British TV naturalist David Attenborough received the prestigious Order of Merit award from Queen Elizabeth II on Friday (10JUN05).

The conservationist, who was knighted 20 years ago (85), admitted at the Buckingham Palace ceremony in London that he couldn't believe he had snagged the high honour.

The 79-year-old said, "How could anyone believe they actually deserved something like this?"

The honour is bestowed on people who have shown exceptional merit in the arts, literature and science.
