Damon Wayans Jr. Set To Leave 'New Girl' After Season 4

Damon Wayans Jr.

Damon Wayans Jr. is fast becoming one of television's most desired comedic stars, and it seems receiving so many offers has proven just too tempting. The 32-year-old will depart from the cast of 'New Girl' once filming of the Fox Comedy's current forth season is complete in May.

Big Hero 6 Review

OK

Fans of bright, flashy things will love this colourful, kinetic animated adventure, although anyone seeking originality or involving characters should probably look elsewhere. This is the first Disney animation based on a Marvel comic book, although they have essentially only retained the title and a vague semi-Asian setting. The result is a film that feels like something you've already seen before, with the usual Disney plot formula, characters and action beats, plus lots of sentimentality. At least it's witty and fast-paced enough to keep us entertained.

The futuristic setting is San Fransokyo, a slightly more Japanese version of San Francisco in which 15-year-old computer-geek orphan Hiro (voiced by Ryan Potter) lives with his Aunt Cass (Maya Rudolph). Both are shaken when Hiro's brother Tadashi dies in an explosion Hiro thinks he might have caused. Then he meets Tadashi's health-care robot invention Baymax (Scott Adsit), a cuddly inflatable creature who just wants to take care of Hiro. He goes along with Hiro's plan to turn him into a fighting machine that helps find the masked man who stole Hiro's microbot invention and actually caused the explosion. Baymax also helps Hiro assemble the Big Hero 6 team, adding Tadashi's nerd-inventor pals: goofy Fred (T.J. Miller), rebellious Go Go (Jamie Chung), nice-guy Wasabi (Damon Wayans Jr.) and girly Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez). Together they set out to stop the villain before he enacts his nefarious plan.

All of this is animated with bright colours and a snappy sense of the technology. There are several exhilarating set-pieces along the way as the young heroes work out their special powers by inventing all sorts of gadgets. But nothing about the script meaningfully deepens these characters. Each person on-screen is essentially one personality trait, while potentially colourful side roles (including Aunt Cass) are left badly undefined. What holds the interest is the superb interaction between Hiro and Baymax, mainly because of the obvious affection between them. And also because Baymax has all of the film's funniest lines.

Zooey Deschanel Damon Wayans Jr. Max Greenfield

After appearing once in the pilot episode of Fox comedy New Girl, Damon Wayans Jr. was nowhere to be seen in the succeeding episodes and even seemed to have been replaced by Lamorne Morris' Winston Bishop. Two and a half years later and Damon made his triumphant return to the apartment to reunite with his old friends for six episodes.

The Other Guys Review

Excellent
A sharp script sets this fast and furious action comedy apart from other brainless summer movies. And it's played with such deadpan precision that it keeps us laughing from start to finish, even when things get bogged down by the plot.

New York cops Gamble and Hoitz (Ferrell and Wahlberg) have been relegated to unimportant positions by two teams of flashier detectives (Jackson/Johnson and Wayans/Riggle). But when Gamble arrests a millionaire investor (Coogan) for a minor infraction, he and Hoitz are plunged into a murky case involving a ruthless Aussie goon (Stevenson) and bribed city officials. Even their captain (Keaton) tells them to leave it alone, but Gamble can't let go and Hoitz sees this as a chance to stop being the "other guys".

Dance Flick Review

Unbearable
The recent spate of dance-based movies is ripe for parody, but this pastiche never manages to find an actual joke. We're left with a painfully convoluted non-plot trying to link together a series of lead-ins to never-realised punchlines.

Megan (Bush) is a perky teen who always wanted to be a ballerina but wound up in the inner-city Musical High School instead of Julliard. She's befriended by the sassy Charity (Atkins), whose brother Thomas (Wayans Jr) catches her eye and offers to teach her some new dance steps. But Thomas and his pal (Crockett) are in debt to a local gangster (Grier). To pay up they need to take on a rival team in The Streets dance-off, which happens to be on the same night as the school's Senior Showcase.

Dance Flick Review

Good
For crass inconsistency, you can't beat the Wayans family. Sure, they gave us TV's In Living Color, and back when big brother Keenan Ivory was behind the lens, there was I'm Gonna Get You Sucka and Scary Movies 1 and 2. Of course, since then, they up-chucked the horrific White Chicks, and the equally repugnant Little Man on unsuspecting audiences. Now they are back doing what (they think) they do best -- making fun of current cultural trends. In this case however, their parody of the Dance Flick film is, believe it or not, right on the money.

When her mother dies unexpectedly, Meghan White (Shoshana Bush) leaves the suburbs and heads for the big city. There she attends Musical High School and quickly befriends brash unwed mother Charity (Essence Atkins), the chubby Tracey Transfat (Chelsea Makela), and the standard good boy mixed up with a bad crowd, Thomas Uncless (Damon Wayans Jr.). At first, she could care less for her hip-hop loving classmates. But soon, she is turned around by the beat of the music and the attentions of Tom.
