David Fincher To Direct 'World War Z' Sequel

David Fincher Brad Pitt

David Fincher is reportedly close to a deal to direct the long-anticipated sequel to Brad Pitt’s World War Z, just a few months after plans for the movie looked to have been mothballed, according to knowledgeable sources.

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions are said to be intent on moving forward with the sequel, thanks mainly to the studio’s new CEO Jim Gianopulos, who has placed it back on the calendar for release after its previous head, Brad Grey, had removed it back in February this year, according to Variety on Wednesday (April 26th).

With $19,1 Million, "Interstellar" Blasts Past "Big Hero 6" At The Box Office

David Fincher Jake Gyllenhaal

With Marvel making a play for the kids’ animated movie market, there’s finally some variety at the box office this weekend. The studio’s Disney-esque hero adventure, Big Hero 6 takes plays in San Fransokyo (that’s a future hybrid between San Francisco and Tokyo, in case you’ve missed the subtle wordplay) and centres on Hiro Takadashi.

Big Hero 6
Big Hero 6 couldn't quite match Interstellar at the box office, but is getting a round of critical praise.

Hero is a 13-year-old child prodigy, who has already graduated high school and spends his free time building fighter robots. Why not, right?

Halloween Box Office Disappoints, As "Nightcrawler" And "Ouija" Barely Break $10,9 Million Each

Jake Gyllenhaal Ben Affleck David Fincher

Halloween weekend was a scary time indeed – especially for the movie industry, which saw record low figures over the three-day period. Maybe it was the fact that Halloween fell on a Friday this year, or maybe people just aren’t as easily swayed to go see a movie anymore. Even the highly praised Nightcrawler, starring Jake Gyllenhaal barely broke the $10 million barrier with $10,909 million.

Nightcrawler still
Jake Gyllenhaal gives the performance of a lifetime in Nightcrawler.

We’re getting so specific because last week’s holdover Ouija fell behind by just $9000, raking in $10,9 million. Clearly, this was the weekend of the creepers, but even the creepiest of them all, Gyllenhaal’s Lou Bloom, couldn’t drive enough people to the theatre to makeup for the slow season. That said, the movie has gathered rave reviews and a lot of buzz for Oscars season, so it’s definitely not a loss.

Despite A Great Round For "Nightcrawler", The Halloween Office Is Scary...ly Bad

Jake Gyllenhaal Brad Pitt David Fincher

With Halloween weekend almost over, Ouija has been dethroned. The new box office champion is Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nightcrawler, which is already being lauded as one of the best films of the year. So, after all the critics have heaped their praise and the movie-going crowd has cast the vote, let’s talk numbers.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler
Nightcrawler is already being described as one of the best movies of the  year by several critics.

With Halloween on a Friday this year, the earnings overall were nothing to write home about. Nightcrawler came first, but only managed a measly $10,909 in ticket sales. Meanwhile, Ouija did pretty well too,  dropping just $8,760 in its second weekend, according to Rentrak (via Reuters. ) This made for a 10,9 weekend and a close call for Nightcrawler.

Is Brad Pitt's 'Fury' Too Violent?

Brad Pitt David Ayer David Fincher Keanu Reeves

It was undoubtedly the star pulling power of Brad Pitt that helped David Ayer's World War II drama Fury accelerate past Gone Girl to the top of the box-office this weekend. Pitt and his tank buddies took $23.5 million in ticket sales to finish at No.1, whilst David Fincher's mystery thriller took a creditable $17.8 million to drop to second place.

Fury'Fury' is said to be one of the most violent movies of the year

In third place was Fox's animated feature The Book of Life, which took $17 million, and Disney's Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day took $12 million.

It's No Classic, But Brad Pitt's 'Fury' Should Top Box-Office

Brad Pitt David Ayer David Fincher

It's safe to assume we all imagined Fury would probably be better than it is. Brad Pitt - playing a sort of version of his Inglorious Basterds character - teaming up with David Ayer, one of the world's most exciting directors, for a World War II epic. What's not to like? Well, it appears Ayer, who also penned the script, left too many clichés in there and not nearly enough drama.

FuryBrad Pitt heads a stellar cast in David Ayer's World War II epic 'Fury'

This isn't a bad movie by any stretch - in fact, it's a pretty good war movie. It just won't trouble the Oscars voters. Fury cost around $68 million to produce and should take around $25 million from 3,155 locations this weekend.

"Gone Girl" Continues Box Office Hold Over, "Dracula Untold" Barely Makes A Ripple

Ben Affleck Rosamund Pike David Fincher Robert Downey Jr

In a pretty predictable turn of events this weekend, David Fincher’s critically acclaimed baby Gone Girl has gone on to top Dracula Untold. Gone Girl’s second weekend saw a 29% drop, but even so, it was an easy win over Dracula, which can already be counted as a flop at this point.

Ben Affleck
David Fincher's powerhouse Gone Girl easily smoked the competition for the second weekend in a row.

Through Sunday, its 10th day in release, Gone Girl's domestic total is $78.3 million for 20th Century Fox and New Regency. Dracula, meanwhile, came in second with $29,5 million. Movie of the year it ain’t,  but it could have been a lot worse.

"Gone Girl" Wins Weekend Box Office. Barely.

Ben Affleck Rosamund Pike David Fincher Denzel Washington

Over the weekend, David Fincher’s suspenseful thriller Gone Girl breezed past box office competition, including the supernatural prequel Annabelle. Fincher's mystery flick about a husband, who finds himself the prime suspect in the disappearance of his wife, did better than any of the director’s previous films and scored a $38 million debut – much hire than industry experts originally predicted.

Gone Girl, Ben Affleck
Ben Affleck plays the anti-hero in Fincher's Gone Girl.

Gone Girl easily blew past Fincher’s previous personal best – the Jodie Foster starrer Panic Room, which opened to $30 million in 2002. Starring Affleck as Nick Dunne and Britain’s Rosamund Pike as missing wife Amy, with Neil Patrick Harris and Emily Ratajkowski in supporting roles, the film was a favorite of critics and a commercial hit for the time of year.

David Fincher, Ben Affleck And Rosamund Pike Talk "Gone Girl" At New York Premiere

David Fincher Ben Affleck Rosamund Pike

So Gone Girl, the movie, is a thing now, out there in the world for audiences to enjoy (selected audiences, for the moment). The David Fincher adaptation of a Gillian Flynn thriller received a lot of critical praise ahead of its release and stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike managed to squeeze in a little extra promotion on premiere night – without going into too much spoiler-y detail, of course.

David Fincher's film-making philosophy - hire the right people and stand back.

Affleck in particular had some praise to heap on Fincher. In an interview for Entertainment Weekly, the actor said: “It was great to work with David and I learned a great deal from him. David’s also, despite his reputation, a very funny and nice guy. Not just a demon.”

Rosamund Pike Suggests 'Gone Girl' Sex Scenes Were "Inappropriate"

Rosamund Pike David Fincher Ben Affleck

The British actress Rosamund Pike who stars in David Fincher's forthcoming drama Gone Girl has suggested the sex scenes that she shares in the movie with Neil Patrick Harris were "inappropriate." While the majority of the movie press has taken this as Pike damning the scenes on moral grounds - she was probably just joking around in an otherwise pretty interesting interview with Glamour.

Rosamund Pike

The 35-year-old, best known for her work in Die Another Day, plays the female lead Amy Dunne in Fincher's adaptation of Gillian Flynn's best-selling novel of the same name. However, when it came to working with her co-stars, Pike suggested things got a little awkward.

Ben Affleck Is Creepy And Questionable In First Trailer For David Fincher's "Gone Girl"

Ben Affleck Rosamund Pike Neil Patrick Harris Tyler Perry David Fincher

The first trailer for David Fincher’s Gone Girl is out. The last bit of news about the Gillian Flynn adaptation came out months ago, so the trailer provides a helpful reminder that A. The project is still moving ahead and B. It looks quite good at this point. Ben Affleck plays Nick Dunne, whose wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), disappears on their fifth wedding anniversary. Nick soon ends up as the primary suspect in the police investigation  and has to find his wife to prove his innocence.

Gone Girl Promo
The first trailer gives us very little to go on.

The new trailer emphasizes the investigation and the pressure that Affleck’s character feels as the suspicion falls squarely on him. It also seems to feature Amy’s lifeless body, meaning that Nick will face a murder investigation at some point in the film. The trailer also plays up the barrage of media attention that Nick and the investigation attract, so this will probably be a prominent subject in the film.

American producers are always looking for material to turn into movies, so it's no surprise that they continually remake European hits. Recent examples include of course David Fincher's 2011 remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (based on the 2009 Swedish film), as well as smaller movies like Prince Avalanche (2011's Icelandic movie Either Way), the Steve Carell comedy Dinner for Schmucks (France's 1998 romp Le Diner de Cons) and the upcoming thriller Brick Mansions (2004's District 13, also from France).

Now producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov have snapped up the rights to the hit Norwegian thriller Pioneer, which has just opened in the UK. A well-known story in Scandinavia, it's based on true events surrounding Norwegian and American divers whose health was damaged after working 400 metres below the ocean surface to lay an oil pipeline 40 years ago. After a long court battle, the European Court of Human Rights last year ruled that the Norwegian government was guilty of not providing adequate warnings about the risk.

Sacha Baron Cohen Leaves Freddie Mercury Movie As Attention Turns To Depp

Sacha Baron Cohen Johnny Depp Brian May Queen Robert De Niro David Fincher Tom Hooper

Sacha Baron Cohen has left the movie biopic of iconic Queen frontman Freddie Mercury after a disagreement over the direction of the project. Cohen - who bears a dramatic resemblance to the singer - had wanted to make a gritty R-rated drama about the star's life, enlisting David Fincher and Tom Hooper to develop the project.

However - as is always the case with approval of Queen projects - the remaining members of the band were concerned about the movie's potential effect on Mercury's legacy and seemingly wanted to make a sugar-coated PG movie.

According to Deadline.com, the living members of Queen, including Brian May, rejected British writer Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) as the writer, as well as both Fincher (The Social Network) and Hooper (The King's Speech) as directors.

Justin Timberlake's triumphant return to pop music will be made all the more impressive as it has been announced that none other than Hollywood heavyweight David Fincher will be directing the official video for the single.

Some people may be scratching their heads here, because hasn't the video for 'Suit and Tie' already been made and released? The Playlist first announced the news, saying that 'Suit and Tie' collaborator Jay Z will also be appearing in the video, which is to begin shooting in the coming weeks. Amazon Set To Begin Commissioning Original Shows

Kevin Spacey David Fincher

It looks as though Amazon will be taking a page from Netflix' book and go into making their own original television shows following the success of Netflix' venture into original programming.

This could very well be the start of the future of television (not to jump to conclusions or anything) following the success of the new Netflix series House of Cards, the Kevin Spacey-staring and David Fincher-directed political drama, which has already garnered heaps of critical praise. With the long-awaited fourth season of Arrested Development on the way too, Netflix are genuinely bringing new ideas to the table in regards to the future of programming and it looks like Amazon are ready to swoop on in there before it's too late.

The online marketplace juggernaut will initially be concentrating on children's shows through their production branch, Amazon Studios. They have already announced that five kids shows are in the production stages, with pilots for each of the shows set to run on run on their streaming services Amazon Prime and Amazon Instant Video in the near future. This comes after the company also announced that it was planning on bringing six new comedy shows to it's expanding arsenal of products, with the show's pilots also being made available for free on their streaming services once completed. The new shows will be made available on Amazon Instant Video and Prime Instant Video in America and Canada, and on Lovefilm in the UK and Germany.
