life burdened with liberal guilt. But of all the Vietnam movies out there, none is more painful to watch -- and paradoxically more beautifully shot -- than Casualties of War, in which all of director Brian De Palma's prodigious talents are in full effect. To steal a line from another Vietnam classic: "The horror..."

Based on an allegedly true event that was reported in the New Yorker, Casualties is a stripped-down tale of a small platoon of Army grunts who head into the jungle only to lose their humanity, a trope that has traveled from Conrad to Coppola to here. It's Satan in paradise, wreaking havoc and leaving unexplainable carnage behind.

I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can Review

Good
Four years earlier she was An Unmarried Woman, now Jill Clayburgh returns to the screen in another oddly familiar role that would become synonymous with her career, as a woman struggling with the perils of modern life.

Here Clayburgh plays real-life TV producer Barbara Gordon, who was also a Valium addict. A spur of the moment decision leads her to quit, and after jitters and siezures she finally ends up near death, drying out in a rehab clinic. (If nothing else, Dancing enumerates exactly how awful Valium withdrawal can be -- as bad as heroin, so the film says.)

Hurlyburly Review

Bad
Blah blah blah! The drug addicts and freakazoids of Hurlyburly talk a lot but have surprisingly little to say. What wants to be a black comedy and clever character drama is actually a poorly-acted exercise in extreme tedium. Yawn. Totally unbelievable dialogue and broadly drawn characters leave little to recommend.

The Firm Review

Good
Run, Tom, run! Mr. Cruise got a workout in this picture, a film that had him on the run from the evil law firm that employed him and whose clients consist only of mobsters, killers, and other crooks. An all-star cast otherwise makes up for a largely uninspired, overly complex, and far too long movie that nonetheless maintains audience interest throughout a 2.5+ hour runtime. Holly Hunter is particularly good as a slutty private eye's assistant -- in fact, she was nominated for an Oscar for the cheeseball role. Hal Holbrook also earns high marks as an appropriately evil and mysterious bossman.
