Recovering addict Dave Gahan is strict about who he hangs out with because he fears he will be easily tempted back to drugs.
The Depeche Mode rocker became hooked on heroin in his band's heyday in the 1980s and 90s and almost died from an overdose in 1996.
He managed to overcome his personal troubles and was honoured by the MusiCares foundation on Friday (06May11) for his work helping fellow former addicts.
But Gahan admits he has to vet all his friends to avoid slipping in his battle for sobriety.
He tells Reuters, "If you sit in a barber's shop long enough, you're gonna get a f**kin' haircut.
"I don't hang out with people that are getting high because I'm not that strong. It's fun to party and I had a lot of fun, and I kind of used up all my chips in that department."
