LEONARDO DiCAPRIO and Daniel Day Lewis prepared for tense scenes together in Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York by fighting on set.

The actors became firm friends while making the movie - even though they stayed in character throughout the filming process and regularly exchanged blows.

DiCaprio explains, "We'd beat the c**p out of each other and then really, like, try to make these hits look real.

"We'd have tons of leather on, and straps, and make-up. Blood bursting, blood caked on our our face and then dirt getting in the blood, and then our eyes. Doing this all day."
