A Cure For Wellness Review

OK

It's no surprise that this creep-out horror thriller is packed with whizzy visual invention, since it's directed by Gore Verbinski, who made the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, as well as Rango and The Lone Ranger. And the screenplay by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road) starts well, stirring in some resonant themes amid the growing, gnawing nastiness. Unfortunately, over the film's overlong running time, it just gets sillier and simpler.

The story centres on Lockhart (Dane DeHaan), a rising star workaholic New York broker who's been caught in some dodgy dealings. To redeem himself, he is sent to collect the company's boss (Harry Groener) from a Swiss sanatorium, where he seems to have gone native. Or something. But when Lockhart arrives at the picturesque Alpine castle, things quickly begin to spiral out of control. He's injured in a car crash, forcing him to become a patient at the spa alongside the rather too-cheerful elderly residents, who are undergoing some sort of odd treatment. As Lockhart digs deeper, he runs afoul of the director, Dr Volmer (Jason Isaacs), especially when he befriends the doctor's star patient, the oddly naive Hannah (Mia Goth). And as things get freakier, Lockhart begins to worry that he'll never get out of here.

Verbinski develops a darkly gothic atmosphere from the first frames of the film, and things get increasingly offbeat from there. Some elements are blackly comical, but the overall tone is grotesque, with a special emphasis on slimy eels, which appear alarmingly everywhere Lockhart looks. Meanwhile, Haythe stirs in a convoluted mythology about the mad baron who lived in the castle 200 years earlier. When combined with underlying themes about the stresses of modern-day life and the relative morality of Wall Street bankers, this is all rather intriguing. Unfortunately, these clever textures slip away quickly, leaving little more than a series of repetitive set pieces designed to give the audience the jitters as they remind us of other movies.

Ahead of the release of his highly acclaimed new psychological horror movie A Cure For Wellness later this month, actor Dane DeHaan spoke about the “wild, crazy” experience of filming the project in a castle in southern Germany.

A Cure For Wellness, which got a great reception when it was unveiled at Austin back in December, sees DeHaan, an employee sent to rescue his boss from a mysterious wellness centre in the Swiss Alps, suffer from strange symptoms as he investigates the truth.

“Every day was really crazy and terrifying, and oftentimes tortuous!” he said about the physical demands of his role. “I undergo a lot of crazy spa treatments, I spend a lot time in a cast… it was a wild, crazy adventure, just like the film.”

A Cure For Wellness Trailer

Where does the line of wellness end and where does illness begin? That's the question on the mind of one young business official with big dreams. He is forced to visit a mysterious 'wellness center' in the middle of the Swiss Alps; a beautiful location where his boss has been staying for therapy. It seems like an incredible place to be treated, whatever your ailment, with its vast array of treatments, spas and therapies - many of which are unique and innovative. But all is not what it seems at this wellness center; there's a sinister melancholy in the air and soon our protagonist finds himself struggling with his own sanity, unable to leave but too frightened to stay. It becomes clear that there is an affliction affecting all the residents, the cure for which is an ominous mystery.

What Do We Know About 'The Sinister Six' Movie So Far?

Andrew Garfield Emma Stone Dane DeHaan

Spider-Man might be about to swing his way back onto our screens in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but our favourite hero might just need to watch his back as the Sinister Six are coming. Drew Goddard has just been confirmed as the director for the upcoming movie, which will expand the Spider-Man franchise by turning its attention to some of Spidey’s most notorious villains.

It was late last year that Sony announced its plans to create what it called a “bigger universe” around its most popular superhero, Spider-Man. Along with a third Spider-Man movie, Sony decided to branch out the franchise by creating two movies based around some of Peter Parker’s most famous foes, Venom and the Sinister Six. As Spider-Man producer Avid Arad put it, “Villains can be very entertaining. It’s not like somebody’s born and they’re a villain. Something happens and it changes their lives. Some people can deal with it — they become the heroes. Some people can’t and hate the world because of what they felt was done to them — they become the villains.” Thus the hope is that these two new villain centric movies will further strength the Spider-Man franchise, giving Peter Parker a world of developed characters to do battle with.

In Kill Your Darlings, Daniel Radcliffe takes a radical step from his days playing the world’s favourite wizard by portraying Allen Ginsberg in his early years at Columbia University. It is there he becomes infatuated with Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan) and strikes up friendships with beat legends, William Burroughs (Ben Foster) and Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston).

The film follows Ginsberg’s dramatic time at the university, from his early relationship with Carr to the murder investigation that would then shape the lives of all the promising artists. It’s a stylish entry from director John Krokidas; full of cigarette smoking, whisky swilling and late night plotting.

Kill Your Darlings Trailer

Allen Ginsberg is a Beat Generation writer, with no idea that his venture to New York to attend Columbia University will hold more than just a promising future career-wise. It's there that he meets Lucien Carr; a slightly unhinged but ambitious, intelligent and extremely good looking fellow student who enjoys wild partying with his wealthy friend  William Burroughs and, later, Jack Kerouac. As Allen and Lucien become closer, the latter's much older friend - a professor named David Kammerer - becomes increasingly jealous, threatening Allen who discovers that he has been following Lucien from city to city over a few years. Although Allen insists that they must find a way to prevent this incessant stalking, he is deeply shocked when David's body is discovered in the Hudson River, with Lucien held as prime suspect for stabbing him to death. Allen now faces a dilemma; to either use his skills in writing to make sure his friend is liberated, or reveal what he now believes is the truth to all.

Is Paul Giamatti Set For Dream Role In The Amazing Spider-Man 2?

Paul Giamatti Andrew Garfield Jamie Foxx Emma Stone Shailene Woodley Dane DeHaan

Somebody must have been reading when Paul Giamatti expressed a desire to appear in a Spider-Man film, back in 2011. It’s now been reported that the actor is in talks to join the cast for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the reboot which stars Andrew Garfield as the web-firing mutant hero.

Giamatti is apparently in talks to play the villainous Rhino, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The character first appeared in the 41st issue of the comic back in 1966; hailing from a Soviet Bloc country, he wore a suit that made him invulnerable whilst giving him super strength and speed; speaking back in 2011, Giamatti admitted that he loved the character. “I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid,” he commented. “It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit and I always thought, ‘Why don’t they have The Rhino in one of their movies,’ but maybe The Rhino wasn’t that big of a deal for anybody but me. If they ever go with The Rhino I would be ready and waiting.”

And it appears that Marvel Entertainment have listened; if he does sign up he’ll be joining an impressive looking cast, with Garfield and Emma Stone both returning. Jamie Foxx, Shailene Woodley and Dane DeHaan are also appearing. Marc Webb once again directs.

Cheap At Twice The Price, Daniel Radcliffe's Kill Your Darlings Acquired For Less Than $2m

Daniel Radcliffe Dane DeHaan Ben Foster

The Daniel Radcliffe movie Kill Your Darlings is sweeping the Sundance Film Festival acquiring mountains of fans in the process and plenty of good press. Despite its being its young director's feature directorial debut, John Krokidas' Kill Your Darlings has garnered an impressive cast, which makes it all the more surprising that Sony Classic Distribution (SPC) managed to nab it for a little shy of $2m, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Kill Your Darlings has its basis in the pre-roots of the beat generation. Allen Ginsberg (Radcliffe) gets caught up in a murder which results in a friendship forming between Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs. It is also something of a bildungsroman and a sexual awakening story as a Ginsberg is drawn in by his "impossibly cool and boyishly handsome classmate", Lucien Carr. Starring alongside  Radcliffe, are Dane DeHaan, Ben Foster, Michael C. Hall, Jack Huston, Elizabeth Olsen. So far, the script and the casting has been to the film's credit and it's received almost unanimously positive reviews thus far. SPC's investment was almost certainly well worth it.

Speaking about their acquisition, (SPC) praised Krockidas: "This is an amazing movie, a great American drama, thriller, and perfect evocation of New York in the 1940's as you have never seen on screen before,' they said in a statement. "With an ensemble cast that is truly mind-blowing led by Daniel Radcliffe in a profoundly moving performance as Allen Ginsberg, we are witnessing the birth of a major new American filmmaker."

Chronicle Review

Extraordinary
Taking the found-footage thriller to a new level, this film throws real-life teens into an extraordinary story while deepening the characters and providing exhilarating action. Even Cloverfield seems unimaginative by comparison.

Andrew (DeHaan) is a nerdy teen videotaping his life in an attempt to liven it up. His hip cousin Matt (Russell) thinks he's nuts, but goes along with it, inviting him to a student rave. There they team up with the coolest guy on campus, Steve (Jordan), to explore a strange hole in the ground. When they emerge, they have telekinetic powers that grow stronger the more they use them.

But they quickly discover the scope for danger, creating a few rules that Andrew privately bristles against.
