Into the Blue 2: The Reef Review

Unbearable
Into the Blue 2: The Reef sounds like soft-core porn, is made on the level of soft-core porn, and might have been more entertaining had it gone full tilt into soft-core porn territory. Not that it doesn't try -- there are more than enough pointless, random, gratuitous shots of topless beach babes to turn on any pimply-faced geek in search of female flesh and to give the movie reason to tout its salacious "Uncut, Unrated" label. Perhaps that is the point of the movie, and perhaps the distributors will make a few bucks off of that cheap ploy. More power to them, because any self-respecting individual who walks into a video store, looks at this title, and decides to rent it deserves to lose their four bucks.

Obviously, this is a sequel to the 2005 Paul Walker-Jessica Alba beach-bums-become-heroes movie. That film was one of the dumbest movies ever made, but it was released theatrically and featured actors of at least mediocre ability. Into the Blue 2 is a direct-to-DVD attempt to cash in on what the studio must think of as the "high-caliber Into the Blue brand," even though the original grossed a sparkling $18 million. This one stars Park Avenue mannequins who pose their way through a non-existent terrorist plot involving a nuclear warhead(!) and buried treasure.

Raise Your Voice Review

Unbearable
Bubblegum princess Hilary Duff's fleeting film career has reached the unpleasant stage where the wad of chew we're being offered has grown rubbery and flavorless. Our jaws ache just thinking about gnawing on a lump of sugar this size. What once was cotton-candy sweet now resembles the sticky paste that clings to the cardboard cone. Common sense tells you this junk is unappetizing. Why put your belly through such torture?

Raise Your Voice takes a feeble stab at building a feature film around a preconceived pop soundtrack of Duff tunes. It aims for Fame and ends up with famine. Following graduation from Riverdale High - seriously, were Archie and Jughead her classmates? - squeaky-clean Terri Fletcher (Duff) enrolls in the summer program at an elite performing arts academy. Competition is fierce, and so are the backstage stereotypes. Upon arrival, Terri falls for a British songwriter (Oliver James), befriends the hyperactive geek (Johnny K. Lewis), coaxes the talented recluse (Kat Dennings) out of her shell, and locks horns with the resident snob (Lauren C Mayhew). Who has time to sing when the student body is filled with such cardboard caricatures of standoffish overachievers?

The Trial of Old Drum Review

OK
Did you know the Animal Planet network makes movies? You better believe it!

This coming-of-age story follows just what we'd expect: a boy and his dog in 1950s middle America (and a true story, at that). Old Drum is the dog, and Bobby Edner is the kid (a kid who looks like that kid in all these movies). And of course, the dog's amazing: He even pulls him out of a lake after his raft falls apart and conks him unconscious. And when a pack of wild dogs attack, Drum single-handedly kills them all, taking serious wounds in the process. (He recovers, of course, to become the town hero -- those wild dogs are killing the local sheep!)
