Obsessed (2009) Review

Good
One pretty much knows what to expect going into a movie titled Obsessed. And in this case, that title delivers on every front -- a big business hotshot is propositioned by a disturbed secretary, and she turns into a vicious femme fatale who stalks our hero and attempts to tear down the magnificent life he has worked hard to build. What outrageous, over-the-top tripe. And what hysterical fun.

Here is the most fantastically overwrought, deliberately melodramatic, white-knuckle B-movie of the year, a film so steeped in the formula of the psycho-sexual suspense flick that it works as both a thriller and a comedy. It is a classic howler, the kind of movie so in on the joke that it invites the audience to scream, shout, and cackle at the screen in a celebration of the collective joy of good trash. And Obsessed is very good trash.

Lakeview Terrace Review

Terrible
Lakeview Terrace is the seventh film directed by playwright Neil LaBute and it is, by a wide margin, the director's weakest effort to date. A domestic thriller built on brittle tension, the film brandishes racial conflict and flailing machismo before revealing that it has little insight into either topic. Depending on who you talk to, these facts are burdened or lightened by the appearance of the ever-ostentatious Samuel L Jackson.

Set in an affluent corner of a Los Angeles suburb, Jackson enters the screen quietly as Abel Turner, a veteran member of the LAPD. On any given day Abel is either the best parent and neighbor you've ever met, or a lumbering, blue nightmare. The latter opinion is that of Chris and Lisa Mattson (Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington), a young, interracial couple from Chicago who have just bought the house next to Turner's. She designs clothing while he works for an all-natural supermarket chain named Good. Abel isn't fond of seeing a pretty black woman with a white boy, but his bigger problems are with domestic decorum.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Review

Unbearable
Though Star Trek: Nemesis is close on its heels, you will not find a worse Trek experience than Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.

What makes it so bad? Could it be a scene with Spock in jet boots (no, those aren't ski boots!), racing to save Captain Kirk as he plummets to his death from El Capitan. A now gray-haired Uhura, doing a dance in the sand with palm fronds against the moons of an alien planet (meant as a distraction, it certainly works). Or is it the atrocious effects, the product of a limited budget and too many miniatures?
