Teenage actress Dakota Fanning is overjoyed to have turned 18 this year (12) - because it means she can vote in the all-important U.S. election on Tuesday (06Nov12).

The I Am Sam star reached the milestone on 23 February (12), and she's exercising her right as an American to head to the polls as incumbent President Barack Obama takes on Republican rival Mitt Romney.

She tells Britain's InStyle magazine, "I can do my part to choose the President of the United States. I mean, even if that was the only responsibility that came with being 18, that's huge. That's why I was excited to be 18, personally, so I can choose, you know, what I believe in."

However, Fanning is not prepared to reveal who she is voting for, adding: "I try to stay out of politics in my public life, because I think it's something that causes conflict."
