Rock megastar Dave Grohl has involved himself in a council dispute in Cornwall after he leapt to the defence of a teenage heavy metal band, who have been banned from practising their music in a family garage after noise complaints from neighbours.

The Black Leaves of Envy, a four-piece band from Praa Sands consisting of Cerys Plenty, 17, Dylan Plenty, 15, Adam Jones, 17 and Lewis Cunningham, 15, reached out to the Foo Fighters frontman after a series of complaints were made about the noise levels emanating from their rehearsal space in a suburban residential area.

Foo Fighters Address Break-Up Rumours With Spoof Video

Foo Fighters Dave Grohl

Foo Fighters have finally addressed those persistent break-up rumours with a tongue-in-cheek ‘official announcement’ video. And no, it’s not true, the band is still together!

In a seven-minute clip posted via the group’s official YouTube page late on Wednesday (March 2nd), the band has compiled the recent events that have led to speculation of a split and made them into spinning newspaper headlines – including frontman Dave Grohl’s recent solo performance at the Oscars.

It also features Grohl and producer Butch Vig in a deliberately jokey skit, speaking about doing “my own thing”, with Grohl singing about “free to be me” and playing a keyboard, making some pretty alarming EDM sounds, just to troll their fans.

Nirvana - In Utero: 20th Anniversary Edition Album Review

In a recent NPR interview, Dave Grohl described the different methods used to record 'Nevermind' and 'In Utero'. Butch Vig had laboured over multiple takes for the former to produce an album that would define a generation. On the latter, Steve Albini had encouraged Cobain, Grohl and Novoselic to record songs in one take if possible, and to avoid overdubs. The result was a more abrasive set of recordings and a more accurate reflection of Nirvana's power on stage. The 20th anniversary edition of 'In Utero' attempts to restore that vision, by providing an alternative view of what turned out to be Cobain's final studio statement. While not quite as exhaustive as the anniversary edition of 'Nevermind', in many ways 'In Utero' gains more from this treatment than its predecessor did.

Nirvana - In Utero Album Review

Recorded in two weeks at Pachyderm Studios in Minnesota during February of 1993, 'In Utero' was a reaction to the overwhelming popularity of 'Nevermind'. Producer Steve Albini set the band a simple challenge: "bang a record out in a couple of days, with high quality, but 'minimal' production and no interference from the front office bulletheads." Indeed, Albini's full letter to the band can be found in the liner notes for this re-issue; as a blueprint for the record, it makes fascinating reading. The anticipation of record company pressure and an unspoken obligation to Nirvana's burgeoning audience led to some changes from that original vision, though. Scott Litt who'd been working with R.E.M. was called in to overhaul the likes of 'Pennyroyal Tea', 'Heart Shaped Box' and 'All Apologies'. The album that eventually emerged was therefore 90% of the Albini mixes with additions like double tracked vocals thrown in for good measure. For the first time, then, this anniversary edition presents all the options that were considered, allowing the full set of Albini tracks to see the light of day.

They are admittedly more visceral and arresting, but that's not why this edition of 'In Utero' is indispensable to anyone that's ever engaged with the record. Albini, Grohl and Novoselic have re-entered the studio and remixed the album from scratch using the original tape sources. It may sound like overkill, but it really makes a difference. The 2013 version of 'In Utero' utilises unheard guitar tracks ('Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle' springs to mind), alternate vocal takes and eliminates some of the studio polish that cluttered up the original mix. 'Dumb', for example, sounds even more stripped back and heartfelt, and while there's still cello to be found, it's far less obtrusive. While it obviously doesn't have the input of Cobain, for all intents and purposes, this is the definitive mix of 'In Utero'. It's in no way superfluous and doesn't cause you to play a never-ending game of spot the difference. Instead, it presents a record that sounds substantially different, and all the better for it.

"I don't get to play with Chevy Metal all the time," Grohl declared while strumming an extended intro to the song. "It's the one band in the world I wish I could be in, but the f**king drummer's the boss.”

Dave Grohl Introduces Rush To 'Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame'

Rush Dave Grohl Randy Newman Public Enemy

Rush were the undoubted highlight of last night’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction at the Nokia theatre. Having been waiting for this moment since 1998, the band was finally invited in to the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by way of people power. For the first time, USA Today reports, fans were invited to cast their vote on who should be inducted and Rush won, hands down.

The band was introduced by an incredibly enthusiastic Dave Grohl – frontman of Foo Fighters and former drummer for Nirvana. “From day one, the band built its following the right way,” said Grohl. “No hype, no (baloney), they did it from the ground up without any help from the mainstream press…Their influence is undeniable and their devoted fan base is only rivaled by the Grateful Dead. Look at you people, all of you people, right here! And their legacy is that of a band that stayed true to themselves no matter how uncool they may have seemed to anyone.” The band’s singer and bass player Geddy Lee thanked their fans for getting them into the Hal of Fame, saying “the most passionate, incredible fan base around the globe …for not only supporting and encouraging our musical progress over the years, but for the insistence of their voices, which has most certainly led us to this evening."

Other highlights from the evening include a performance of I Love LA from Randy Newman and a riotous medley of Bring The Noise, 911 Is A Joke and Fight the Power.

Lee Ryan Denies 'Ruining' Dave Grohl's Sound City Players London After-Party

Lee Ryan Dave Grohl

It was one of the oddest stories of recent weeks, Dave Grohl getting irate at Blue’s Lee Ryan for turning up at his Sound City Players after party in London the other week hammered and ruining the occasion. However, if you believe the has-been boyband member the whole thing was entirely fabricated – and Grohl himself has been in touch personally to assure him that he was misinterpreted. This is the guy who’s a firm believer that he’s seen UFOs before, by the way.

"He messaged me... and he's like, 'No, I never said that'," Ryan claimed at the Chortle Awards, referencing Grohl’s comments that he almost had to get the performer thrown out of the bash in February. "He messaged me through our PA and said, 'Tell Lee I'm sorry about that, I don't know where that came from, but Lee's a really cool guy, I really love him'.

Continuing, Ryan painted his own version of the story. "Me and him were doing shots with each other at the bar, it was wicked” he claimed. “For me he's such a rock legend... I didn't ruin his party, I was just pissed like the rest of them. I think what he said was, 'Lee was wrecked out of his head', and I was." Given that in Grohl’s reported quotes the one-time Nirvana drummer didn’t even seem sure as to who Lee Ryan was (shocking, we know) we’re not sure whether to believe this. Still, it’s great publicity for the Blue man, so he seems to think. "I was really happy with it, if I'm honest. I've been kicked out of a few parties, but it's fun when you get kicked out. Being told to leave is great. 'Get out you're too pissed', 'Wicked'." Keep on trucking Lee.

Mis-matched Beef! Dave Grohl Vs. Blue's Lee Ryan

Dave Grohl Lee Ryan

Of all the people who you’d think would be able to get under the skin of Rock’s official nice guy Dave Grohl, you’d have Blue singer Lee Ryan pretty far down the list. In fact, you’d have Blue singer Lee Ryan pretty far down the list of people who’d even be within 100 feet of the former Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters front man. However, after Grohl brought his Sound City Players to London last month, to play a show at the O2 Arena, it was Ryan who somehow managed to crash the after party and turn the usually smiling rocker’s night sour.

Apparently Ryan turned up to the after party steaming drunk and proceeded to make nuisance of himself. “There was this English singer who was with us who was completely wasted” Grohl revealed to The Sun newspaper, “We almost had to throw him out” he added, before asking the interview, “Have you heard of this band, Blue?” As the penny dropped, Grohl continued “The guy kept telling us how many million records he’s sold. I was like, ‘Really? You?’” Don’t worry, Dave, it’s something we’ve all wondered.

That said, he does make good copy on Twitter. Ryan hasn’t reacted to the story, but his latest tweet did offer some profundities, as he wrote “I look but there's no chance.. I peer into the light hoping to find somewhere to lay my head in the dark. You won't see me.. You never did x”

The Landmark Performance That Never Was: How PJ Harvey Nearly Fronted Nirvana

PJ Harvey Nirvana Dave Grohl Foo Fighters

PJ Harvey very nearly collaborated with the remaining members of Nirvana, for a special one-off performance of the band’s song ‘Milk It,’ earlier this year. In an interview with NME, Dave Grohl, now the frontman of Foo Fighters, revealed that he asked the British songwriter to perform with him and Krist Novoselic because she was of Kurt Cobain’s favourite songwriters. Kurt was the singer and guitarist of Nirvana until he took his own life in 1994.

The performance in question would have taken place on February 19, Grohl revealed. He was planning for a concert with the Sound City Players and realised that Stevie Nicks and John Fogerty weren’t going to be able to make it, so started to think about alternative additions to the evening’s performance. “Someone came up with the idea of doing a Nirvana song with PJ Harvey. Kurt loved her and we love her and we thought, 'Yeah, what would we do?' I said: 'God, what if we were to do 'Milk It' from 'In Utero' with Polly singing?' We all looked at each other like, 'Woah, that would be amazing…' and then she couldn't do it!"

It’s been 19 years since Kurt’s death and the remaining members of Nirvana have never performed any of the band’s songs in public, since. “It's sacred ground,” said Grohl. If we were ever to do something like that it would have to be right because you want to pay tribute. There's a reason Foo Fighters don't do Nirvana songs, and it's a good reason." If the PJ Harvey collaboration had come off, it would have been a momentous occasion for fans of the band.

Want To See Prince Perform With 21-Piece Band At SXSW?

Prince Dave Grohl Justin Timberlake Green Day Depeche Mode South by Southwest

250 lucky competition winners will get the chance to see Prince perform with a 21-piece band at the SXSW closing party this week. The legendary singer has been confirmed as a performer for one of the Texas' festival's closing shows, before an intimate crowd of contest winners, reports The Guardian.

Electronics giant Samsung will fund Prince's SXSW debut show, in the same way it bankrolled Kanye West's gig at a launch event in 2012. To be eligible for a ticket for the concert on Saturday (March 16, 2013), fans must be either SXSW badge-holders or owners of a Samsung Galaxy phone. The room at La Zona Rosa will be strictly limited to just 250 people, where Prince will perform a career-spanning set with his band. "Prince is a legend and true creative and musical genius who has been pushing the boundaries of music for more than 35 years," Todd Pendleton, Samsung's chief marketing officer, told Mashable. "Having Prince in Austin at his first SXSW show will truly be a one-night-only experience that our Samsung Galaxy owners and friends will remember for years to come."

It's certainly SXSW's biggest draw of the week, though the festival in Austin, Texas, is also scheduled to include performances from the likes of Green Day, Depeche Mode, Justin Timberlake and Dave Grohl's all-star group the Sound City Players.

Albums of Note... Dave Grohl managed to rally a group of rock’s big players together to record an album designed to accompany his Sound City documentary – about the legendary LA recording studio of the same name. Amongst the stars making an appearance on Sound City: Real to Reel are Sir Paul McCartney, Josh Homme and Stevie Nicks; the latter of whom provides one of the album’s highlights:

“[The] tracks that do command attention… are worth wading through the mire for. One can only assume, for instance, that Lindsay Buckingham and the rest of Fleetwood Mac will be kicking themselves upon hearing 'You Can't Fix This,' because this is simply the greatest Fleetwood Mac song that never was.”

Sound City - Real To Reel Album Review

Sound City - Real to Reel Album Review

As Dave Grohl touts his Sound City documentary about the legendary Los Angeles recording studio, his Sound City Players have also been performing songs from the movie's soundtrack, released here under the title Sound City: Real to Reel. Grohl features heavily on the tracks but also draws on the talent of a number of Sound City punters from over the years; most notably Fleetwood Mac's Steve Nicks, Paul McCartney, Josh Homme and his former Nirvana band mates, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear.

Hopes are never high for a project such as this. A range of musicians with relatively diverse musical palettes (though there's a lot of common ground in some instances), combining forces for a singular goal: to provide a rock soundtrack for a rock-related documentary. There's always a fear that the end game will obscure or dampen the creative process; that the players in question won't have the time or creative freedom to explore the possibilities that they may otherwise have done. These fears are allayed to a small extent; there are some stand-out tunes on Real to Reel and, as a soundtrack to rock history, they will make for an excellent accompaniment to Grohl's moving images.

As a stand-alone listening experience though, the ever-revolving cast of players limits any sense of identity that the album could have forged. What results is a long-player of rock standards, with few tunes poking their heads above the parapet of drive-time sludge. Those tracks that do command attention, however, are worth wading through the mire for. One can only assume, for instance, that Lindsay Buckingham and the rest of Fleetwood Mac will be kicking themselves upon hearing 'You Can't Fix This,' because this is simply the greatest Fleetwood Mac song that never was. The Sound City Players have managed to recreate that perfect 'Rumours' era sound. With hints of 'Gold Dust Woman,' Nicks opens the track with the lines "they don't talk much about it / it goes back so many years / all the times we almost didn't make it / we stand clear / dancing with the devil / call it respect, call it fear / but we never allowed the devil to come to the party."

Given the demons that we all know Nicks and co. have faced in their time (very public relationship breakdowns, rumours of drug abuse and inter-band bitterness), it's a bold move for sure and one that pays off. If only the same could be said for the rest of Real to Reel. 'Time Slowing Down', featuring one of modern rock's most prolific contributors, Chris Goss, is another highlight; a breezy, melodic number with serious weight behind it. Equally, 'The Man That Never Was' (basically Foo Fighters featuring Rick Springfield) winds up, perhaps unsurprisingly, sounding like Foo Fighters at their heavy best; at their least quirky, at their most bolshy.

Straight-up rock is the order of the day here and that's what's delivered. For the most part, though, the tracks fade into insignificance. Even the presence of Joshua Homme does not save 'Centipede' from being anything other than just another slow-burning radio friendly rock song. As an accompaniment to the Sound City documentary, Grohl should be high-fived for going to the efforts that he has to create something unique and, indeed, for touring the album's material, giving fans the chance to catch some of their rock idols on one stage that they would undoubtedly never catch the opportunity to otherwise. As a commercial release, Real to Reel is a collection of average compositions, propped up by a few exceptional tracks.

Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds Push The Sky Away

Albums of Note... Heaped with praise and riding high in the UK charts, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ 15th studio album, Push the Sky Away is not only an artistic triumph but a commercial one, too. Cave’s songwriting style has mutated significantly since his early days as frontman and resident wildcard of The Birthday Party; he now resembles a particularly well-dressed bar fly and his songs are peppered with his quintessentially erudite turn of phrase.

For our reviewer, Push the Sky Away demonstrates Cave and his cohorts at their finest:“Knowing when to stop and what to leave out, when adding more will lessen the quality and having the strength of character to just cut away the surplus is most definitely driven by the ever uncompromising Cave and here it has clearly paid dividends… Push The Sky Away' has a delicacy and tenderness woven through it like a fine silken tapestry of beguiling beauty but it can still be unflinching and brutal.”

Albums Of Note... Get Up! pairs modern blues idol and expert slide guitarist Ben Harper with harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite. Aiming for blues authenticity, that’s exactly what Ben and Charlie achieve here. The pair of talented blues musicians fly in the face of modernity and instead strive to recreate the dusky glamour of a Chicago blues club.

In general, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite have delivered a strong, yet candid and fun blues album. This album really does not care that it is 2013, and why should it? Each of the ten songs contains something of merit. Both musicians involved are fairly prolific but this collection will doubtlessly shoot to the high end of the fans favourites in no time at all.”

Dave Grohl's Sound City Might Turn Into An Unexpected Success

Dave Grohl Nirvana

Dave Grohl, he of Nirvana and Foo Fighters fame, has made a film. It centers around a recording studio and a particular piece of equipment from the 70s, according to the Associated Press, and despite the sound of that premise, Sound City is actually, apparently, a solid film about the human element in making music. The flick premiered at the Sundance Film Festival – that means it’s got to be good, right? - and centers around the Sound City recording studio in Van Nuys, California, where Grohl recorded the legendary Nevermind with Nirvana in 1991.

The band were sent to the nondescript studio by their record company, which wanted the musicians close by, so that they could be kept an eye on. Apparently, the band were unimpressed by the small studio in a slummy neighborhood, before noticing all the gold records lining the walls by bands and artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Van Halen, REO Speedwagon, Guns 'n Roses, Neil Young, Cheap Trick, Slayer, Rick Springfield and more. From then on, the band fell in love with the studio’s crisp, clear sound of the place.

"You might have never heard of Nirvana if we had recorded in Hollywood with a fancy producer who made us sound like Def Leppard," he said. "The fact that that (sound) board made us sound like us is what people appreciated. To be reunited with it, honestly, it was like meeting your real parents for the first time." And now, two decades later, Grohl has finally managed to pay homage to that studio. Sound City hits theatres this Friday.

Dave Grohl's 'Sound City' Brings Light To A Usually Backlit Piece Of Recording History

Dave Grohl James Brown Sir Paul McCartney Mick Fleetwood

Dave Grohl has entered middle age, and as such it is time for the Foo Fighters frontman to branch out away from music as is the norm for the rock elite. With Sound City, Grohl has don't exactly this with his insightful look into one of Los Angeles' hidden relics, Sound City Recording Studio.

Attached as director, it is hard to think that anyone would be too enthused about going to see the film were anyone other than Dave Grohl signed up for the documentary, but this is far more than just a vehicle for Grohl to further demonstrate how cool he is. Lovingly referred to as a "sh*thole" throughout, the documentary is like an encyclopaedia of the indie world, with some big names such as Paul McCartney, James Brown and Mick Fleetwood appear alongside such underground heroes as Frank Black, Rivers Cuomo and Trent Reznor.

Grohl has recently been doing the rounds promoting the film and in a recent interview for 'The Nerdist' podcast, the former Nirvana drummer also opened up on the traumatic split of the trio. He tells the podcast, "It was heartbreaking. We were fucked up by what happened. So it was just, 'I gotta keep playing music, I gotta keep playing music.'"

Hurrican Sandy Benefit Concert Pleases Everyone...Except Courtney Love

Courtney Love Sir Paul McCartney Dave Grohl

Though The Hurricane Sandy Benefit concert raised money for those affected by the super storm that ripped into east coast America as well as aiding the relief effort, the feeling of good will surrounding the momentous event wasn’t shared by everybody. No, you might’ve guessed it, Courtney Love wasn’t impressed by the ‘Nirvana reunion’.

It wasn’t really a reunion as such; sure, the surviving members of the seminal grunge members were all on stage together (that’s Dave Grohl, Kris Novoselic and Pat Smear), but they were joined by ageing Beatle Sir Paul McCartney and didn’t even play a Nirvana song, opting instead for a Grohl/McCartney-written track ‘Cut Me Some Slack’. And it sounded alright. No, really it did. However, what with Love’s bitterness at Grohl and her gradual loss of control over much of the Nirvana rights, she was never going to be the easiest to please – and true to form she wasn’t.

Love spent the time leading up to the show making jibes on Facebook, at one point writing “Paul better get earmuffs for the bassplaying is all. [It's] not exactly known for its brilliance." And when the performance itself came she commented briefly, "There it was. Uh it was bad." However, Love’s grumpiness aside, people were trumping the concert as a success, with a line-up including The Who, Roger Waters and Eric Clapton being hailed as “one of the greatest line-ups ever” by the Daily Mirror. Other stars performing included Mick Jagger, Chris Martin and REM’s Michael Stipe.

Courtney Love Is Against Paul McCartney Fronting Nirvana In Place Of Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain Courtney Love Sir Paul McCartney Dave Grohl Nirvana

Courtney Love, Kurt Kobain's widow and mother of his only child, has expressed her distaste at the appointment of Paul McCartney to be the front man of a Nirvana reunion at the 12-12-12 charity gig in New York, on Wednesday.

The show was all for charity, to support the victims of Hurricane Sandy, for Courtney Love, it's just not cool that McCartney has taken Kurt's place, reports TMZ. "Look, if John were alive it would be cool." She said. She also objects to the reference to the gig as a 'Nirvana reunion' because she says, without Kurt, it's not Nirvana. We can certainly see where she's coming from, but for a band as well loved as Nirvana, a 'reunion' regardless of its authenticity never stops being a tribute to Kurt and will always provide an arena for fans to remember him and the band.

McCartney, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have been 'jamming' together for a while in secret and have even written some songs together. Speaking to the audience at the 12-12-12 concert McCartney said: "Recently, some guys asked me to go jam with them... So I showed up, like you do, ready to jam. And in the middle of it, these guys kept going, 'We haven't played together for years.' So the penny finally dropped, I finally understood I was in the middle of a Nirvana reunion." Reports the LA Times.

Sandy Benefit Concert Highlights: Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney And Nirvana Hit The Mark

Sir Paul McCartney Alicia Keys Kanye West Nirvana Dave Grohl Kurt Cobain Bruce Springsteen Rolling Stones

Yesterday’s Concert For Sandy Relief (December 12, 2012) turned into a year’s worth of rock and pop headlines, all rolled into one. Not only were some of the coolest kids on the block performing (Alicia Keys, we’re looking at you), but they were doing it in tabloid-seeking style (Kanye West in a skirt, anyone?). However, it was the older statesmen of rock and roll that really grabbed the nations’ attention last night.

First up, Sir Paul McCartney, formerly of The Beatles and now, apparently… of Nirvana? Well, maybe not quite. But Sir Paul did perform with the surviving members of Nirvana – Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, playing a new song that they had composed together, entitled ‘Cut Me Some Slack.’ It was part of a wider set performed by McCartney and allayed the fears of devout Nirvana fans, concerned that they would be performing a set of Nirvana covers, with McCartney taking the place of the late Kurt Cobain.

The Rolling Stones made an impressive, if brief, performance, playing ‘You Got Me Rocking’ and ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ before leaving the Madison Square Garden gathered crowd wanting more. Mick Jagger’s seemingly unending reserves of energy put many of the other performers to shame, even if he didn’t have to exert quite the same degree of stamina that he has had to at the band’s recent 2 hour 50th anniversary shows. “Homestate hero” Bruce Springsteen was described by New York Times as “the master of the socially conscious message that’s also a full-tilt rock concert” and last night, he didn’t disappoint. The evening ended on a rousing note, with Alicia Keys joined by a stage full of firefighters to sing ‘Empire State Of Mind Part II,’ with its appropriate chorus of “This is New York… concrete jungle where dreams are made of.”

Foo Fighters Hiatus Confirmed By Dave Grohl

Foo Fighters Dave Grohl Nirvana Them Crooked Vultures Queens Of The Stone Age

After hinting that the Foo Fighters will be going on hiatus at last weekend's Global Citizen Festival in New York, Dave Grohl has confirmed this on the band's Facebook page in a warm letter to fans.

At Saturday's concert Dave Grohl said that he wanted to make the most of their performance as he was unsure when they would be performing together again. In his letter on Facebook he said “Yes... I was serious. I'm not sure when the Foo Fighters are going to play again”. But, do not despair! He followed this up by saying “I never want to NOT be in this band. So, sometimes it's good to just... put it back in the garage for a while...” He also referred to the band as his 'family', his 'life' and his 'world'.

Grohl also encouraged fans that they would all see more of his work very soon, as the hiatus allows him to work on his latest project, a documentary called 'Sound City' which he referred to as the “most important project [he's] ever worked on.”

Foo Fighters And Neil Young Perform Together At A Concert In New York City's Central Park

Foo Fighters Neil Young Band Of Horses Black Keys Selena Gomez Olivia Wilde Dave Grohl

Mid-set, alongside Crazy Horse, Neil Young announced that “We’re joining forces up here,” just as Foo Fighter's Dave Grohl and Dan Auerbach graced the stage to collaborate with Young on an adrenaline and feedback fuelled rendition of "Rockin’ in the Free World."

Neil Young, Dave Grohl and the rest of the Foo Fighters joined Band Of Horses and The Black Keys among others to perform on the Grand Lawn at Central Park in New York City. This was all in aid of the Global Citizen Festival which supports a plethora of charities including World Vision and World Food Program USA.

As well as bands and solo artists, the event held brief speeches between sets from outspoken celebrities such as Selena Gomez and Olivia Wilde of House and TRON:Legacy fame. Dave Grohl seemed to love every second of their performance, lamenting however, that it may be a while before they take to the stage again, saying “We don't have any shows after this. This is where we play as many songs as we can in a short period of time, because, honestly, I don't know when we're gonna do it again”, as reported by Rolling Stone.

Neil Young, The Foo Fighters And The Black Keys Join-Up For Central Park Gig

Neil Young Foo Fighters Black Keys Dave Grohl Band Of Horses K'naan Selena Gomez Katie Couric

Central Park in New York set the stage for a rock triple threat in the shape of Neil Young, The Foo Fighters and The Black Keys, all of whom banded together for a benefit mini-fest, Great Lawn Saturday night, in aid of putting an end to global poverty.

An audience of over 60,000 squeezed into the massive green space in the middle of the Big Apple on Saturday (29th September) night for a five-hour concert, all for free! Well, there was one catch, but it only involved attendees having to register at the website 'The Global Poverty Project,' which looks to find a way to bring an end to extreme financial inequality across the globe. And if inviting 60,000 lucky guests along to the event wasn't enough, the concert was also streamed live online via a number of differing websites.

As well as the big three, which also involved an impromptu stage invasion by Dave Grohl during Neil Young and Crazy Horse's set, the line-up for the day also featured Band Of Horses and 'Wavin' Flag' singer/rapper K'naan. The night didn't lose track of what it stood for though, with celebrities including Selena Gomez and Katie Couric going up on stage between performances to discuss the ongoing financial struggle that is felt the world over.

Nirvana Live At The Paramount Review

Essential
It's amazing in many ways that Nirvana's Paramount show has taken 20 years to receive the release it deserves. Portions of the show have found their way onto other DVD's (most notably Live! Tonight! Sold Out!) and CD's, but it's taken the anniversary edition of Nevermind to prompt the show to surface in its entirety. With other bands, a belated release two decades late, may feature material that on closer inspection really is scraping the barrel, that's certainly not the case here.

There's also a distinct possibility that Live At The Paramount could become the definitive live Nirvana release. Whereas for example the equally brilliant MTV Unplugged and Live At Reading have garnered much praise, some of their appeal comes from the sense of occasion (one night only stripped back acoustic and barnstorming festival set respectively). Although the Paramount show is a Halloween event it doesn't rely upon that, as it's selling point. Instead it's Cobain, Novoselic, and Grohl at the top of their game, firing on all cylinders with raw intensity keeping you glued to the screen.

Lemmy Review

Extraordinary
'Lemmy' is the biographical documentary film of one Ian Kilmister, legendary rock'n'roller and leader of Motorhead. Apparently 2 years in the making the film runs the whole gamut charting his early days in North Wales, hitchhiking to The Cavern to see The Beatles through to moving to London to roadie for Jimi Hendrix. From then he joined Hawkwind and later went on to form Motorhead and concludes with Lemmy in his current abode in Los Angeles where he now resides and has done for several years.

Despite making some of the most uncompromising music of the last 30 years, Motorhead for some strange reason, cross all boundaries. This is undoubtedly down to the enduring appeal of Lemmy - a man who's stuck to his guns and done things on his own terms to the point where he has just ended up being accepted.

Which gives credence to the fact that If you spend long enough doing something and which such conviction, people will eventually come round to your way of thinking. As a rock 'n' roll icon his influence has touched almost everyone who is anyone and the most surprising thing of all about this documentary is the sheer breadth of people who have fallen under his influence. The usual rock crowd is to be expected. Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana), Metallica etc but its appearances of others such as Jarvis Cocker, Peter Hook (Joy Division), Mick Jones (The Clash), Marky Ramone (The Ramones) and Billy Bob Thornton that most surprise.
