Camp Hell Review

Very Good
Even with some unnerving supernatural elements, the scariest thing about this low-key horror film is the earnest spirituality of the Christian community. The grounded approach and honest performances are provocative and unsettling. As is the fact that it's based on a true story.

Against his will, teenager Tommy (Denton) is sent to a Camp Hope by his deeply religious parents (Delany and McCarthy). More like a military bootcamp than a week of summer fun, the camp is run by a cult-like covenant community. The rules Father McAllister (Davison) enforces are painfully strict, although Tommy scores points because he's reading Dante. Fortunately, no one knows about his crush on Melissa (de Angelis). Meanwhile, after a violent demon-related incident, Daniel (Eisenberg) has been in a mental health facility for six months.

The Right Temptation Review

Weak
Wow, when did Rebecca De Mornay get old? The Right Temptation is hardly a fitting title for so untempting a movie, a ridiculously unbelievable thriller that puts De Mornay in the middle of a scam dreamed up by Dana Delany's troublesome wife to Kiefer Sutherland. From the moment requests "a woman" be put on her P.I. case, you know something's fishy.... The trouble is, the fish is rotten. Kudos to De Mornay's pet pig, though.

Louise Brooks: Looking For Lulu Review

Very Good
Think of Louise Brooks as the first Goth actress. A star of the silent era, she was mysterious and enigmatic, sporting an iconic, cropped black haircut in an era of long, frizzy tresses and flowing blonde waves. And that smirk, there was something about her that you couldn't quite peg, but you knew she wasn't an altogether happy girl.

This short but loving documentary about Brooks' life and career tells us the secret beneath the bob, a story of early molestation, rise to fame in the silents, self-exile to Germany, and a return to the U.S. screen as an "and also featuring" cast member. In addition to narration by a smitten Shirley MacLaine, it has footage of Brooks herself, shot near the end of her life when she'd gone clearly nuts, raving incessantly about masturbation. (Not kidding.)

Fly Away Home Review

OK
Anna Paquin's first starring role after stealing an Oscar for The Piano is the harmless family movie Fly Away Home. Following in the footsteps of countless family movies before it, Fly Away Home tries too hard to appeal to both children and their parents and ultimately loses much of its appeal to everybody.

In case you missed the movie's trailer, which provides a nice plot synopsis, Fly Away Home is about a teenage girl (Paquin) from New Zealand who moves in with her Canadian father (Jeff Daniels) after her mother dies. The young girl is utterly bored and lonely until she finds a family of young goose eggs (eventually geese) to take care of. After she becomes the geese's mother, she finds happiness, and the whole family bands together to figure out how to take care of the geese. This ultimately leads to the decision to have young Anna fly the geese down south for the winter.

Wide Awake Review

OK
Best known for dazzling us with The Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan hit the big screen most recently with this perplexing dud, also about a kid with semi-mystical powers. Wide Awake is not nearly so fascinating as Sense, as it follows the story of a kid who misses his dead grandpa so much he seeks answers about grandpa's well-being from all the religions in the world. Not nearly as interesting as it could have been, Wide Awake quickly provokes yawns and smirks over its cutesy treatment of death.

Light Sleeper Review

Very Good
Light Sleeper feels like a serious '80s film, though it was made all the way in 1992. It's a relic of the drug era, filled with a soulful performance from WIllem Dafoe (a conflicted upper-class dealer who wants to get out of the business), a synthesizer score, and virtually no scenes set during the day. Susan Sarandon and Dana Delany also look straight outta 1983, with a bouffant hairdo and a close-cut Jane Wiedlin cut, respectively. As for the film, it's more hit than miss, and Dafoe's earnest portrayal carries the movie through its rockier, less sensical parts. Worth a look.

Tombstone Review

Very Good
If Kurt Russell's handlebar mustache doesn't give you the willies, you need a bigger TV.

The definitive populist telling of the Wyatt Earp story, Tombstone has more fun with the story than traditionalist versions like Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp, with a younger, more crowd-pleasing cast -- Thomas Haden Church plays a bad guy; Jason Priestley is a deputy. And it's got more factual holes than the Clanton gang ended up with -- all in the name of serving up Good Clean Fun.

Sirens (1999) Review

OK
Promising TV thriller about police brutality/excessive force/wrongful death gets sidetracked early on. Not to be confused with Sirens. Sorry, Ms. Delany, but Exit to Eden ruined your career. Forever.
