British soccer superstar David Beckham has been appointed a UNITED NATIONS (UN) ambassador.
The ENGLAND captain's first mission will be to go to Africa in the new year (05) to encourage impoverished children to take up sport.
A "thrilled and honoured" Beckham, who has two children and is expecting a third with his pregnant ex-SPICE GIRL wife VICTORIA, was personally selected by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
A United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) insider says, "We're very excited to have David involved. He's such a brilliant role model and will go all round the world teaching boys and girls about football (soccer).
"He's worked with UNICEF before when he was with Manchester United."12/11/2004 02:53
