Now You See Me 2 Review

Good

While the original 2013 magical caper was a big hit, it's style-over-substance approach didn't exactly scream out for a follow-up. But here we are, with go-to sequel man Jon M. Chu at the helm (he also directed the second Step Up and G.I. Joe movies). Most of the high-octane cast is back for more trickery, but the plot is even murkier this time.

Since their last whiz-bang stunt, the Four Horsemen have been laying low. Their leader Dylan (Mark Ruffalo) continues to work in the FBI, helping Daniel, Merrit and Jack (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco) plot their next caper, now joined by quirky illusionist Lula (Lizzy Caplan). Their latest project is to expose corruption at a New York conglomerate, but the stunt is ambushed, and the quartet mysteriously finds themselves in Macau, coerced by a tech genius (Daniel Radcliffe) into staging an elaborate heist. Meanwhile, Dylan's cover is blown, so he teams up with veteran Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman) and heads to Macau himself, chased by his FBI boss (Sanaa Latham). And it all goes down in London.

The round-the-world plot gives the movie some very cool locations, and the plot races so quickly that most audiences won't notice that it makes virtually no logical sense at all. There are flashy distractions at every turn, from sleight of hand to vanishing acts to gross-out gags to enormous double-bluffs, and all of this is thoroughly entertaining even if the script itself feels strangely incomplete. Most sequences tend to end before they get to the point, while action scenes are choppy and incoherent. The only set-piece that works is the kinetic central heist, which hinges on a rapidly flung playing card. But even though it's uneven and clunky, the film remains entertaining simply because of the magical shenanigans and snarky dialogue.

Dave Franco Harrison Ford Star Wars

The role of the young Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars anthology film has got to be one of the most coveted parts in Hollywood for any young actor. But one name who’s gotten closer than most to the role, is 21 Jump Street star Dave Franco. Speaking to MTV, Franco revealed he’d auditioned for the part, but that doesn't mean the role is any closer to being cast.

Dave FrancoDave Franco has revealed all about his Han Solo audition.

Franco described the process as feeling like ‘most other auditions’, initially but ‘because of the nature of what it is, it just explodes everywhere.’ “Everyone’s coming up and being like, ’Dude, what’s going on?’ And I’m like, ’I don’t know! You know as much as me,'” he said.

After becoming the most famous magicians in the world with their last tricks and exposing the wrongdoings of Arthur Tressler, it was obvious that as many people as they helped, they'd always upset a powerful few. One of those is Arthur's son, Walter Tressler.

Walter is on a mission to cause The Four Horsemen as much damage as possible. In order to stop Walter, the four magicians must pull off a stunt far bigger than their first.

With Isla Fisher pregant and unable to commit to the film Lizzy Caplan (Masters Of Sex) has been brought in to play the role of Lula. Other than Isla, all the lead cast from the first film will appear in the new film and Daniel Radcliffe will play the role of Arthurs son, a tech magnate.

Despite his business acumen and ability to land important deals, one businessman named Dan Trunkman (Vince Vaughn) still managed to get a pay cut from his uncaring boss - who may be hot but she's still widely hated throughout the company. A year later, he's set up his very own business with only two employees: one man who's old enough to have retired a decade ago (Tom Wilkinson), and a boy who's barely out of college (if he ever managed to get that far) hilariously named Mike Pancake (Dave Franco). Even in spite of the unsual trio, they still manage to secure a lucrative deal with a top company and make way for a trip to Germany to shake on it. However, another company threatens to disrupt everything - Dan's former employers. In order to be noticed over his busty blonde former boss, he has to pull out all the stops. And we mean all of them.

22 Jump Street Review

Very Good

A consistently hilarious stream of in-jokes keeps the audience in fits of laughter even if there's virtually no plot to this follow-up to the 2012 hit 21 Jump Street. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum revive their amusing double-act to poke fun at sequels and franchises amid silly set-pieces and starry cameos. And it gives filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller their second terrific comedy of the year, after The Lego Movie.

Following their successful bust of a high school drug ring, undercover officers Schmidt and Jenko (Hill and Tatum) are assigned by their grumpy captain (Ice Cube) to infiltrate a university and track down who's dealing the new drug whyphy. But both get distracted by life on campus: Schmidt begins a romance with Maya (Amber Stevens), while Jenko finds his meathead soul-mate in football teammate Zook (Wyatt Russell). With their partnership in jeopardy, Schmidt and Jenko must refocus on a spring break trip to Mexico, where they discover an old nemesis (Peter Stormare) on the loose.

Using a non-stop series of gags about how follow-up movies are more expensive and less original, the filmmakers go about proving this hypothesis with amusingly overwrought sets and a chaotic, derivative narrative that has very little momentum. Meanwhile, they pack every moment of the film with witty humour that's played expertly by Hill and Tatum, who rekindle their chemistry with a steady barrage of gay double entendre that reveals the movie's true nature as a brom-com. On the other hand, neither the actors nor the filmmakers are willing to push things too far, so they settle for silly vulgarity instead of any black comedy or edgy humour.

Neighbors [Bad Neighbours] Review

Excellent

There's a blast of raucous energy to this lively comedy that sets it apart from the pack; aside from a willingness to get deeply rude and incorrect, the movie is actually very funny. It helps that it's packed with snappy characters and witty dialogue, and that the cast makes the gratuitously vulgar humour come to life in surprising ways.

It opens with happy couple Mac and Kelly (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne), whose idyllic life with their ridiculously cute baby is interrupted when a frat house moves in next door. They want to be cool about it, so introduce themselves and nicely ask the fraternity leaders Teddy and Pete (Zac Efron and Dave Franco) to keep it down. They even indulge in a bit of partying themselves. But the noise only gets louder, and when Mac and Kelly call the cops in a moment of desperation, they spark a war that escalates into a series of crazy practical jokes. This also gets the fraternity in trouble with their university administrator (Lisa Kudrow), which only fuels the battle.

Director Nicholas Stoller (The Five-Year Engagement) keeps things moving briskly, packing every scene with shamelessly coarse humour. For every joke that falls flat (like a breast-feeding set-piece), there are five more gags immediately following that generate gut-busting laughter. While the plot is little more than a series of elaborate pranks, there's an unstoppable momentum that builds to a riotous party climax. Even more important is the way the actors are allowed to twist their stereotypical characters to add some meaningful subtext.

What Would 'Twilight' Have Been Like With This Alternate Cast?

Kristen Stewart Robert Pattinson Jennifer Lawrence Dave Franco

Welcome to the latest instalment in our ‘Alternate Movie Cast’ series! Last time we invited you to think about what the Harry Potter films would have been like if other actors who had auditioned for the roles had won them instead of the cast that we’ve come to know and love. This time, we’re taking a look at actors and actresses who auditioned for roles in the movie adaptions of Stephanie Meyers’ Twilight series. Obviously the coveted roles of Edward and Bella went to Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart and, as we all know, the dramatic romance that ensued offscreen between R-Pattz and K-Stew was almost as intense as the one onscreen. We wouldn’t have had it any other way, but imagine if these other celebs had won out instead of the tumultuous indie pair.

j law twilight Jennifer Lawrence was upset she missed out on the role of Bella Swan

Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart are often compared to one another as both are young Hollywood actresses around the same age. However, did you know that J-Law is a huge Twilight fan and did in fact audition for the role of Bella Swan? Jen admitted “I love the ‘Twilight’ books. I’m not even ashamed to say it, they are like methamphetamine to me. So when I heard Kristen Stewart say, “I only read the first one”, I was like, “Oh man,” because she wasn’t a huge fan of the books”. We’re sure that Twi-hard Jennifer was pretty upset at the time, but she’s since gone on to star as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games as well as winning an Oscar for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook. We think she’s probably recovered from the blow of losing out on the role of Bella.

In a bid to get their new neighbours to keep the wild partying to a minimum, they attempt to welcome the seemingly friendly new arrivals. To no avail, however, as they end up having to call the police when one party gets out of control and find themselves subsequently being terrorised in all areas of their lives by the frat boys. Determined not to be victimised by a group of college kids, the Radner's respond with their own revenge tactics - but who will have the upper hand in the end?

Now You See Me Review

Good

The idea of magicians conducting a series of heists is a great one, but this under-developed film never quite seizes the opportunity. Even its terrific A-list cast can't make much of the lame plot. And director Leterrier is so enamoured with magic that he packs the film with whizzy digital trickery. Which completely misses the point.

At the centre are four illusionists: card trickster Daniel (Eisenberg), hypnotist Merrit (Harrelson), escapologist Henley (Fisher) and street magician Jack (Franco). They're summoned by a mysterious figure to team up for a series of elaborate performances funded by a wealthy benefactor (Caine). First up is a Las Vegas show that involves stealing millions of euros from a Paris bank and raining them down on the audience. This attracts the attention of FBI Agent Rhodes (Ruffalo) and Interpol's Dray (Laurent), who follow them to their next shows in New Orleans and New York. As does a notorious debunker (Freeman) determined to expose their secrets.

The film never quite gets the balance right, as we're not sure if we should root for these flashy young magicians or the people they're leading on a wild goose chase. But there's plenty of eye candy to keep us happy, as each whizzy stunt goes over-the-top to make us wonder what's really happening here. Everything this quartet does has an anarchist slant, stealing from the wealthy to help the needy, which adds a tinge of topicality. Although the gratuitous action scenes and ludicrous effects leave the film about as realistic as a Road Runner cartoon.

Michael Atlas is the leader of the most formidable magician group ever seen, The Four Horsemen, alongside Merritt Osbourne, Henley and Jack. Being able to pull off some of the most baffling illusions ever seen, they decide to use their talent to outwit the highest authorities of the country and give something back to their loyal audience. They announce, at one show, that they will rob a bank in Paris and subsequently shower their fans with cash while using their ability to expose the white collar crimes that have been going on in the underground financial world. While the FBI flounder around trying to work out how the trick is done, magic genius Thaddeus Bradley remains the only person who seems to have an idea on how it was worked though he is equally as reluctant as the perpetrators to reveal the secrets.

Warm Bodies Trailer

A young male zombie spends his days roaming the barren and devastated wasteland that is America with limited thoughts and actions, only able to remember that his name while he was human began with the letter 'R' and only yearning to eat the brains of the few remaining living humans just so he can connect and learn to feel alive again. It's a post-apocalyptic world where a huge proportion of the population have been infected by a plague turning them into forever wandering, blood thirsty, undead creatures; some still have a little human left inside them, while others (known as Boneys) are skeletal creatures devoted to eating anything and everything with a heartbeat. After 'R' and his dead associates are set upon by a gang of humans with guns, he finds himself feasting on the brain of a man and absorbing his memories and feelings. When he catches the eye of the man's girlfriend Julie, he is overcome with the bizarre feeling to protect her and takes her away to the abandoned airport to hide her. When the other zombies see them together, the emotions are set off throughout the lot of them and they and the survivors all find themselves banding together to fight the Boneys who still remain emotionless and highly dangerous.

Directed and written by Jonathan Levine ('50/50', 'The Wackness'), 'Warm Bodies' is about a zombie nation being cured by the powerful thing that is love. It is based on the novel of the same name by Isaac Marion and is set to hit cinemas in the run up to Valentine's Day on February 8th 2013.

Starring: Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Dave Franco, Analeigh Tipton, John Malkovich, Cory Hardrict & Rob Corddry.

Excellent
An especially sharp script makes this riotous adaptation of the serious-minded 1980s TV series thoroughly entertaining. And it manages to achieve a balance between the action and spoofery due to sure-handed direction and a cast that really dives into the mayhem.

Rivals in high school, popular pretty boy Jenko (Tatum) and smart-shy nerd Schmidt (Hill) become unlikely friends to get through police academy. But being cops isn't quite as exciting as they thought it would be until they're assigned to the Jump Street squad run by Captain Dickson (Cube). This group of baby-faced cops infiltrate high schools, posing as students. Jenko and Schmidt's assignment is to find the source of a new super-drug that recently caused the death of a student.

Good
This remake of Todd Holland's 1985 schlock horror is more about the comedy than the terror, camping up the characters and indulging in grotesque effects shots.

Besides some cheap scares, it never generates a moment of suspense, but it's still good fun.

In suburban Las Vegas, Charley (Yelchin) is a nerdy teen with an impossibly hot girlfriend (Poots) and a feisty single mum (Collette). But there's something suspicious about the new neighbour Jerry (Farrell), whom Charley's best friend Ed (Mintz-Plasse) insists is a vampire. And as events start to get increasingly bizarre, Charley begins to believe it himself. He asks TV vampire expert Peter Vincent (Tennant) for advice, but Peter is a jaded showman who doesn't really believe in the supernatural. Or does he?
