The Brothers (2001) Review

Good
Like many other African-American-targetted flicks like The Best Man and Waiting to Exhale, The Brothers is best when it's trying to be a comedy and comes off as fluffy if not sappy and lame when attempting to teach us more serious lessons about life and love. But this movie about the trials and tribulations of four attractive, successful "buppies" will definitely entertain, and it's sure to rake in the box office cash.

The four "brothers" are commitment-fearing Jackson (Morris Chestnut, who also starred in The Best Man), woman-hating playboy Brian (Bill Bellamy), not-so-happily married Derrick (D.L. Hughley) and reformed womanizer Terry (Shemar Moore). When Terry decides to get married, his boys start sizing up their own lives.

Menace II Society Review

Very Good
Life in the hood is pretty bleak, but if you're Caine or O-Dog, it doesn't get much worse than this. The Hughes brothers' widely hailed (and often imitated) ode to life in South Central L.A. is morose and overflowing with violence -- to the point where you'll get blown away just for making a comment about someone's mother. Our hero Caine wants to get away from it all -- but his efforts don't amount for much. In the end, Menace isn't much more than a tragedy about street life -- but it never really makes a point. If this world is so bad, why glamorize it so much? To be sure, it's in an influential and powerful story -- but it comes off as considerably more shallow than the reality it claims to portray.

To Sleep With Anger Review

Weak
Insanely overrated, Charles Burnett's slow and melancholy drama feels like a profile of the Deep South when it's really about a family of African-Americans in central L.A. The point of the film is beyond me, involving Danny Glover's visit to his extended family's home and the havoc his presence creates. Not a lot of sleeping, not a lot of anger. Unsatisfying, and ultimately an example of overwrought yet lazy filmmaking.
