Cyndi Lauper 'Devastated' By Prince's Death

Cyndi Lauper Prince

Police found the 57-year-old singer/songwriter unresponsive inside an elevator at his Paisley Park home just outside Minneapolis on Thursday (21Apr16), and paramedics were unable to revive him. The cause of death is still unknown, although it has been reported that the Purple Rain hit maker passed away following a possible drug overdose.

However Lauper, who befriended the iconic musician during their rises to superstardom in the 1980s, denied that Prince took any banned substances, and claimed that he may have been taking prescription medication.

"I'm pretty devastated," she told Billboard.com on Friday (22Apr16). "I loved the guy. You just didn't expect him to go like that. He doesn't do drugs; he was sick, so he might have been taking medication, but I don't know what the heck happened.

"I was shocked! I thought, 'Wow, that'd be awesome', but I had to call up my manager to check if it was real or not," she tells Star2.com.

Cyndi Lauper: Fame Stole My Style

Cyndi Lauper Madonna

The American singer sprang onto the music scene in the 1980s with hits such as Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and True Colours. It wasn't just her songs that gained attention though as her quirky style has played a big part in her rise to fame, with fans clamouring to recreate her offbeat looks.

"Before I was a pop star I used to have people throw rocks at me ’cause I was wearing vintage clothing that didn’t fit very well, and it was different," she told Britain's Big Issue magazine. "Someone threw a rock and I’d say, 'Oh really? Where did you get your clothes from? A rack alongside 10 others that were exactly the same?'

"But then when I became famous everyone started dressing like me. I didn’t expect that. I guess they just wanted to have fun. But I felt like I couldn’t be who I was any more because it had all gone. It was like a uniform, this thing I’d put on to empower myself. I’d picked out all those pieces."

Cyndi Lauper Emmylou Harris

The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun hitmaker has teamed up with Nashville greats like Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill and Willie Nelson to record a series of new tracks for Detour, an album she feels she has been destined to make for years.

Cyndi admits singer k.d. lang was the first friend who realised the pop star had a country vibe about her, and since she sang with her in 1990, many other people have suggested she head for Tennessee to record a roots record.
