Hope Springs Trailer

After 31 years of marriage, Kay is starting to feel disheartened by the lack of a spark between her and her husband Arnold. Desperate for romance and intimacy again, Kay searches out a well-known specialist in marriage counselling who she arranges to visit to enrol in one week of therapy sessions in order to rekindle their relationship. She drags a reluctant Arnold on a plane to the town of Great Hope Springs for the counselling that will prove either futile or life-changing; it certainly doesn't look like an easy task what with the couple being faced with their sexual reservations and, conversely, each other's illicit fantasies.

Everybody's Fine Review

Weak
Cloying sentimentality threatens to overwhelm this quiet character study about a widower trying to reconnect with his children. Despite the solid acting and wrenching drama, this over-slick film never connects emotionally.

Frank Goode (DeNiro) is rattling around his empty house after his wife dies.

His kids are all grown and out on their own, and none of them can be bothered to keep in touch. When they all cancel coming to a family dinner, Frank decides to pay them surprise visits, taking a road trip to see artist David (Lysy) in New York, ad exec Amy (Beckinsale) in Chicago, musician Robert (Rockwell) in Denver and dancer Rosie (Barrymore) in Las Vegas. But none of their lives are quite what he's been led to expect.

Olympia (1998) Review

Weak
Bizarre as it sounds, Olympia tells the wacky story of a Mexican soap opera star (Olympia) who heads north to try her hand as an Olympic javelin thrower. Her trainer, a former taco-costume character, falls in love. Nuttiness ensues. A low-budget film shot in Texas, Olympia has moments of hilarity but is saddled by a plot of little consequence. Olympia's journey is never entirely serious, saddled further by a slapstick scenario. Her trainer (Jason Andrews) ostensibly learns about life and love... but it never really comes across on the screen. So-so at best.

Amateur Review

OK
Hal Hartley's latest film, Amateur, is quite a departure from his earlier work. Still gone is his once-traditional lead, the crimson-haired ingenue Adrienne Shelly (who hasn't been seen since Trust), and in her stead are two foreign actresses, Isabelle Huppert (as a lapsed nun trying to make it as a porn story writer and who believes she is a nymphomaniac) and Elena Lowensohn (returning to Hartley's films as Sofia, a somewhat psycho porn star). Hartley's favorite male lead, Martin Donovan, remains as Thomas, the slimeball husband of Sofia.

The plot is this: Sofia is fed up with Thomas, so she tries to kill him. He doesn't die--he just cracks his head and develops amnesia. Isabelle finds him and takes him under her already fragile wing. Throw in an extortion plot wherein the old Thomas was trying to blackmail a nameless entity, and add the thugs trying to kill him. Eventually, everyone gets sucked into this scheme, and nothing works out for any of them.
