Damon Albarn worried Gorillaz new image would look too "gay".

The musicians behind the cartoon band have started to reveal themselves during live performances, and have assumed a nautical theme for their latest 'Escape To Plastic Beach' tour. However, singer and group mainman Damon Albarn said he realised he was starting to take it a little too seriously when he started to worry if the stripes on their sailor's tops were too thick or thin.

He explained: "I actually woke up panicking in the middle of the night and thought, 'b***dy hell, what have I done?'"

Referencing a French designer famed for his used of camp nautical imagery, he added: "It might look a bit, well, gay. Not that there's anything wrong in that but I didn't want us being like something from a Jean-Paul Gaultier advert."

Damon said The Breakthrough for the group's look came when he saw a photo of a German submarine crew coming up for shore leave.

He added: "They had beards, their clothes were grubby. That was the key. As long as I could carry it off, then I knew The Others would follow me. I set the template then everyone arranges it to suit themselves. It's not like putting on a costume. When we tour, we wear the gear all the time."

The 'Escape To Plastic Beach' tour is touring North America in October and will come to Europe in November, before heading to Asia and Australia in December.
