Gillian Anderson Secures Equal Pay With David Duchovny Ahead Of 'X-Files' Return

Gillian Anderson David Duchovny

She may have won Emmys and Golden Globes for her performances as Dana Scully in ‘The X-Files’, but Gillian Anderson apparently had to stand her ground and insist on equal pay with her co-star David Duchovny for the series’ imminent return.

47 year old Anderson reportedly had to battle to secure pay parity with 55 year old Duchovny, according to an article in the Daily Mirror. ‘The Fall’ actress, said to be worth £17 million, was initially offered only half of what Duchovny was for the first ‘X-Files’ series in 14 years.

It’s a significant victory financially as well as symbolically, as Duchovny was offered between £155,000 and £172,000 per episode for the comeback tenth series, according to some reports.

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny were two of the billboard names on the second day of Comic-Con San Diego, reuniting to discuss the 20th anniversary of their seminal sci-fi show The X-Files. Hundreds of fans squeezed into Ballroom 20 to hear Mulder and Scully talk, though the question on everyone's lips was clear: will there be an X-Files feature film?

Anderson recently found herself back in the spotlight with the success of BBC drama The Fall, and Duchovny hasn't been out of work since the show therefore a new series would be difficult, though a movie would certainly be viable. In fact, Anderson admitted she wouldn't be interested in a return to the small screen, though added, "a film would be great," to woops and cheers in the audience, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

It would be the third movie spin-off, after The X-Files and The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

The X-Files: The Complete Series Review

Extraordinary
In the early 1990s, the young Fox network was just beginning to hit its stride with an odd mix of television not found on the major three networks. Fox viewers found irreverent comedy courtesy of the dysfunctional families on The Simpsons and Married... with Children; gripping real-life crime action in COPS and America's Most Wanted; and sappy post adolescent soap drama with Beverly Hills 90210 and Party of Five. Just about the only thing missing from this eccentric network line-up was a show about aliens. Oh, but wait... oeven that show would eventually find a home on Fox; in the fall of 1993, The X-Files arrived.

The riveting pilot episode quickly sets the framework for the entire series. FBI Agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) works outside of the bureau's mainstream on discarded, unsolved cases regarding paranormal activity called the X-Files. His immediate supervisors think his work is without merit, so they assign a young female agent, Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) to work with Mulder and disprove his wild theories. Mulder believes we are not alone in the universe; Scully believes science holds the key to the unexplained. Their first case together -- teenagers being abducted and killed in Oregon -- raises more questions than answers and leaves Scully with little exculpatory evidence to report back to her superiors.

Evolution Review

Weak
Here's my candidate for most creative casting of 2001....

In Evolution, you get David Duchovny, (former) star of TV's The X-Files who has failed miserably to cross over to any kind of success in film. Julianne Moore, former independent darling before she started making movies like The Lost World and Hannibal. Orlando Jones, 7-Up pitchman and easily typecast goofball. And Seann William Scott, whose most visible role was as a stoner in Dude, Where's My Car?

Excellent
For the uninitiated who know Steven Soderbergh only as the auteur behind such delights as Traffic and the Ocean's Eleven remake, know that Soderbergh was once far better known as a god of the indie film scene, the man behind movies like sex, lies & videotape, King of the Hill, and Schizopolis.

Like King of the Hill and the groundbreaking videotape, some of this work is genius.

Return To Me Review

Very Good

Taken out of context, the plot of "Return To Me" sounds like a really cheesy gimmick for a movie romance.

David Duchovny plays a man whose beautiful, adoring wife (Joley Richardson) dies in a car crash. Minnie Driver is a heart patient who gets the dead woman's ticker in a transplant. After a respectable amount of time has passed for the purposes of good taste, they meet by chance and fall in love.

Your eyes are rolling, right? But surprise, surprise -- the whole magical-innards angle is merely a jumping off point for a sincere and very funny love story that is easily the best romantic dramedy since "Jerry Maguire."
