David Bowie landed a spot on the cover of Britain's NME this week (begs25Feb13) by emailing a bizarre photo of himself to the magazine's editors and asking them to publish it.

The rocker's distinctive eyes are visible from behind a silver mask on the cover of the latest issue of Nme, and editor-in-chief Mike Williams reveals Bowie shot the photo exclusively for the publication.

Williams explains, "The shot, taken by his friend Jimmy King exclusively for Nme on February 11 in New York, landed in my inbox... with a message from Bowie's people: 'This is just for you. No one else has seen this. David would like it to be on the cover.'

"The word from New York is that the image is open to interpretation, just like the album. Which let's face it, is totally David Bowie."

Another new shot of Bowie, unmasked and staring into the camera, is featured alongside an article about the making of the Ziggy Stardust hitmaker's upcoming album The Next Day.
