Damon Albarn is busy reading up on magic - he's conjuring up a new opera project about 16th-century alchemist JOHN DEE.
The Blur rocker is joining forces with his Gorillaz collaborator Jamie Hewlett and Watchmen writer Alan Moore for the joint venture, which will tell the story of Dee's life and work.
Albarn admits he has not yet started composing the music - because he is spending all his time researching magic and philosophy in preparation.
He tells NYMag.com, "It's based on the life of John Dee, who was a very influential force in Elizabethan Europe, especially England. He was responsible for creating the concept of the British Empire. So he affects all our lives in one way or another. He was an alchemist. It's about his life.
"I've just been reading about Hermetic magic and catalysts and philosophy, which is what all of his stuff is based on. And it's been brilliant."
